I did this on my 2004 Toyota Highlander and it worked like a charm. Catalyst Monitor kept being not ready for almost 2 weeks. Drove all the way from LA to San Diego and back, still failed. Did 6 drive cycles of going at 55MPH on the freeway for 10 minutes, still failed. Did this trick literally one time and it passed in the first attempt. Thanks!!

Magic trick!! Thank you so much!! I was desperate to make CAT ready for my 2001 camry to pass smog check, as I have spent many hours of on highway driving and put more than 500 miles without luck. It worked! Three mechanics gave me the wrong advice. So... I watched this video, bought a $22 code reader, and then drove to a bank parking lot. I put the car in neutral and revved the engine to 3000-RPM and held it there for 3 minutes exactly. I shut the car off and did the odb2 scan again. Catalyst = READY! Went back to the smog center and passed! (2008 Mercedes E350 with 110k miles) -- THANK YOU~

After replacing knock sensors I drove 2000 4runner 1000+ miles, every weekend for 3 months getting up at 4am to drive so as to not attract attention with expired tag going slow on freeway following Toyotas drive cycle pattern. It worked for my 2004 Toyota Highlander I/M readiness monitors were all checked off but catalytic still incomplete. After a Drive cycle was 150 miles in 2 days it seemed hopeless. So I started the engine to let it warm to normal temperature then reved it to 3000rpms for three mins. Let off the accelerator and scanned it again while idling. Cat monitor was READY Thanks for the video bro, it was really helpful 👍👍

Wow! I can’t believe this worked for me. I have a Toyota Camry 2001 and done the drive cycles but still fails on the scanner. Gave it one last try this morning on a cold start, kept the car in parked, stepped on the gas and held it steady at 3000 rpm for a little over 3min. Rescanned the car and the cat and evap drive cycles were cleared. Thank youuuuuuuuu! Very helpful vid. You saved me from thinking of replacing the catylitic converter.

This information was absolute GOLD for me!! I was finally able to get my 1997 Saturn SC2's catalyst ready in literally 3 minutes. In my case, I drove the car at 3,000 RPM in 4th gear (it's stick shift) on the freeway. I then checked the car with my scanner via the OBD2 and it was ready. Further, it passed smog in California!!

Randomfix today you just earned yourself a new subscriber. I own a 2001 Camry, changed a new catalytic converter and drove for 4,100 miles mostly on freeways and street. It was still not ready for smog test OBDII kept reading {Incomplete} Thank you so much because tomorrow I was planning to go back to the shop where they installed that catalytic to complain and get it changed/replaced. When you say you did it twice did you let the car cool down overnight before the 2nd attempt? Or did u simply let the vehicle idle for a minute after the 1st attempt before repeating the 3min part where u rev it at 3000 rpm?

Thanks for the video, here's my story. I have a 1999 Mazda B2500, and had gotten my renewal notice 2 months prior. Hadn't gotten it smogged yet, and early on the morning of the 5th of July it was stolen off the street in front of my house. Didn't think I'd see it again, but it was recovered almost a month later. They broke the clockspring when they busted the ignition, so I had to order and wait for the new one. I had to disconnect the negative cable to do the installation, there by making the drive cycles necessary. They had stolen my plates as well, and didn't want to be driving 300 miles in SoCal freeways without plates. Less than 2 weeks left to get renewal done. I took it on a local 2 lane road for about 10 miles. That left only the evap and cat to finish. I tried the method in this video but cat still didn't finish, so I took it out on the same local road and drove it in 4th gear (it's a manual) at around 50 mph keeping an engine RPM of 3500. The cat cleared in about four minutes. Just passed smog this morning.

I tried a few times like the video, with car parking 3.000 rpm for 3 minutes, but didn’t worked! So read a few comments and I tried like they said! First I drove the car around the parking lot for 4 minutes at 3.000 rpm and my oxygen sensor turn OK on scanner, but the catalyst still INC and a tried again and nothing happened. So I drove in a high way for 7 minutes 55 mph and 3.000 rpm, when I stoped the car catalyst was ready!! This work on my Mini Cooper convertible 2008!! Thank you so much for help us!

