Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
The heaviest, unprecedented rainfalls hit the countries of central and eastern Europe. Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia were among the affected countries. But the situation in Poland is especially severe and catastrophic. The heavy rains brought by the cyclone began in Poland 2 days ago. Since then, the water level has begun to rise rapidly, the situation is especially critical in southwestern Poland. The dams holding back the water pressure are already overflowing and are carrying out emergency water discharges. The Lower Silesian, Opole, Silesian and Lesser Poland counties are at risk of flooding, but the situation is worst in the Lower Silesian and Opole counties. In Głucholag, a historic town in southwestern Poland near the Czech Republic, rescuers have poured hundreds of sandbags by the river. Some sections of the road have been washed away, and some highways are impossible to drive on due to flooding. Several hundred people from the town of Kłodzko have already been evacuated in the region. Prudnik Mayor Grzegorz Zawislak called on residents of Suszczanka, Prudnicki Lug and the part of Prudnik adjacent to the Prudnik River to evacuate. Forecasters say that Poland has now seen significantly more rainfall than in 1997, when Wroclaw was flooded by heavy rains. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the flood situation could worsen. The official stressed that the following night would be decisive, with record rainfall on that day, which would significantly worsen the situation. The Polish authorities have not yet reported any casualties
