Looking at this new Catana REALLY makes me appreciate my 20 year old Catana 431 even more.

Wow! What makes you say that? I'm looking at a 20 ish year old 522 at the moment.

In my humble opinion this catamaran has the best layout for it's class

Nice to see Catana ditch the rear steering stations on this model, that’s the right thing to do. I’d like to see them release a 45 Ocean Class now

I sailed this boat in both light wind and a gale (30 + knots). Very impressive. We did 5 knots in 5.5 knots of wind. Up to 12 knots against the wind in 30. The test boat was not completely set up yet and needed some adjustments in the rig, however, it sailed and behaved very well.

Hi Geo, that light wind performance sounds great for a boat with this much volume! In the BoatScopy youtube tour of this boat the Catana rep said their performance on the way to La Grande Motte show was 8-10 knots boat speed at 60-80 degrees with 15-18 knots of wind on the main and Genoa. Does that sound about right based on the time you had on the boat? We tend to do at least that on our Leopard 50 but we can't do 5 knots with only 5.5 knots of wind.
@lingeouhr2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJaycroz Yes, that sounds about right. In heavier wind, the Catana did not do as well as .. say a Outremer or my old boat a Schionning Arrow. However, it has a lot of very livable volume and with such great light air performance, it is a compromise that we were very interested in.

I have been wanting to review this boat for a long time. Thanks Toby

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this was a not up to snuff boat. The interior looks cheap and creaks a lot. I for one like the Bali's - they commit to what they do and are. They are big soft cruising Cats for warm regions. This one tries to be too many things and doesn't commit to being a performance boat. Though you have to sail it to know about it.

Beside the daggerboards, there is nothing I liked. This is what the market wants? The cooking in the middle of the room? The floor sound when lightweight Toby walks? The sun roof over the cockpit. Thanks for showing!

A galley in the saloon follows the great room idea, in that it's a natural gathering place for meals, lounging, working, etc. Most land homes get a lot of use in the kitchen area, for example, so a great room brings people together around the cooking hearth.
@endymion23002 жыл бұрын
the only benefit i can think of for a center kitchen would be easier cooking in rough water. but i still don't like it.

Would be great if you added some details like hull construction/materials & performance metrics into your walk throughs like SA/D ratio to give us an idea of how this boat stacks up to its competitors.

Why would you mount the remote (and cable) for the windlass RIGHT ABOVE the gypsy???? I can see it being sucked in dismembered and you have no control.

From initial conception to the present, it has been a long time! While Catana has had a past history of building "performance" catamarans, at 49.2 feet and 39,000 lbs light displacement (which is quite heavy), this is a luxurious cruiser designed for the Med and Caribbean.
@atadoff622 жыл бұрын
29,000lbs not 39,000lbs and it carries the same sail plan as the 53.
@realpaddy52702 жыл бұрын
@@atadoff62 Both the Catana website and the Catana "Ocean Class" brochure list the "light displacement" of the Ocean Class as both 14.5 metric tons (31,966 lbs) and 19.5 short tons (39,000 lbs). If 31,966 lbs is correct, the "dry weight" would be close to 29,000 lbs, as you stated. However, that is still heavy. It is designed to be a luxurious cruiser.

First I really loved the design, especially that indoor/ outdoor Bali style design, but here paired with a raised and somewhat protected helm position, not the old Catana open helm positions. However, all floors squeaks and it does not seem like that good quality essentially any bit of it. On top, the helm position is not that protected in bad weather, and to get to it or from it in bad weather, you will have to go out to open deck! That is just crazy! All competitors with a raised helm like that offer the possibility to go to the helm from the rear cockpit. The worst thing is though, that it does not commit to either being performance oriented or cruising oriented. Were did the money go in this one? A base price of near 1 million Euro, but spec here to the double! 1 million for instance could buy you a Windelo 50 fully loaded, including massive solar, battery capacity, hydrogeneration and hybrid drive and all, and it most likely also would outperform this boat. A newcomer beating the old Catana! At the 2 million Euro mark, fully spec, you for instance could save a bit a cash and for instance buy Xquisite X5+, also with an advanced hybrid drive included, Privilege 510 or a Neel 65!

I like some of the ideas of the design, but don't like some of the execution details, appearance, etc., as much. Hopefully she sails better than she looks.

Great review indeed! But the finishing quality is not matching the boat price tag. Did you find any door, which is not queecking, any floor which does not sound as it is going to collapse? Very good review of a rather ugly and poorly finished, altogether disappointing, boat.
