A friend has been having some problems with his horses. He needs to transport all 3 horses to a new pasture but cannot catch one of the mares. I head over to help him out and give the mare a lesson on how to be caught using pressure and release techniques.

Some of my "friends" on Face Book should watch this. I spent nearly one hour trying to catch a little mare. I used the same method and she came up to me and allowed me to catch the "impossible catch". They all laughed at me but it worked. Their problem was that each time they caught her, they saddled up and did a lot of jumping in the school. Pony said stuff that....I'm off. I told them just take her in, water, feed and groom then turn her back out. If you work her like crazy each time she's caught ... of course you'll have problems.

It’s quite a workout, if they’re in a big pasture. And mares can be so resistant. I once did the same thing with my mare only I did it on my atv. By the time she ran into the corral she was out of air, but she let me approach her on foot forevermore afterwards. Kudos for sticking with it!

Neat trick with the inner tube! I can’t recall how many halters I saw broken from horses pulling back. We had a heavy duty hitching rail and I saw my dad make up a 1.5” rope to put around their necks that would clip to a ring woven into the rope and not tighten around their necks. They could really haul back on that without breaking anything and tired of it quickly. The inner tube seems a little more efficient!! I really enjoy your content!

Just an observation on tying your rope halter. If you tie the knot below the loop, and the house pulls back, you can loosen the knot by simply pushing up on the top of the loop. Whereas, if you tie the knot above the loop, as it looks like you have, you might need to cut the halter because the knot will be too tight to loosen by hand.

I absolutely love the way you train horses. I am 80 years old and way back way back trainers used a rubber hose and used to hit the force between the eyes sometimes even knocking them out so, your loving way is the only way you have a wonderfully reassuring voice too! You always give them a reward by saying good girl, in the proper voice or good buddy. You are also right and teaching people that horses are a lot smarter than their given credit for! God bless you, and I have been watching you diligently for several months now, and have nothing but admiration for your methods! Horses have always been my passion, and they still are. I so wish I could continue to ride. they are number one on my bucket list

I was trying to catch my sisters twitty horse, round and round we went till I got so frustrated I threw the halter at her and yelled “go on then you black b&#$@, run now!!” Dreadful I know and totally unhelpful. 🥴 I actually laughed out loud watching this video because it sounded so funny “yah yah yah, clap clap tsk tsk, oh good girl “ lol. I don’t usually comment, but in this case I half to. I can’t tell you how many vines I’ve watched that either tell how to catch a horse that’s is already willing to be caught or already in a lead and halter. Thank you for sharing the real deal with us. I think we can all relate to the huffing and puffing. ;-) I do have a question though, what do you do when there is a herd out there and the drive your horse away?
@homesteadhorsemanship
@homesteadhorsemanship 2 жыл бұрын
Push them away from the herd. Doesn’t have to be far either they will circle the group, you cut through and just keep doing the we technique pushing them out on on there own on the perimeter of the herd. Be prepared for help. Other horses will pick up on there nervous energy and not like them acting like that and will run out and bit their hip and circle them out of the herd Sam as you. When your object horse stops and squares up pet it’s forehead and turn and walk off.

I have a very similar approach when trying to catch a difficult horse. As you say, timing is everything!The only things I do differently is I dont tend to make any noise, just wave n bang my arms againts my legs and whenever I go to approach them, I walk in a large arc around them n wait for them to take a step towards me. But good job..well done! A nice bit of exercise for the day 😅

My dad, started working around horses at the age of 3, in his dads stable. He was born in 1912. He could do anything with a horse or a dog. He never kept a halter on a horse in a enclosed area. Said that he never had a hard time catching a horse with oats or Omalene in a milk bucket. He could catch a horse by name and call his horses to him, out of a herd. Rather it was a herd of Elk or a herd of wild horses, his horses were always in his back pocket. He's been gone now since 1981, his horses all with him in heaven. Losing all of them is still a big grizzly loss for me and I've not been able to ever touch a horse since. It's still to raw.