Thanks for the tip ! Doing this got my EGR ready, but the CAT stayed not-ready. I decided to go on the freeway and drove for about 3 minutes in 3rd gear with the RPM constantly at the 3000. My speed was on the average 62 mph doing this. This got the CAT in ready status !!! Did this to my son’s 2008 Mazda 3 which had the battery disconnected for weeks. So for those of you folks this tip did not work, try this variation. Again, THANK YOU.

I can not thank you enough for this tip. After paying for a new catalytic - wouldn't register in the car - drove 400 miles 2 tanks of gas, still one last warning wouldnt clear. I had a number of issues this year to get my 2001 Camry smogged. After some repairs to old hosts, cleaning EGR valve, etc, everything checked out except the catalytic drive cycle. Went back to the smog shop numerous times after 300-500 miles and kept being told "you need to drive it some more". Finally, the smog technician told me to look up Toyota's drive cycle to see what I may be missing. Ran that twice late in the evening hoping not to tick off any freeway drivers wondering why I was only doing 55mph and trying to maintain 35-45 on the trip back on a smaller road for both cycles. NONE OF IT WORKED. Came home, started looking and saw this video and after letting the car sit overnight, starting her up and letting her warm up, 3 mins at 3k rpm and the monitor went from INC to OK. THANK YOU for this tidbit of into! Now to get the car smogged!

00 Odyssey with 266k. Ran the same test holding at 3k rpm in park for 4 minutes. Readiness did not pass! Then got on the freeway and held it steady at 55mph for 3 minutes (no AC, no cruise control) and passed immediately. Just a heads up for Honda owners.

Thank you so, so much! I've been struggling with getting the CAT monitor ready. I've driven 524 miles, but it still would not complete. After following your instructions, it became ready, but this was after a second attempt. I was planning on driving several more hundred miles before seeing your video. It was so pleasing and rewarding to see that the CATALYST monitor turn from red to green on the scanner, just having it idle at 3000 rpm's for 3 minutes, after the engine warmed up, without driving an inch!!! Notes: 1. Make sure to do this in a well ventilated area, definitely not in an enclosed garage. 2. Start vehicle from cold and let idle for 7 mins (keep an eye on the temperature). 3. Press foot pedal until 3,000 rpm and let idle for 3 mins. Update one year later: I couldn’t clear the catalyst after trying everything and wasting so much gas. I just gave up and after 6 months of driving occasionally (wfh), I got it checked again and the cat was cleared. I had felt it wasn’t gonna happen so maybe try that if you are stuck. I paid the renewal fee but was driving around with an expired sticker luckily nothing happened to me 😂

Also what finally got me to pass the "Catalyst Not Ready" was to do the driving where you go about 65-70 mph then let the car slow down on it's own without touching the pedal.

I have a 2000 Yukon. This worked for me. What I did, was drive the truck in 2nd gear (number 2 on the dash) at 45 mph. This gear and speed was perfect for achieving a consistent 3000 rpm. I have a Bluetooth ODBII connected to my phone, so I literally watched the Catalyst Monitor go into 'ready' state as I was driving. It was around 10 mins of in town driving, which I had several stops in between. The reason why I drove until of doing it in my driveway is because my exhaust is fairly loud and I didn't want to disturb my neighbors. I just made a trip to get lunch a productive one, and it worked!

@@RANDOMFIX I ran the car twice for 3 minutes each time. It didn't work. What I found out that for many cars, the computer is looking for what's called a Drive Cycle. Each car has a different routine its looking for, like drive at 30MPH for 30 min, do certain full stop exercises, idle for 5 min. Each car has different drive cycles. The computer is basically seeing that you are driving your car regularly. My mechanic told me to drive my car on the freeway for 100 miles. That didn't work and was a waste of gas and time.

