Good advice. You're rapidly becoming the wise old man of the catamaran world.

In 12-20 kt winds, all cats can sail decent. It's when the wind dips to 7-10 kts that the more performance oriented boat can be sailing but the condo cat is almost for sure, motoring. Unfortunately, there's a whole lot of times and oceans that leave you with fairly light wind conditions.

I know you are right but I cannot put my head around it. I typically charter a lagoon 380 for 2 or 3 weeks, because that is what we can afford. I also charter a Catana 42 and it was a lot more fun to sail and was much faster then our body boat 45' monohull. Why then if there are so uncomfortable, that the resale value of Outremer, Catana and other dagger board equip Cat is so high beside the fact that there mostly owners boat, not charter? A 20 years old Outremer is still worth over $400 000.

@Catamarans 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Serge, what model/size (20 years old) Outremer are you talking about? Yes, the Catana 42 is fun to sail but they don't have room for air-conditioning or generators,. My wife would never go along with that. And those exposed helm stations will "get old fast" once you have to steer in a driving rain storm for more than 20 minutes.
@robertgeorge9909
@robertgeorge9909 5 жыл бұрын
That's because Outremer is a real sailboat. Are you buying a boat to sail or sit on at a dock. Houseboats make good dock boats.

@@CatamaransSorry for my lack of accuracy. 2000’s Outremer 45 ask for about 325 K US$ and 50 to 55 are asking for 385 US$. Still this is a lot of money for an old and simple boat. Same for older Catana that are a bit better finish. You can add bad forward visibility through the bridge deck to the Catana 42 and more. I like the way it sail but It would not be my boat. Thank you for your great advises and by the time, I am ready to set sail permanently, my need for speed might go down. Until then I will keep charter "condomarans". Maybe I will find one I like.

1-2 knots difference between the fat cat and the speed demon? Maybe if the speed demon was overloaded.

My 40 cat does 9.5 to windward with 2 queen beds 2 heads, etc. Try that with a production fat cat. Off wind difference is double digits.

Should a new, beginner learn to sail on a cat or a monohull first? (assuming the goal is to own a catamaran)

I own America's oldest sailing school (Castle Harbor) and we have trained thousands of sailors. I find that the best way to learn is to do each ASA level in different size and type boats ...Here are some tips:

What a gross oversimplification. A) He ignores a large number of influential factors including, but not limited to, the following: bridgedeck forward-aft placement, hull design (beyond fat vs. narrow), deck clearance, engineering in the underside of the bridgedeck (e.g., slope, nacelles), etc., B) He disregards the fact that "fat cats" can be overloaded as well (arguably more of a problem for "fat cats" given the potential lack of attention toward this issue by skippers and the generally lower deck clearances out of the yard), C) Sea state and direction of travel. You mention the former without really given the matter its due... Granted, to each their own when striking a balance that fits individual needs in a cruising catamaran. However, there are both "fat cats" and "speed demons" that I'd avoid due to known issues with slamming or that appear to have poor designs (e.g., low bridgedeck clearance is a deal breaker from the start). Bottom line, do your research on specific makes or models of interest before purchasing, and don't let such a poor explanation of the issue sway you one way or the other.

A) How do you know he doesn't know that? It was bc he didn't mention it? It was an introductory short video to the subject in general. If he has to address all of what you said it would be to long or whatever he believes. It was good explanation.
@petermahoney1938

@@yeyepp, I suspect he does indeed understand the details. The problem with his explanation was that it was an oversimplification to the point of being inaccurate. I understand more detail would have necessitated more time (and there are plenty of good introduction to the matter on YT and various blogs), but when one titles a video as he has done here, it warrants delving into sufficient detail so as to lay a foundation of understanding. He failed to do so, and instead pitched his biased opinion toward "fat" cats. As others have pointed out, he's in the business of selling such cats, so I can't say I'm surprised. All I'm saying is, don't take what he (nor I for that matter) has to say (as a single source) on the subject. Do your research and find a consensus of opinions for what best alleviates the problem. Also, I suspect you'll find a pattern of sound engineering that mitigates slamming (albeit with costs like increased windage, etc). But at the end of the day, you should always ask what's one person's stake in the game when relying on opinion. His is quite clear...

@@petermahoney1938 Reading the title and listening to the video it's fine. I's a 7 min video on YT he isn't in a catamaran congress where he discourse about all the implications of the matter. He basically said that fat cats are less affected by weight in the slam. He can keep talking about this in future videos no necessity of a long dissertation. I suspect that fewer people would watch it in if it's 48 min video. Also it seems to me that it's rude saying that is "what a gross oversimplification" "he ignores..." "being inaccurate" and implying that he's biased when your personal expectance aren't met. You could've add a lot of what you know of the matter in your comment without the aggressiveness or disqualifications.

@@yeyepp, I respectively disagree regarding the title and content of this video, hence my motivation to write a comment (which I believe is my first, btw). Of course, we are welcome to our respective opinions. I did not intend to come off as rude or aggressive and simply wanted to caution viewers given his poor handling of the topic, but I recognize that sometimes separating opinion from fact is viewed as such these days. I have no interest in an extended back and forth on the matter. I believe I provided constructive, albeit brief, advice for viewers. I should also mention that it took me 5 minutes to write my initial comments with more detail than his 7 min video, a full two minutes shorter (all without advanced prep or the need for a dissertation). I have little doubt he could have covered the basics, and provided basic recommendations for finding further details, in less than 7 minutes. Because I agree, few would have the interest to watch a "48 min video".

@David Miorgan , bahahahahahaha...I didn't realize what it took to be a sailor was having a KZbin channel or a business in the sailing industry. I guess that means the 99.9% of us who call ourselves sailors are really just kidding ourselves. I'm sorry providing a constructive response was an emotional trigger for you, eliciting a childlike response to a post from 6 months ago. To use a term I'm sure you are very familiar with...quit being such a snowflake. Well, troll, I would say this is a safe space, but I'm not done knitting my pussy hat (for all it's relevance to the conversation).
