I use fly fishing hooks for my surf perch fishing -- small gap, long shank are perfect for the sandworms real or plastic. Never had a perch come off using them. Technically you could use Aberdeen hooks as well.

That spot has been really blowing up lately among local YT anglers. Glad to see DC getting some fishing exposure as well! So many great places to wet a line in the ocean right in our backyard. Damn now that I think about it, with Ranch 99 being so close, you could probably load up on fresh bait there then do some rockfishing around Mussel Rock a short ways down the beach. Maybe _I_ need to explore DC more haha

You might wanna add a bead between your egg sinker and your barrel swivel. The clashing of the weight sinker against the knot tied to the swivel over time will weaken the knot and can prematurely snap off your barrel swivel and leader.

We regulars that have been fishing here for years call this spot "Center Hole." By the way,cleaning and washing those perch from that street run-off water probably wasn't a very good idea....... Using the ocean water its self would have been much cleaner and safer..........

In the 80's raw sewage use to flow out of that big pipe,I use to go down there fishing for perch when I was a kid, I lived up the street on Northridge.
@joearrata607 жыл бұрын
Yes,back in the 60's through 80's raw sewage use to be pumped out of there. And about 3/4 of a mile north of that at Thornton Beach there use to be another pipe,and 3/4 north of Thornton which is Fort Funston,there is another pipe there as well. All had one thing in common,it let out raw poop!!!!! That was a while back,but man......the smell that came out of those pipes would turn anyone's stomach.
@bobfoster25037 жыл бұрын
Damn! Haven't heard the word "Center Hole" in ages! I hauled up many bass and perch up that hill. In the old days,fishermen could park and drive down the trail of Muscle Rock up to the breakwall and we would sometimes walk miles and miles to Ocean Beach hooking up countless of bass on metal and top water.

I'm actually looking at buying a Okuma SST rod 9' . It will be primarily for surf fishing. What's your opinion?
@philosophyd7 жыл бұрын
What would you be going for? The rod I was using was a light to medium action. I'd suggest a medium action if doing primarily surf fishing. But I have to say that the rod was really a lot of fun. It made fighting perch almost like fighting stripers. I can't imagine if I hooked up on a striper.
@G224u7 жыл бұрын
Philosophy D it's a medium heavy fast. The rod feels amazing. I like the feel of the fight as do all of us.

On the internet and in sporting goods stores you can buy these very flat rocks to slide the blade of that knife over (several times) and it will decrease the brute force and sawing action that is taking place when you filet your fish. Handy tool to have. Your knife is cutting about as well as a plastic spoon.

Did you clean your perch on a sewage drainoff? :(
@paulc74007 жыл бұрын
Vincent Yau Depending how remote/country it is where they're at its just rain/mountain water runoff from the gutters. seeing as how there's a mcguyver set up funneling it out seems like fishermen have deemed it safe abd been using it for awhile.
@supaflyscifiguy7 жыл бұрын
In my past, I was involved in a few scientific studies of beach water quality, and runoff sources (rivers, drains, etc) were all associated with higher bacterial loads (e. coli, etc)... It didn't have to be human runoff, but rain carries animal feces, fertilizer from any agriculture, etc. down to the ocean. If they cooked it well (in butter) I think they would be ok, but the idea of rinsing in animal feces water, then sterilizing over high heat just isn't as appetizing to me as using bottled water, or even seawater.
@paulc74007 жыл бұрын
Vincent Yau while i agree using water from such a runoff doesn't help but if we're talking about bacteria in our foods, all if not most supermarket meats carry some sort of fecal matter/bacteria on them. i think they did a test where 90% of ground beef came up with literal shit in them with the way we process our meats and chicken was just a little better. e.coli outbreaks are basically saying theres a little too much shit in the meat on that occasion. and i still love a good burger
@supaflyscifiguy7 жыл бұрын
Yep, hard to control meat that we get from stores. Just pointing out a safer way to handle fish that we collect ourselves.
