Jason - Nice video. You have more nerve than me getting on Lake James during white caps. I live here with a Catalina 18 near canal bridge.

Nice, I would love to have a place up there. We just go out when we get a chance. Sometimes the conditions aren't ideal but we try to make the best of it. 🙂

I started sailing on Lake James in October of 2021. We had a mild December so I sailed on Christmas Day and Dec. 28. I started out on a Capri Cyclone, a 13-foot one-man boat similar to a Laser. Great to learn on. But you must have a wet suit or a dry suit when the water is cool, because Jason is right. The wind is constantly shifting and gusting on Lake James. When the wind comes out of the NW and down off the mountain it HOWLS. I go to Lake Rhodhiss on days like that, which means a lot of tacking, but the wind is not as extreme as it is on Lake James over on the Linville side where Jason puts in in this video. I was going to Rhodhiss during April of 22. I also have an old Chrysler Buccaneer 18. It's a two-man boat, but I sailed it a good bit on James in the autumn of 22. Like Jason says, you must keep one hand on the tiller and one on the main sheet at all times and be ready to point her tighter to the wind to dump some power -- or you will go over quickly. I also have a Thistle which is simply too much boat for one man to handle on that lake. Also, the mast is a real job for one man to set. The Buccaneer mast is doable for one man. I also have a 1985 I-14 racing dinghy with double trapeze that I am sorting out. Both of my sons are working out of state. Until one or both come back, I could use a partner on the Thistle and I-14 for sure, and the Buc will handle a lot of wind with two men, but 12-14 is max for one man, unless you want to run on a reduced rig.

Good stuff. Have had a couple of c22’s in the past then went bigger for awhile but missing the trailer sailer aspect and kind of looking to get back into one. The video thumbnail had me though with your van as we have a 7.3 e350 Sportsmobile with the Quigley conversion. 😆 So tip of the hat to you. Sail on

Great minds think alike. A van is great for trailer sailing especially if you're staying overnight or taking a dinghy with you.

Hey, great sailing! Greetings from inland Louisa County Virginia! I have the Catalina 25 and used to sail the Kerr Reservoir near Clarksville, Va. It's in my yard on a trailer awaiting the trip to its new home on the Chesapeake. You need to pull your 22 East into one of the sounds and do a trip to the Outer Banks! Good stuff and a great boat!

I sailed the Albemarle around the Outer Banks for years. There is a reason the Wright brothers went there to fly an airplane - plenty of wind!

Hey Chad, Glad you enjoy my vids Man 👍 I wish I knew where to get sails because mine are worn out. I ordered sails from that "Very Accurate" Canadian company that all the sailing channels get their sails from. It didn't work out . . . I eventually had to demand a refund. Then I looked into getting some from Catalina Direct where I had previously ordered my 75% jib from and it was going to be a 7 month wait. There are some companies that sell used sails that may be able to get you going.

Hi brother I want you to know I am still there. News is important Awareness too. Beautiful work your cat has a bit different keel than mine which is referred too as a shoal draft Catalina built so many different variations. I politely ask can you tell us a bit about your vessels keel?
@odysseyofjason2 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, they made 3 variations. The most prevalent being the Swing Keel. There was also the full Fin Keel but I've never actually seen one in the wild. My boat has the Wing Keel which some call the Shoal Keel. I like the Wing because you have a solid keel (no moving parts) and you still have a reasonable draft (only 8" more than the retracted swinger)
@Spoondawg00752 жыл бұрын
@@odysseyofjason mine is a full fin keel it drafts 2 ft. I like how you deploy the block to step the mast I really dreaded this process before. When I was a swabee lol

Is that the wing or fin keel version? You launch without an extension, I guess the log wheelbase and height make it workable?
@odysseyofjason2 жыл бұрын
It's the wing keel. My trailer has the extendable tongue but we didn't have it extended yet in the shot from the side.

What HONDA outboard is that as it looks like the perfect size? Also, your Dinghy looks really lite weight yet big and capable. What is your Dinghy and can the HONDA be transferred to the Dinghy or is it too big (I know nothing about boats)?
@odysseyofjason Жыл бұрын
It's a 5hp. The dinghy is a Walker Bay 8 but it's only rated for 2hp. I use an electric trolling motor on it.

How long can you stay on the lake in a cruiser, anchoring every evening, spending the night, but without a slip?
@odysseyofjason Жыл бұрын
The sky's the limit I suppose. The most we've done is 3 nights because we start to run out of provisions and our Ice has mostly melted. We almost always have enough for another night, especially if we caught enough fish to offset one of our dinners.
@gordonipock9385 Жыл бұрын
20 years ago people used to camp out on the lake all the time. The islands were popular places for camping, but I know now that you you aren't allowed to be on them after dark. This is a popular lake, and over the years the state and Duke Power have cut deals regarding how it is to be used and real estate development. They have added more state park areas, and I think you are only supposed to camp overnight on these campsites. I wondered if they had any rules about people just cruising around on larger boats and staying overnight on the lake. You would be on your boat, not the lake. I ask because I have the itch to get a small cruiser, something between 19 and 21 feet with a weighted keel. My main reason is its easier to solo a boat with a weighted keel, and I solo all the time, and I also thought it would be fun to stay on the lake for a few days at a time; also I thought I would take a bigger boat to a bigger lake, such as Norman, or even do some coastal cruising on the sounds. So I'm thinking about the same question for Lake Norman, too. I saw three people on James yesterday on a good-looking catamaran.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed seeing the Catalina 22 in action. I'm about to get into sailing. Currently looking at a Catalina 22 fixed wing keel similar to yours. You seem to be pretty happy with it huh? How long have you been sailing?

I just purchased my Catalina 22 two days ago. I have no clue. Are all the mast stays connected when the mast is lowered and secured except the head stay? It looked like in the video you just attached a pully system to the head stay and pulled it up into position. Could you explain please?
@odysseyofjason Жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new boat !! On my boat, The forestay and the 2 forward shrouds must be detached to lower the mast. The 4 rear shrouds and the backstay can be left attached and tensioned. As the mast is lowered, these remaining shrouds will go slack. While raising the mast, these same pre-tensioned shrouds will center the mast over the boat once you reach about 45 degrees. The block and tackle I use is 2 free spinning "double pulleys" for a 4 to 1 advantage. It is attached to the forestay. This allows a helper to pull the mast up with very little effort while I assist lifting, guiding the mast, and clearing anything that gets hung up.
