Lyrics:
The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
So if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists.
Bullets for your brain today
But we'll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder.
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
Will be next, Will be next, Will be next.

I exclusively read the excerpts and context filler in Playboy magazines. Honestly, there are some extremely well written, insightful and very innately subjective anecdotes, which gives valuable, varying and vicarious perspectives on otherwise very taboo content, which others may learn a very great deal from. Plus, the women often have massive jugs, which is always nice.

A lot of people in the comments who arent aware of the actual meaning of the song. It references the Spanish civil war, and if we dont acknowledge history and stand against it then it'll repeat itself - your children will commit atrocities. This is an anti-fascist song. "If I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists"
@rh8338
@rh8338 Ай бұрын
Sure, all valid points, but it's now 2024 and the "this" in the song title is now something completely different. We now have a socialist government turning on their own people. The current upheaval in the UK may have nothing to do with what the song was originally written about, but the song title is certainly striking a chord with millions of people right now.
@ampedwales
@ampedwales Ай бұрын
@@rh8338again, they've got this absolutely wrong. The Manics are a socialist band. The video starts with a sample of Internationale, aka the socialist workers anthem. The "This" will never be about what you're referencing. The Manics aren't xenophobic - see Let Robeson Sing, a song which references the ills of apartheid and McCarthyism using the story of a socialist figurehead.
@rh8338
@rh8338 Ай бұрын
@@ampedwales The new "this" I was referring to is about innocent young British children being stabbed to death. I don't think people really care right now about the original meaning of the song. In 2024 - an era of lazy sound bites and buzzwords, all they see is the song title, and yes although the song is originally about something completely different, the title on its own has struck a chord with British people in the light of recent events. And are you implying that people who are unhappy about little British children being stabbed to death are xenophobic? Right now it's not about the Manics and what they stand for, that's irrelevant. Right now it's about a simple song title that reflects the current climate in the uk. Whether or not the general public are right or wrong to adopt the title to protest against current events is open to debate, but it's now being used by British people as a stark warning to what will happen if this reprehensible violence continues.
@ampedwales
@ampedwales Ай бұрын
@@rh8338just like when Ronald Reagan was using Born In The USA, completely incongruous. I suppose it is kind of apt that these people are misinformed about this song, just as they were completely misinformed about the actual incident. The difference is, being misinformed about this song, whilst incredibly silly because the lyrical content is plain to see, is trivial. The misinformation that led to the events we've witnessed, isn't. It's utterly futile.

Definitely and it just gets better. I also love their acoustic version's which i think are better. There some versions with the 3 Manic's on acoustics and some with just James Dean Bradfield on an acoustic, stripped right down to the most basics, an acoustic guitar and a vocal, which James really gets himself into the song and you see and hear how much it means to him, he's singing his soul out.

Chile, October 2019. We said enough is enough and we are fighting neoliberalism, healthcare, education, water, electricity, roads, and everything you can think of is privatised. Our salaries are very low, and our pension system is so bad people have to continue working after they retire. We are protesting in the streets but we are only getting tear gas bombs, bullets and violence from the police and the army, we need help, I always listened to this song and I was so sad because in my country we were all blind and deaf, indifferent to our own people's pain. Now I am more positive, at least we are all united fighting.

@@redplague Because the song is written about the Spanish Civil War it in no way prevents the lyrics hitting home with other things. Also intrinsically most problems throughout history are repeating cycles, and as such anything about one thing instantly applies to many others. Also get this, art is what you make of it always will be, and if you think anything ever made can only be what it's creator specifically made it to be. Then your attempt to sound clever and perceived sense of superiority; because you believe you have a correct answer against wrong ones. Only shows you to be stupid and very limited in your ability to critically think.

@@EddThe19th You have have completely failed to understand how my reply relates to the original comment. I'll repeat it for you Mr Critical Thinker. "This song makes more sense today than it ever has". I never said it couldn't be reinterpreted for a different time. I was doubting how it makes more sense now than what it was actually written about with a mind that maybe only those who didn't understand what the song was about would think that. I'm afraid your own attempt to sound clever has utterly backfired. How embarrassing for you.
@EddThe19th
@EddThe19th 3 жыл бұрын
@@redplague No it really hasn't that's some A grade twisting to try change a stance, worst of all it makes absolutely no sense. Not only is it a sentiment that isn't conveyed by the short sentence you wrote, but given the song at no point makes a direct reference and the fact that metaphor is such a heavy part of most modern imagery. It absolutely can make more sense now. Most importantly it's still an artistic production, as such is an entirely subjective experience. If the message, feeling or take away someone gets from it feels more real, or like it makes more sense than ever before, then that's an entirely correct fact for them.

Apparently this song is about the Spanish Civil War I read in a BBC interview with Nicky Wire. I had no idea - I'm 40 and my 96 grandmother who's still very much with us was evacuated from the Basque region of Spain in the 1930s. World War II then intervened and she remained in the UK - moving to Wales with my Welsh grandfather in the early 70s and settling in the Vale of Glamorgan.

To add to the history observations: the song's title comes from a slogan of real republican propaganda poster from the Spanish Civil War and the line "If I can shoot rabbits, I can shoot fascists" is a quote from the book "Miners Against Fascism" by Hywel Francis. I love songs inspired by real history and the message is still so relevant.

LYRICS The future teaches you to be alone The present to be afraid and cold "So if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists" Bullets for your brain today But we'll forget it all again Monuments put from pen to paper Turns me into a gutless wonder And if you tolerate this then your children will be next And if you tolerate this then your children will be next Will be next, will be next, will be next Gravity keeps my head down Or is it maybe shame At being so young and being so vain Holes in your head today But I'm a pacifist I've walked La Ramblas but not with real intent And if you tolerate this then your children will be next And if you tolerate this then your children will be next Will be next, will be next, will be next, yeah will be next And on the street tonight An old man plays with newspaper cuttings of his glory days And if you tolerate this then your children will be next And if you tolerate this then your children will be next Will be next, will be next, will be next

@@nzuncovered1845 All wars either war between countries such also civil wars is beyond terrible and undescribeable. War have always affected people that even have no reason be there. The war in middle east is terrible even today is still ongoin. Many lives is and was lost and will be lost. And many more places still today has the same issues in other parts of the world. People have fled to other countries for their survival in fear and with luggage of traumatic experience. Even an example of the war of in the past such as wallis and futuna was terrible. And that you should know that because its not to far from you are if you are in NZ. Why this war particulary is important is because if it escalates. It will be involvement on different kind of level. Could reach a worldwide dissaster. And if more countries gets into war then it already is. It will also have respond of every action that will follow. Think About it. And your civilian non attack comment is "invalid" An old friend of mine that had a girlfriend that died 2014 in a attack while she was trying to flee towards the border as a civilian. The blew up the car. And i never mentioned on the other comment about nato. Nothing that finance warfare is good. No country or Allied of kind any kind like nations or agreements. For the record. If a you had nothing to loose anymore. Especially when it is not going as it was planned. What is stopping you from an action to send multiple nuclear missiles at multiple targets at the same time. And even if the missiles would nt hit their targets. The longterm damage will last generations and the spread of radiation would reach overseas by wind. Just for an example. Chernobyl that was a accident that did reach as far as northern sweden and still today in the soil there with some surface digging contains traces of that radiation today.
