Tip for holding things in place.... use a Glue gun and some small wooden blocks to temporarily hold things in place like bulkheads and anything else. No screw hols to patch later, just hammer the blocks off when the epoxy sets.

I used to work with fiberglass cutting corrugated panels into strips for a sunscreen outfit in San Leandro. Then I was a boatwright for years and dealt with f/g again too much. I watch you guys and all I see is pruritus with your bare arms and you look so cleaned up and fresh in the evenings. I am amazed. At 71 yrs old now I couldn’t do it much as I would like to. There must be a yard/marina shower nearby. I wince as I watch you. (and I itch in empathy with you.) I see you suiting up but even then when removing the coveralls and goggles, face masks etc. You end up with f/g shards and particles where you don’t want them. I don’t know how you deal with such and intense itch, especially in the warmth and humidity of the east coast. My best thoughts to you both.... I am watching these vids one after another as I just found your site. I’ll have to look into your past sailings and experiences. Shalom.

I have been following you both since the start of your built/re-fit of "Elements", and I know you are both very focused on safety and quality. However, at this point I would take a lesson from "Parlay Revival" and a lot of other Lagoon owners who are finding issued with cracked and de-laminated bulkheads. A great time now to ensure extra glassing and reinforcement of the bulkheads to avoid problems in the future. All the best and keep up the great work.
@MJSailing3 жыл бұрын
Just trying to get clarification from all the PR related comments on where we should be adding the extra reinforcements to these bulkheads. Is it at the tops of the doorways, leading to the area that connects to the deck, where we added 3 extra layers of both 0/90 and 45/45 double biased to each side, shown in this video here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJjLdaGGpq2koZI&ab_channel=MJSailing Or is it across the entire top section of the bulkhead, where it connects to the deck, (as well as around the doorways themselves) where we added ropes of unidirectional fiberglass and filler (to add strength) shown in this video here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHvZdZKJepWXjs0&ab_channel=MJSailing Or is it in another spot that has not been addressed by us??

Lots of talk about making the bulkheads stronger in light of the Lagoon 450 issues, the problem I see with doing this is you transfer the stress load to the bottom and unless you distribute the "new force" you could be just moving the failure point. Having fitted out my 39' cat from a bare shell, I'm wondering about the size of your fillets when you're fitting in the bulkheads. My designer (Mark Pescott) was very clear on the size of the fillet--basically I rounded an old putty knife and used that to create the shape of the fillet (after putting on the bog via the icing bag) the fillets were often 15-20mm wide providing as smooth a rounding for the glass to follow. I guess what I'm saying is don't skimp on the fillets. As you know, glass doesn't like sharp corners. Re the lessons from production cats, I would be making sure that your bulkheads are fully glassed down through the floor to the bottom of the hull and right around. I know a lot of production cats skimp on this. My bulkheads were solidly glassed all around through to the floor and there was never a squeak--even pounding to windward in 40 knots. One further question, are you prepping the surfaces of the hull and the bulkheads before applying the glass as it is a secondary bond? Phil

I know overbuilding adds weight but in selective areas like main bulkheads, I would consider it. Far better than under building. A little extra glass goes a long way and resist the temptation to make larger doorways (passageways) by cutting away more bulkhead. I'm sure Matt and Jessica will do it right.

I'm wondering if you guys are watching Sailing Parlay Revival? Colin there has a Lagoon 450 with cracked bulkheads that seems to be a design flaw. Might be worth watching the series just to make certain your boat doesn't have any similar vulnerabilities and maybe know where some extra glass might be valuable just in case. Not the same boat, but still an interesting watch considering you're building one now so now's the time to really take a look at what made his vulnerable to ensure yours doesn't contain any of them.
@davidhanson32883 жыл бұрын
Instead of cutting next to the hull. Id cut it out of the center of bulk head 5. Ask your engineer. That way all of your openings are centered. Is there a minimum distance from the hull to the opening. If your trim is within that dimension then trim away. Also if you apply that to the other bulk head openings you will find it has an even loading. And larger or maximum tabbing area on your bulkhead to hull.
@MJSailing3 жыл бұрын
Hi David. The doorways are measured from the bulkhead centerline (centerline of the boat), so their position should be symmetrical regardless of how much is taken off the outsides. The only one that's close to the theoretical edge is the one that leads to our aft berth, but this is HEAVILY reinforced to compensate (to the designers specs). Matt

Looking at this design from an engineering view. It reminds me of the old fashioned tool die layout. That was when the dies , especially large press tool dies were made of one piece of metal. If it got a crack you had to replace the whole die. I believe that these large bulkheads could be made in 3 sections, even using steel to fabricate as necessary. This would make assembly much easier.

@mattjohnson67163 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, Yes, the webs were installed from the boat yard. They helped to secure the hulls for transport, but also acted as reference for level when we were setting them up. Very convenient to have this done before we got it! We've made 90 flanges for other projects in the past, but the secondary bond on the vertical was the fear, so we'll be building these in hull. -Matt

As for sealing of walls and surfaces. May I suggest that you fill in the plastic bag with the glue concoction used by cake decorator, cut the end of it according to suitable opening then just squeeze it out on the area needed sealing. The concept is quite similar with the commercial silicone tube. Just a suggestion to speed up your sealing process.

Looking Good and you're making great progress. Moving around that sloped sub-deck seems challenging. Just curious: if it would make it easier on you to have a mini-deck of 1/2" - 5/8" plywood laying on top of those vertical walls in the bottom of the hulls so that you had a flat surface to walk on and not on the top edges of the walls. If necessary you could also put a small leg under each end to keep the board from tipping and if it was sized right it could easily be moved into any section where you were working. It would be easier on your backs, your feet and you would be less likely to damage the tops of the vertical braces. I didn't realize how the weather would impact the build, but hopefully, that doesn't throw off your build timeline too much.

The top sides have a flange that sticks out to be able to attach to the deck when we put it down, so for ourselves we found it easier to get the bulkheads in first. But with one hull side attached now (in real time), we're happy we went that route.
