Catching a Daytime Surface Swordfish on live bait! - The rarest catch in the world

Season Two: Episode 4 | Hunting Surface Swords Part I
In between world tour destinations the team takes a quick break to return to one of their favorite local SoCal fisheries, the illusive surface swordfish. It’s been nearly 4 years since Anthony Hsieh and the BadCo team successfully landed a surface swordfish casting a live bait on stand up conventional tackle. With word going around about local sightings, the team prepares their newly refitted 92 Jones Goodell for a 5 day trip at some of the outer islands. It’s been nearly 2 years since anyone has fished the vessel, as it’s been in the yard for over 18 months.

What an amazing catch. You could tell it was a very meaningful catch. We see swordfish on the surface from time to time in south FL off Ft. Lauderdale. It is a rare occurrence but they do come up from time to time and i have even seen them free jumping.

What an excellent video production !!! Not been an expert angler this was one of the best videos Ive ever seen . Been so close to Anthony and watching him as he changed bait , maybe even rods , running up and down , side to side , made me feel like I was chasing the sword , jajajaja . Every time he casted the bait , I would feel that ir was short , or long , or to a side …….. I felt as if I was the one fishing jaja Congrats , that was a bad , brutal , fishing session Made my day . There’s nothing like a surface swordfish bite. We’ve seen many here in so cal, one time the fish had to be close to 700 pounds, giant. And we threw a big live mackerel perfectly in front of it. It swam so fast and grabbed the bait and took off faster than any fish ive ever seen. We set the hook and hooked him for a minute and he popped off

Foul hooked, wow what a fish! To me it looked like the bait was behind the fish on the hookup, maybe tangled on the line or maybe the bait slid up the line once hooked. Can you harpoon a line caught fish in California?

I fortunately have landed a 100 pound sword on slow pitch jigging gear. It was an epic fight. In the Northeast, we normally jig at night, and deep drop 1000 ft + in the day. Planning to go to Catalina island for deep drop, and hopefully get a sword bite. Any advice ?

Why not use the drone to drop the baits IFO the sword, they do it off the beaches in Florida and Australia to get their baits out a couple hundred yards off shore

We were there in 2019 with the 144 Trinity and the Viking 60, then Covid shut us down. No plan as of now to get back there for the next few years.
