Helpful comments. I would add that similar materials also work well together, even if the colors are not similar. For example, I combine silk rugs from Qum, Nain, Isphahan, and Turkey. Also, I have found that Sarouk rugs work well together, even if the colors are different. The floral designs and the sheen unify them. Funky Moroccan tribal rugs in a variety of colors, textures and designs work well in an informal room.

My solution was to cover every surface with rugs . That way, the eye has too much to see to care if it "matches".
