Catch More PUGET SOUND Resident Coho! Rigging Tips: Flashers, Dodgers, Spoons and Cut-Plugs

Puget Sound resident Coho is an excellent fishery, and in Marine Area 9 and 10 there is also opportunity for Chinook. Duane from Fish Hunt Northwest has the details that will get you success on these resident Coho salmon. A lot of these fish can be 3-5 pounds and excellent eating. Sometimes Duane even uses Kokanee rods - even when hooking into a 10lb chinook.
This is a much different rigging in terms of rod & line size for these fish as they are smaller than the Ocean-run coho. This is somewhat similar to a Kokanee fishery - as Duane likes to use dodgers. He does also run in-line flashers as well, including 360-flashers like the Brad's Revolutionary 360 flasher - especially the 8 inch ones. Mack's lure makes an 8-inch dodger that you can put a bend in that will really give a nice wobble to your bait. In 50 foot or shallower 8 inch works fantastic. Sling-blades are deadly too. Duane likes to put scent on the flashers themselves as well. Coho feed on krill as well as herring so those are excellent scent choices.
This fishery is often done with downriggers. The Brad's cut plug and kokanee cut plug are really good choices for lures, stuffed with Tuna or with Pautzke's fire gel. 32 inch leader behind a flasher, or 24 inches behind a dodger will give a nice action to those lures. Spoons (like Silver Horde or Kingfisher) in a 2inch size are excellent lures that imitate the size of the herring. Hoochie trailers on the spoons are a good attractant to use as well.

My Kokanee rods are really light. 4-8 lb line rating. Do you still think those are heavy enough? Also what leader length do you use when you run hoochies on a dodger or flasher? Do you shorten them up more than 24 or 36 inches because they have no action of their own? Also what hook size do you recommend? Thanks! Great info.

Hi Jesse, those rods are a bit light, in the event you encounter a Chinook. For the 3 to 5lb. Coho, they would be fun... Leader length typically 32" You can go down to 28" if you'd like.
