Her voice is so full of character and really makes the band; too many singers today seem to just be clones of one another, going for the apparent security of sounding like someone else as opposed to being bold and unique as themselves

Towards the end of my uni days, this was absolutely massive in Swansea. It uplifted everyone as did 'Mulder and Scully'. The 90's & early 00's were a brilliant time in Swansea and Cardiff with Catatonia, Manics, SFA, phonics, and more. Never get those times back but it's great to have these bands/tunes on demand and the memories that flow. I do miss hearing my beloved Welsh accent.

Same trajectory only 60s 70s and 80s for me. Musically the 80s was ‘my decade’ but there was a real purple patch in the mid/late 90s and this is top quality from Cerys (always puzzles me why this wasn’t a huge hit internationally).

Why would anyone wanna sound American
@SKINDEREE
@SKINDEREE 9 жыл бұрын
If you want to make it over the pond the record execs prefer you to sing in an American accent, As they think it sounds better. So Joss Stone doesn't try to sing in an American accent ? Have you listened to Jake Bugg singing like a Buddy Holly Rip Off ? Leona Lewis has went over there and fell into the trap ! Amy Winehouse sang like an American as well These four are from London, Nottingham and The West Country and not one of them sound representative of where they come from. I am using those four as examples and there are many more. I don't see the point you are trying to make in regards to Cerys Matthews because she is using her own accent and sounds original. In the past the British singers were unique in that respect but it is now becoming less common as time goes on. Yes there are still some bands and singers who are original but the manufactured clones are becoming more and more prevalent !

*This was one of my favourite bands and songs as a kid growing-up in the 90's. I also used to love Bjork and Pulp. The good old days of listening to music on cassette tapes. I still love them today and the 90's will always be my favourite era and best decade musically. At least more alternative and rock bands got the deserved attention and chart success back then without selling out, using autotune and getting naked whilst holding a beats pill stereo.*

I heard this blaring from someone's car stereo passing my workplace the other day, great song. I hate to sound like an old fogey but there are precious few post 2000 songs I hear that I can appreciate at all, let alone love hearing suddenly coming from a stereo/TV ad/internet/restaurant etc. Bloody gym I go to plays God knows what, stuff I presume is a selection of latest nightclub fare, and I just do my best to block it out, lol. It's a real treat when my ears hear something good!

90's Brit pop was the coolest thing in those days but little did we know it was just knocking out the final vestiges of British culture.

Brit pop sucked (apart from Blur). Late 90s music was too depressive.

I’m a big aficionado of a good female vocalist, I’ve always preferred female voices over male voices, as a musician. I just discovered this band, though I faintly knew this song in the back of my mind, but this singer had what is, in my opinion, the absolute epitome of female vocals. This is super subjective to me but just wow, the tone and timbre of her voice, with a kind of rugged boyish quality to it, but with the unmistakeable softness of the female vocal cords. It’s just perfection in my opinion. I’m very very happy to add this band to my library! Edit: also that final chorus, just oh my god the way she stretches to hit those highest notes, I actually cannot stop smiling 🥹

@@charismagold819 ahahh I'm not sure _all_ welsh girls have rugged and boyish voices (or at least they didn't when I lived in Cardiff!), but her Welshness definitely does add to her singing, I'll give you that! 😂 I love how she rolls the R in "road RRage", that's definitely the welshness coming through strong haha
