I always go for the monopolization strategy. I like it because it creates a system where other players depend on you for that one resource, because they know you have a lot of it, and they can just trade whatever they don't want for the one that you have. That means you can essentially ask for any resource that you want

I think players worry far too much about losing cards to the robber. If you try and stay under 8 cards all the time, I often find you are frittering them away on stuff that doesn't really help you win. The cards you get don't always help you buy what you need to advance in the game, so you often need to save them up. I have a buddy who often has 20 cards in his hand, sometimes even more. Occasionally he will flame out because of a badly timed 7, but he also wins far more than his fair share of games, because he has the cards to buy the right stuff at the right time. I typically budget for losing cards to the robber twice per game. More than that and I've either been unlucky or played badly. Less than that and I've either been lucky or played well.
@su2me2rain9 ай бұрын
Totally agree. One example is city. It requires 5 and early on in the game, it might take forever to have 2 wheats and 3 ores. I often find myself in the position where I have 6-7 cards including sheep, ore, wheat but not enough to build a city. While development card is helpful in general, you may actually slow down your progress by spending your cards on dev cards too often and keep delaying your city upgrade.

@LegendaryTactics3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't work all the time for sure, especially with 4 players, but there's nothing worse than not being able to get that last resource you need to build a settlement and everybody at the table starving you of it. I do also like doing the ore wheat development route, but you need a port so you can convert or a monopoly so others will be forced to trade with you. Get one of everything is just more of a general guideline if the board will allow it with a strong pip count.

pretty noob tips. in original catan you really don't need a balance of cards to win. if there are good numbers on wheat, rock and sheep thats all you need. development cards will give you the flexibility to expand and the knights will give you control of the board so you're always rolling.

Super new to this game. But I feel like there is too much RNG. Thoughts?
@LegendaryTactics3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. That's part of why I think some people really love the game. The best player isn't always necessarily going to win. For me, that's a drawback. I love when the outcome is as closely linked to the skill of the player as possible. However, it does mean that it appeals to a really wide audience, including people who need a little luck on their side. There are tons of ways to mitigate the RNG and to work with it though, so it still has some value from a strategic perspective. When I play Catan, it feels like the scene from the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead where Ros gets heads 95 times in a row. that's my luck in Catan. But it will be the 12s and 2s that come up over and over while I'm sitting on 6s and 8s getting nothing while pondering my Existential lot in life.
@morganselchow97443 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I just got the game, and have only played it a few times. For me, it's maddening at how much luck is involved. However, I like how simple the game is, so you don't put in a ton of time, just to get destroyed by a streak of horrible luck. It's a simple game, with a healthy dose of skill, but the outcome will typically be decided by who the dice favors.

@Matthew Klingerman Proof that you're right is that there are players who consistently dominate at the National and International level. Ex: 1st initial settlement placement in order: Bob, Sally, Sarah, John 2nd initial settlement placement in order: John, Sarah, Sally, Bob
