Seems to me that dropping the engine would make replacing the engine the easiest solution if you can get a working engine at a good price in the UK. I'm sure you will figure out what is best. In the meantime,your perseverance is inspiring to me and makes my day brighter. Thank you.

Yep, if anything has to go it’s the critters. The mechanical projects can wait in the workshop. The critters are constantly destroying your home. They bring you no joy. Your projects do. Best of luck. Love your channels.
@richardjones52558 ай бұрын
It is an issue of priorities and the biggest benefit, I agree with your analysis, clear the creatures,. protect the house and then deal with the other issues in turn. The VW engine is an issue, getting it out would allow better access to the bolt and the oil leak, Plus, you would be half way to putting the new or repaired engine in. The snapped off bolt might have been work hardened just to make drilling it out more exciting.
@russellgiles15318 ай бұрын
The broken bolt is in a blind hole, but it will not be bottomed out. I'd try a left hand drill bit, you might find it will unscrew the broken bit 🤞

Well, being completely honest at this point it would probably be easier to just replace the engine in the van. Yes, I know that it can be fixed, tap and die, tensioner, new seals, probably a tune up and keep going. The question to all that is: is that engine completely worth it? By getting a new one to bolt back in the van you would be able to get the rest of it done and be in use. Plus, that would offer you an engine that you could break down and either use as parts or rebuild it. I like working on them myself. Good luck with the uninvited guests at the Chateau. Have a great day

Re-tired Engineer whenever I had bolts that were snapped that far in to centre it for the drill I got a cap head bolt put it in a lath and drilled the centre with a drill just under the tapping size then hopefully if you damage the hole with the easy out then I would use the correct size drill for the tap then tap the thread best Regards from Liverpool

Just to add my 2pence worth. As you have the equipment. Taking the engine out, may be your quickest solution. You will have full access to all parts. Even to get the broken bolt out with extractors. Etc. If you find that the valves have been smashed you will be one step closer, for a replacement engine. Good luck which ever you decide. Great content keep it up.

A real catch 22. I have faith you'll figure it all out, Phil.
@Ragnar85048 ай бұрын
I wonder if you've got enough thread in the block to fit a new tensioner with a shorter bolt for testing purposes. Other than that I suspect it might be engine out time, drilling out the snapped bolt in a deep blind hole sounds like a nightmare. Al of 6D Diesels recently did a video on replacing a T4 TDI engine, if I remember correctly because a big end bearing seized and a con rod created additional crankcase ventilation.

It’s great that your golf cart started. And I’m not being a hater. But sometimes I think you just have so much on your plate. That I’m trying to think how to explain it. It seems like there’s always so much to do between the château your business, and now the vehicles. But you never get time for your mind just to settle down and enjoy. And I don’t want you to take this the wrong way because I sincerely worry about you. Have you thought about just buying some land and building a new house that looks old Incorporating the things that you enjoy about the château. But without all the constant work. It’s such a big yard. It’s such a big house. It just seems to me like it’s overwhelming. And I think people need a space where they can go and just relax. And you do not have that. And I. I mean you could have somebody working outside that château in the yard every day. Just keep up with it. Let alone the inside. It’s just an idea to have something newer that you wouldn’t have to constantly worry about. like I said, I enjoy both your shows. I enjoy you you’re always in a positive frame of mind. Which is enjoyable I just worry about it. I worry about all the pressure. You have all the worries you have. Anyway I’m glad the golf cart started.

what are the chances of finding a salvaged engine? I would imagine that drilling and tapping a new thread onto that broken screw tip might be possible, but, if the engine has been dead for a while, a replacement/ salvaged engine might be the better solution to make the van last longer

First thing to find out is if that engine is an “interference “ engine or not. If the timing belt breaks on some engines, the pistons do not hit the valves.
@6109river8 ай бұрын
I know the feeling, lately what ever I touch there seems to be a problem, suddenly the double door to the man cave the hinge broke, yesterday the padlock separated and I had to find an O-ring to insert it so it doesn’t fall apart, the exhaust fan lights stopped working so I had to fix all seven wires and this took a while but now I cannot shut the filter draw as the wires are now longer which isn’t a problem,

@CraigHuntBC8 ай бұрын
How about installing a new cam belt tensioner using the shorter/ broken bolt & then getting the motor started to see if the valves bounced off the pistons or not. That will help you decide if the motor is worth pulling to either fix the broken bolt or replacing with a good used.

Ditch the range rover at Billys, and either sell the VW van as really don't need the stress and hassle. With the van if really wanting to keep it I would just buy a known working engine in the UK and then sell it. I would have less projects and a more modern, reliable daily driver. I have a reliable Volvo 940 auto estate and a more modern Toyota Auris Hybrid estate. Volvo in tank fuel pump failed at 201,000 miles but £80 Bosch pump and 6 hours of my time was fixed. A real good workhorse.

Can't you do like you did with the bolt and instead of welding, maybe sodder a bit onto the screw left in the engine and then unscrew it that way. Like drill a skinny hole in the middle of the broken piece and sodder something to it that you can then grab with clamps to twist it out
