I am installing an electric inboard in my Catalina 30 sailboat. The next step for me is to install the motor mount (which is also does gear reduction.) Split over the 8 days I spent time working on it.

Hey, cool videos. We are planning conversion as well, so your videos are great for us to learn. One question though: why you haven't you simply drilled additional holes in that vertical piece of thick metal and that way moved the whole thing down? That would have saved you need to cut your bout and probably saved a lot of time as well.

It is very thick stainless steel, and stainless steel is difficult to cut. It can definitely be done, but I didn't have the equipment to do it. I'm inclined to overthink things and then never get started! So, since I was sure I could make it work by cutting the stringers, I did that so I could move forward with the project. A machine shop could cut those holes though. And it would certainly save time. I think many boats will have inclined stringers anyway, and won't need to modify anything. :D

Hi! Thanks for the very informative vídeos. I m starting to replace my old diesel engine with a electric motor with a somewhat installation similar to yours, including two shafts joined by a chain coupling. What worries me is how to avoid the axial moviments of the propeller shaft. In your case is just the coupling holding it in place? Any comments?

The Gear Reduction/motor mount, that was part of my kit, has "Thrust protection to isolate the motor from axial propeller forces." - Basically it has a bearing to stabilize the motors end of the shaft. Does that answer the question?

@@openrov272 Thanks for your answer and it took me a while to see it. I also have a 2 shafts assembly united by a chain coupling. Did you ever have any problem with the propeller shaft moving axially? It seems to me the chain coupling holds the end shaft in place when it spins when the boat is sailing hard. No worries about that?

Can you help too specify the name, brand, size of that coupler and where to get it? Staying in a country not so easy to find this!

The coupler I used came with my kit from Thunderstruck motors. I have more details in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3u6YnxnntyFlcU and this is a link to the kit: www.thunderstruck-ev.com/sevcon-brushless-sailboat-kit-10.5kw.html It's sized for a 1" shaft, but they have various sizes.

can you point me to the batteries you used.. thanks

These ones. They also have regular, not-waterproof ones. They are less expensive. :D signaturesolar.com/eg4-wp-lithium-battery-48v-100ah