I was in the business for 20 years, but I've never heard of this trick. I can tell you how it probably works. At the air filter, your vehicle is sucking in 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and about 1% "other" like Carbon Dioxide, (Al Gore's favorite gas,) Helium etc. The ideal exhaust ends up as 78% Nitrogen, 16% Carbon Dioxide, 5% Water Vapor, 1% "other," and NO pollutants - HC, CO or NOX. One common misconception is the idea that if your exhaust has low pollutants, then everything is fine. The CAT monitor is not based on pollutants coming out the pipe, it's based on how well the CAT stores, and uses Oxygen, in the catalyzation process. This process is cyclic in nature, similar to the way an Oxygen sensor sends high / low signals to the ECM. First the CAT stores Oxygen, then releases it as needed, then stores and releases again. So the ECM monitor is looking for NO Oxygen at the rear, after the CAT, Oxygen sensor. This lack of Oxygen tells the ECM that the CAT is storing and using the Oxygen properly, and the monitor is completed. With this in mind, what probably happens when you raise the engine to a stationary high RPM, versus driving on the road, is you are putting your GOOD RUNNING engine in a state with a minimum of unused Oxygen in the exhaust. Any exhaust pipe leaks, before, but especially after the CAT, and before the rear Oxygen sensor, will doom the CAT monitor. An exhaust leak after the rear Oxygen sensor, will not affect this CAT monitor. Raising the RPM increases the exhaust pressure, which makes it more difficult for ambient Oxygen to leak into the exhaust pipe. So this added pressure, which masks the problem of exhaust pipe leaks, is a major key in this trick, in my opinion. This no load, high RPM condition, probably creates the lowest exhaust Oxygen possible, at the rear Oxygen sensor.

2001 Tacoma PreRunner 2.7 2WD. P0420 code was on, cleaned cats and replaced both O2 sensors, cleared the codes and drove around before inspection. Catalyst Monitor kept coming back not ready after HUNDREDS of miles of driving around and doing the stupid "driving cycles" on youtube. Just wanted to say thanks. Although these exact steps didn’t work for me on a 2003 Toyota Camry, but I knew where you were going with this. On the Toyota Camry, there is a button on the transmission stalk to turn on/off the “Over-Drive” system. Once I turn that OFF and drove it on the freeway, the Catalytic Monitor went to Ready. Basically, I needed to get to a higher RPM (above 3k) on the freeway for an extended period of time and that monitor will clear. When the over-drive is ON, it would always hover around 2k, this doesn’t make the catalytic converter hot enough and so the computer will never say it is ready. So if you have a vehicle with this type of over-drive transmission, turn it off and go for a freeway drive and in 10 minutes of freeway driving it will clear. I guess if I had to do it again I could have done this same procedure longer and it might work, so instead of 3 minute just let it rev up to 3k RPM for longer.

You hit the nail on the head. You have to get catalytic converters hot and when you turned off the overdrive you made the engine work harder and it produced more heat. I didn’t recommend turning off the overdrive as 3k rpm on certain vehicles like Chevrolets, bigger v6 and v8 motors will be destroyed as those motors lose oil pressure. Thank you again for sharing.

My catalys monitor would not come up and say okay after having work done on my truck because they disconnected the battery. I had been driving my truck with a bad misfire for several months because I couldn’t afford the replacement of the intake manifold. After finally getting it replaced I drove the truck for over a week and no luck with the catalys monitor. Then tonight I used a product called Cataclean. I Followed the directions and low and behold the cat monitor says ok! Omg I’m so relieved. I did try revving the engine to 3000 rpm three days ago after initially watching this video but it didn’t work for me. Anyway.. I just wanted to mention using the Cataclean in case anyone needs another method to try. Thank you for sharing your vid I’m sure you’ve helped many people.

I never got a code for them, just a slow monitor. But I drove for several months with a bad misfire and sometimes two cylinders were missing due to water getting in the plug wells. I’d remove the coils and clean them out from time to time but my check engine light would flash sometimes. So they’re probably not in great shape. Again thank you for making the vid and sharing.

Yo, came back to this video to say you’re a life saver, I was able to get all my monitors to read besides catalyst, even drove the vehicle for 3 minutes around town keeping rpm’s at 3k and it didn’t work, I figured I’d just pull over and try what you said cuz why not what do I have to lose? And guess what? It worked 😂 on my 17 370z
