During the 27 years I worked baseball the hardest catcher to work with was the one that moved around all of the time. I had a rule that if I couldn't see the end of a pitch (when it came over the plate) the pitch was a ball. This quickly convinced the catcher not to jump up nd block my line of sight unless they ad to and then it was always a high ball and not a strike. I noted that I just had to concentrate harder on the low pitches to see them.

Question for you then- did you find the "sway" technique of receiving the pitches (to catch the ball within the frame of one's torso, as opposed to simply reaching for the ball) to be annoying, or are you referring to something more pronounced than that movement?

this video should be required viewing for every youth catcher up through high school. I say this as an umpire who wishes more catchers knew what they're doing; it's amazing how often catchers just completely butcher pitches that could have been strikes... kid, I'm here to call strikes, but I just can't after you did THAT to it. they stab at pitches in the black and carry them out of the zone; they shove low pitches into the dirt; they let curveballs get deep and catch them in between their legs; they catch pitches right on the edge of the zone and then move their glove to the middle of the zone and ask why it wasn't a strike ("you didn't think it looked like a strike where you caught it, so why should I?") 100% agree MJH-Baseball, I hate the term "framing", or at least I hate what many catchers and coaches _think_ "framing" means. I even see ugly framing by MLB catchers sometimes now.

Also the best catchers I had would keep the coaches off my back because of the close ones. You can not concentrate as well with a coach yelling at you all of the time.

At 2:14 he shows a clip from the YT channel "Baseball by the Yard". If you haven't checked out that channel you should. Lots of great tips for higher levels of play, but some of them can be used for the lower levels. Both this channel and that one are excellent.

I’ve never felt that a catcher could make a ball look like a strike but they surely can make a strike look like a ball to an umpire.

That stupid "strike box" thats super-imposed on the hitter is a SQUARE! The strike zone is a rectangle. A tall batter has that box at his belt line sometimes.

Youth catchers are either way too close or way to far away.

Framing should be illegal . I cant believe umps fall for it .
