haha very entertaining. loving these videos and going through the same process right now with my boat (Island Packet 27, Thunderstruck 10kw)

Awesome! The tricky part for me was installing the mounting assembly. Once that was done, everything felt more certain. :D

Are you happy with it

So far very happy! But its only been a couple months, and I have years to regret it! :D

Hi mate. I like your enthusiasm. I'm about to buy a C30 and am wondering what size e-motor you are going to install?
@openrov2722 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm installing a 10KW motor from thunderstruck motors. Specifically this one: www.thunderstruck-ev.com/sevcon-brushless-sailboat-kit-10.5kw.html

@@openrov272 yes that is the one I'm looking at as well. What is your estimated amp draw for cruising at 5knots on a calm day? My situation is I could be motoring for up to 9 hours when there is no wind so performance is a big thing for me.

@Michael Stopp Unfortunately, what I have read online pretty consistently suggests that motoring for long periods of time, at as high a speed as 5 knots, is pretty infeasible. There is a spreadsheet on the thunderstruck site that helps estimate such things (eboat model spreadsheet. It is listed in the description for the motor in that link). According to that sheet, the motor would draw 130 A @ 5 knots. For me (with 10 KWh or 200 A @ 48v) I think that gets me just over an hour at 80% DOD. I think that means you would need closer to 90 KWh for 9 hours @ 5 knots. Though, dropping speed to 4 knots increases you range by about 62% , drawing just 67 A! (at 3 knots draw drops to 29 A.) All is not lost for full speed motoring (for me anyway) since I have a 15hp outboard for my dinghy which will push the Catalina 30 at hull speed. Whenever I need to motor for long distances, I can (and will) resort to the outboard. For day sailing, electric will easily do the deed, as well as days with favorable wind (obviously) :) TL;DR 130A draw at 5 knots.

@@openrov272 Thankyou mate, nice detailed answer. For some reason I can't open that spreadsheet.....

@Michael Stopp Here is a google share of that sheet. I also had difficulty (my computer told me not to download it!) recently when I attempted to get a new copy. Luckily I was able to find it still on my computer fro m months ago. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ak2DenXKekLYqy3_y1SNF0sfUave9Pu-/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=117405574190775181504&rtpof=true&sd=true Feel free to adjust it. Also you should be able to download a copy.

I take the 3 doors off even just for oil change.

Lol. We should have done that. It was very tight getting a wrench in there and a inch more of space would have made a big difference. Plus it would keep the doors from slamming closed all the time. Thanks for the good tip. :D

They are soooo long, and not super relevant. So I made them unlisted. They can still be found in this playlist though: kzbin.info/aero/PLLeegbeHhqqVZWBbyZZdI7omilt-DP99i
