I believe it's pretty clear that their race influenced their push to the summit, ultimately costing their lives. While many teams turned back, these two were eager to beat each other.

These "records" seem to get more convoluted with every passing year. The first and most obvious record would be who summits a peak first, then who is the first woman or man to summit after that. I can even see nationality being something to record -- first American to summit Everest or something -- but then it starts to get silly. I'm waiting to honor the first red-haired female from Congo to summit Everest in a purple shirt during a full moon next.

What were the odds that Anna and Gina found themselves together at the very end of a long series of separate climbs; both striving for the same goal; both caught in the same avalanche. This was an incredibly sad outcome for all concerned. It's rare that one can judge such a disaster as "unfair", given the nature of the endeavor; but this event seems to qualify. They were so close. Doesn't seem right.

@mehrimazedeh I know, right? "Unfair" never comes into my mind when I hear about mishaps in nature. There's almost always a human decision or two (or three or .... ) that creates the circumstances for a disaster. And nature doesn't care about your goals or previous accomplishments. Even if the only decision is to take on a challenge in a natural setting, that's usually enough to discount fairness, or lack thereof. I just thought that given what these two were trying to accomplish and how close they were to achieving it; I wished nature could have just cut them a break this one time. I guess that's not how it works, though. I guess I need a different adjective to express this. "Unfortunate" maybe?

The women and their helpers died in two different avalanches. This and reports from other climpers show that on this day were very risky conditions. Whithout the race one or both of the very experienced teams would certainly have postponed the summit push.

Haha yeah, you and me both. As soon as a saw the story, I was on it. The backstory was already documented, so I worked on that part first, then waited for more reports about the victims in the following days. I was burning the midnight oil last night finishing it up, and working on it for hours the days before, so it wouldn't be be a monumental task yesterday. I thought it was important to get it up first, since many of my fellow KZbinrs in this niche I'm sure are working on this right now. Always appreciate your support OJ!

When first climbers not Instagram tourist’s masquerading as climbers climbed 14 of the tallest peaks it was done without oxygen, fixed ropes or short ropes and Sherpas where not used. Now millionaires can hire experienced Sherpas with fixed ropes and oxygen to run up to the mountain in 2-3 years but it’s worthless. If I take an elevator up the mountain can I say I climbed it??

Gutu had no climbing/mountaineering experience whatsoever. She just took Nim's climbing class, climbed Lobuche Peak, and then Manaslu October 2022...and all 14 fever started from there. If you call that experienced, let it be.

So she can help others and summit many difficult mountains but apparently still be labeled “inexperienced”. She died in an avalanche, the same way many experienced mountaineers have died. The insufferable gatekeeping is wild. I think y’all are just mad that she was so naturally talented and picked it up quickly whereas it takes other people years to accomplish what she did

I think they all know that this can always happen. It must have stung if they even had the time to think about that they had been so close to reach their goal. But dying in an avalanche as a mountaineer, must be the least "regretful" way, at least as I imagine, because that's just bad luck and no fault of your own. When so many deaths on 8000ers are due to bad decisions and unnecessary risk-taking. I want to believe if we could ask them now, they would be content having died doing what they loved, and due to bad luck and no fault of their own.

Climbing these mountains and pulling on fixed ropes that someone else put in place for you and basically following a beaten path in the snow from others just isn't impressive. The expeditions in the 70's and 80's without oxygen were impressive, where they had to do all the prep work themselves. The Polish guys who did the 14's in winter or by a new route were truly impressive. Using bottled oxygen just brings the mountain down to your level instead of climbing the mountain at its level.

Completely avoidable tragedy. There was an avalanche 2 days earlier and many alerts of fresh snow and risk of avalanches at high altitude. They both pushed knowing that the conditions were not right. I't's unfortunate but they wereirresponsible and they paid for it.
