Typhoons have made the situation worse in several parts of the world. Floods are the most common natural disaster but this year, their impact has been catastrophic. Floods are becoming more intense and frequent and climate change has a major role to play.

Things to own: high water boots, shovels, masks, head coverings (shower caps, hard hats, scarves), rubber gloves, safety spectacles, buckets for slop, camping stove and fuel, blankets, tent, knife, machete, insect repellents, raincoat along with the above mentioned water and non perishable food. Ps. Keep important papers (birth cert., passports, diplomas, degrees, S.S. info., bank info, insurance info, family photos, etc. in water proof and if possible fire proof containers. Much of these might get washed away but if they do not, it'll be helpful.

Any well thought out development will be overwhelmed with enough water. But the root causes of the extreme damage we see is development around the world is not planned well. It's driven by the white envelope and the need to increase economic growth (like a Ponzi scheme) without consideration of the ecology. So a large area of forest is cut down UPHILL from a development and low and behold: it rains a good amount (not like this) and there is flooding downstream. Before the forest could absorb the rain and filter it (watershed) but in many developments the ground cannot absorbe the rain and instread it's diverted to retention ponds or shunted away. Then we wonder where the ground water went? We live on a very unstable planet but that doesn't mean it's unhabitable. Much of this is manmade. We've seen deforestation and what that brings in the future.

the south states are hit hard with flooding as the soils are packed dry for months on end. Hard packed soil is like the linoleum on a floor. It’s not like a sponge it takes awhile before it even starts being absorbed once that starts all hell breaks out. Most of these places worldwide experience flash flooding. Knowing this shop owners should figure out a way to protect their store’s & merchandise.

Thank you very much for this very insightful video and the list of preventive measures followed by the well explained disaster planning- disaster recovery plan + advise and continuity planning advice for the future as these events , as you mentioned, which are being triggered since mid 90 with man’s made greenhouse activities, will continue, thus a higher risk for these events to recur in both frequency ( multiple per year) and in intensity, thus a higher shocking impact around the globe in the years to come… therefore, better getting prepared via disaster plan, disaster recovery planning, activity continuity planning , documentation and practices.. Most of this rain is a direct result of the hunger Tonga volcanic eruption which spewed so much water into the mesosphere and it will stay there for years. Last year it affected the southern hemisphere but this year it's making its way into the northern hemisphere. The eruption caused a 10% increase in the total atmospheric water content. 10% that is not a trivial amount.

Amen. Living near a medium sized US river, parts along the north bank would flood every 2-3 years. Insurance warned they wouldn't pay for any future damage, the city condemned the area and now there's a lovely riverside park. I feel the same for beach property which should've never been built on for 2cd, 3rd and 4th homes.

We are aware of global warming and my slight complaint about this public service format is that various places are cited but the impression is given that all floods have the same causes or blanket cause. Such over-simplification is misleading and First Post should follow up with collation of causes per area. It has the quality journalists to do this and is trusted all over the world. Of immediate interest is emerging evidence of China's floods and strange associated phenomena resembling 'plagues' of antiquity, well recorded in Greco-Roman history and literature. Oriental writings of antiquity are less coherent due to many such events being passed down aurally. It is possible that China's recent experience could include linked small earthquakes from Japan to the Indian Ocean as well as volcanic activity some layers of strata under the modern layer of ground caused the release of pressure and heat, also opening up sink holes which occur in all continents from time to time.Sink holes on the sea bed of shallow seas are known to release methane, heat, sometimes lava and complex carbon/nitrogen mixtures of gases not known until the cusp of the 20th century. This whole area of study in relation to the great heat engine which we call the Earth needs to enter public consciousness as much as pollution in the later Anthropocene era = now.
