Catch up with our diabetic chimp, Bart and his keepers!

UPDATE ON BART
We put a ketone meter on our Amazon Wishlist recently, which has been kindly bought- thank you! We wanted to explain why items such as these, which regularly appear on our wishlist, are so important in helping keep our primates healthy. Here, Hannah, head of our chimp section, explains about Bart's diabetes, and how we manage it. We then join Hannah and Bart as she checks his blood glucose levels and gives him the appropriate amount of insulin. As always, our staff work with these guys in their back bedrooms where it is safest. You'll see Hannah managing the other chimps who are interested in whats going on, by regularly rewarding them with squash when they don't interfere with Bart's checks.

Gosh you've got him well trained to cooperate with the test and injection! Even with reward it must be hard to get him to volunteer for something that hurts a bit or at least isn't pleasant - yet he does! Well done you guys. Thanks for all you do for these animals.

I know people who don't act so well behaved when it comes to having injections. It really shows how much trust he has in his carers.

I adopted Bart from his birth for 9-10 years and it was so nice to see him when he was just a young chimp and be kept so up to date on his health etc from Monkey World. To see him now as the dominant male of the group and so well disciplined both towards his fellow chimps and towards the carers, it's amazing. You all do such amazing work with these animals!

I was wondering how they tested and administered insulin. I'm amazed that the chimp cooperates. Do they have a higher tolerance for pain and do not feel it the way humans do?

Chimps are very tough- but all wld animals will hide pain & weakness too as they can't afford to be seen as weak in the wild. We work hard to make sure Bart knows he gets a treat for cooperating with this- he is such a superstar.
