Great video, best so far on Catch can install on this engine. I will go mine like yours. The catch can, you can insert inside a coarse steel wool to catch any dirt. Makes a good filter. Thanks for the excellent video step by step and straight fwd tutorial. Always love your video production. Bright lights and no music. easy peasy....

Thanks for the kind words . Had the steel wool idea in mind when installing the catch can, but want to see how much oil is accumulated in the can before putting the wool in.

Great video. The leaks on the oil cooler in this motor, the M272, is a common issue. It would be great if you make a video about the change of the gasket or a solution for this. Thanks!

Recently I’ve had the problem with oil suction into the intake and would also rather think about something you’ve done. Everything was much easier: I changed 2 intake gaskets before the throttle body and since then everything works fine. Old gaskets let some air in and changed the proper vacuum in the motor ventilation. Now there is no oil consumption anymore

Hi, thank you for your video, the m272 still has 1 more PVC valve, can the oil separator be installed like that?

The can also comes option with a breathing filter. Is there any benefit or cons from having the filter?
@ZakiGarage
@ZakiGarage Жыл бұрын
Good question but I wouldn't know the answer to. I would guess using the filter and venting to atmosphere on modren engines would create a vacuum leak that would cause idle issues.

Never thought of this solution before. I thought I was the only one replacing the manifold only to have it throw a code again 1 year later 🥲 I did have the separator leaking on one side so I fixed it. However you are right, I still see oil stains on the throttle side so this might actually be a great solution before replacing the manifold again. I think you did OE separator to catch can to manifold. Is this better than other configuration or is it just random? Also did you notice any performance issues ?
@ZakiGarage
@ZakiGarage Жыл бұрын
I had your same issues, even after replacing the factory pcv still getting the codes. The car is on its 3rd manifold and might need a 4th soon without the catch can. I did clean the throttle and used an intake cleaner spray after installing the catch can and haven't had the codes ever since. I will still use the intake cleaner spray with every oil change to clean all the old oil deposits from before the catch can to extend the life of the current manifold. Yes, I did OE separator to catch can to manifold like you said. Did it that way since it was the easiest way I saw and don't want to delete the factory system, plus its reversable if I ever wanted to go back with no catch can. No performance issues other than not seeing the check engine lights again.

@@ZakiGarage I am having a code 0521 - The charge movement flap (cylinder bank 1) has a malfunction. I will clean it but I wouldn't be surprised if I still had to replace it and add the catch can to avoid this happening again. Beloved E class never fails to keep the suspense. (Edit: No check engine light and the code has been there for the last 1 / 1.5 years at least)
@ZakiGarage

@@walidmorsi7156 if its the charge movement flap I'm guessing ether you have a bad vacuum line controlling the flab (I'm assuming its controlled by vacuum lines) or the most likely you'll need a new manifold. Better not to leave it like that for long, don't want the flaps to break off and go into the engine and destroy it, I think I read about that somewhere. And if going to do the manifold do recommend changing the oil separators and all the intake vacuum lines along with the catch can to prolong its life like you said.

Great video I just installed mine as well on the m273 and its been a few months and there is nothing in the catch can is this normal? I was nervous there may be an obstruction? Would I get a check engine light if there was an obstruction in the catch can or any of the hoses? Also does it matter which side you use for in or out? Mine was not labeled but I think the side with the filter is my inlet.
@ZakiGarage
@ZakiGarage Жыл бұрын
Mine also is very slow in gathering oil, its been 6 months for me and still just a small amount of oil gathered. But the most important thing is no more oil on the throttle body and into the manifold and smooth engine. Sprayed an intake cleaner with the engine running with this instillation, engine has never been smother for me. I also had concerns like you but I wouldn't think there is an obstruction. The In\out direction could be a reason but I'm also suspecting the length of the hose. I'm wondering if oil condenses in the lines and returns to the oil seperator before it gets to the can.
@Dnasty1
@Dnasty1 Жыл бұрын
@@ZakiGarage this was my concern mainly as well that oil went back to the engine. In fact I notice a small wet spot on the bottom bolt area of the crankcase vent that I installed new at the same time as this catch can.

@@Dnasty1 Maybe having the line coming from the separator to the can routed going down so oil wouldn't flow back might help?

Hey cool video! One question because i don't know. Why should you install an oil catch can?
@ZakiGarage
@ZakiGarage Жыл бұрын
Had it installed since the factory oil separator system lets lots of oil into the intake manifold. With time it causes engine issues and replacing the manifold costs thousands $$.

So what pipe goes where ? With the oil in and oil out ?
@ZakiGarage

So air flow is from the separator to the intake manifold. So the (IN) on the catch can goes to oil separator and (out) to manifold.

I think this is wrong way to install it here because this oil separator cover let air goes inside the engine so you have to install it on the oil separator ( front left head engine ) that the PCV valve and separate oil , if this locked the cover in the rear of the engine become make the air goes out to the elbow so the engine oil become burned.

What ist the benefit auf this System?
@ZakiGarage
@ZakiGarage Жыл бұрын
The PCV system on this engine is supposed to separate oil from going back into the intake manifold. Unfortunately, the PCV doesn't separate the oil well and lets oil into the intake manifold. Over time oil deposits in the manifold will make it fail eventually. The catch can is to prevent the oil from going into intake manifold.

Break your engine by adding constraints and overpressure on PCV. People like to add budget crap on their engines that do more harm than good!

But, this is High Velocity vent. Better idea is connect this can into the Low velocity vent. On the right head.

I don't recommend this assembly at all on a v6 and even less on a V8. Or use high quality gear with proper diameter hoses, not a budget oil catch can found on amazon around 25$ !! You're going from an id19 to an id10 diameter, which logically should worsen the PCV by a factor of almost 2 by increasing overpressure! And you're doing that on the high velocity vent!! Beware rpm's!!! Don't tamper with your vehicles with $20 fittings, do your maintenance properly. On a M272/273, you want to replace the 2 high and low velocity oil separators (drip pan for left side) every 50k miles or so, as well as the centrifuge on the left-hand side, to avoid any problems (mind the left hand thread). That's about a 100$ bill at most and a very easy DIY job. This kind of DIY is harmful! Especially as these engines use sequential rather than direct injection, yet another reason not to worry about clogged valves. As for maintaining the manifold, maintain your oil separators regularly and you'll never have to worry! The cost of replacing the intake manifold is lower than the possible damage caused by overpressure on the lower engine anyway Worth asking ken from mercedessource and check what would he think about such low budget addition on those engines ;)
