I agree with you in most cases. However, Amherst, NY had the distinction of being named the "Safest City" in America for several years. I know this because they constantly used it to promote themselves during the 90s. Not sure what the criteria was or what organization chose them, though.

willshedo ~ ain't it though??? That's so funny you said that because I thought the same exact thing! Not only that but I was born and raised in Buffalo NY and spent MUCH of my youth on those trails and parks. Most of them are filthy and none of them have ever been safe! Especially between Niagara Falls and East Aurora. And the inner city trails are full of homeless Ppl and drug addicts! This guy was far from the only criminal who frequently preyed on ppl utilizing those paths and parks! When I was a teenager 2 very young neighborhood girls were raped and murdered on the West side where I lived, one on the bike path down near the international train bridge and the other near the psych center... while the bike path rapist was at large and in addition to his victims. That's only as far as I can recall too! I'm sure there were more. I moved out of Buffalo for my children's sakes when the crack dealing hooker who moved in across the street got herself shot in the face. I still have friends throughout the city... it has only gotten worse since I left 16 yrs ago!

I am from Buffalo and when I was in college Captain Nigrelli came to our Criminology class and told us all about the case. It was fascinating. I believe that this case made him a Captain in the New York State Police, colloquially known as "state troopers." Also, I have to agree with the voiceover about how Buffalo is such a tight knit community. Most people never leave the greater metro area and have no plans to ever do so. Even though Buffalo is a city, it most definitely feels like a small town and has been voted an "All American City" several times. Everyone always remarks about how friendly Buffalonians are, and if given the chance, one should certainly visit...in the summer, lol.

Very good documentary. However, I have to laugh at the State Police spokesman saying they knew Sanchez was back as soon as they saw the double ligature marks on Joan Diver's body. After her body was found, the husband became the chief suspect. The police leaked to the media that he had "lawyered up" and that a coworker had reported him acting strange that day. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when DNA found on the car's ignition came back matching Sanchez that the police knew he was back. If that drop of sweat wasn't found, I'll bet the husband would be sitting in jail as we speak , based on flimsy, circumstantial evidence. In fact, another man (Anthony Capozzi) was wrongfully convicted of several of Sanchez' earlier rapes and spent many years in jail based solely on eyewitness accounts. For the police spokesman to ignore this and pretend that they knew Sanchez was back when they discovered the body, is disingenuous and an outright lie. Nothing like rewriting history to paint yourself in a more flattering light.

I get tired of hearing these sob stories about murderers who had a rough childhood, don't give these psychopaths any excuses, we all have choices. In the case of abused children, having just ONE trusted person- whether it be a teacher, a friend, the kind old lady at the grocery store, whatever- is enough to trigger normal emotional connection. In the case they are serially abused, not just by their parents, but by society, they don't turn out okay. So learning from them is essential. If we can reteach society to parent properly and with emotional connection then there's a high chance these things won't happen. In the case of psychopaths with physical brain issues there isn't much to be done.

Instead of grooming one victim the monster groomed the whole community. Think about it for a minute, if he was more introverted and less active in the community it would make him, sanchez look suspicious as it would any monster or perp. Instead, he blanketed the community with kindness with the actions of coaching, doing favors for his neighbors and friends. Being a good employee and active in church. This behaviors reflect the suspicions away from him, which is exactly what he wanted. He was caught due to DNA and by the identification of the victim .

When were you there? I was living in the Richmond Residence Hall as a transfer student in the junior year in 1993 and I heard about the unsolved murder case of Linda Gollum at that time. (I actually don't know the name, and people just knew that was a student but without a name attached, at that time.)

Please make no mistake, i.e. @ 29:18, this prisoner/rapist who says it's really about "power" and that it's not about sex...he's lying. It's about sex and perversion first and foremost. Any other reason after can be about "power." But ladies, again, make no mistake, males who do this are devious perverts. Due to the shame of being perverted, males in society, media, law enforcement tend to make it about all power and "self esteem." Bull SH--.
@saomychau7010 Жыл бұрын
I believe that sex and perversion is the first and foremost drive for serial rapists, the basic drive due to biology and the lack of brain control over those functions. So, there must be some problems with their brains and the sick development somewhere that caused them to think that they can be 'above' the laws, and also allowed them to avoid being captured and thus escaped 'justice'. The criminals thought they are (were) superior to the controlling authorities in the region, city, and others, and so they can blend into society and basically 'hiding in plain sight' until advances are achieved in forensic science, combined with better DNA research and analysis that brought the accuse out to face justice.

Killers and rapists come in all shapes and forms.. Yes some are strange kids who torture animals like the stereotype we are led to believe but others are what you would consider the good pals...the workmates you have a laugh with (whether male or female), the partners you sleep with, the emergency staff that help you . Killers are getting younger too and whether this is down to the digital age who knows? All I can say is that I'd hate to put my neck on the line as a profiler these days because it is so hard to define a murderer, especially as anger seems to be everywhere. Thank goodness for DNA
@user-yp3oj5se1i2 жыл бұрын
No they don't. Killers and rapists come in the killing and raping form. And it's the men or women You have sex with. Speak for yourself. Don't be ashamed about it and say "sleep with" if you really can't stop wanting to have sex with many different people, sleeping with them is not what you want. Defining a murderer is easy. Look at the dictionary definition.

And left her to rot. Her name was Kimberly leach I think??.and he even tried to delay his execution. By making Or trying to make.a deal With the governor. If the governor gives him 4 more years. He is going to show the police. Where he left them to rot animals eating them long time ago. He hunt them Rape them and kill them. And he said to his wife call all the mothers to call the governor. So they can delay his execution. Not 1 mother called.and he tried the FBI Calling them. Asking for their help?? And in return he is going to teach them. About serial killer's. Regarding the Joan Diver killing - That one happened right down the street from where I live. It was right after I graduated high school and I was working in a pizzeria about 2.5 miles away, so I would ride my bike to work everyday taking the bike path. On the way home I came up to my street and the section of bike path on the other side was closed off with dozens of police vehicles there. I thought it was strange and was wondering what had happened, only to find out on the news a day or two later.

In 1994 I worked at a business on Military Road in Buffalo New York, adjacent to the Conrail railroad tracks. One afternoon, a middle aged man walked in, and asked if he could walk through our yard, and go up near the tracks. He was soft spoken, and polite, seemed nice. We let him go out to the yard. He came back a short time later, introduced himself as Tim. He left, and came back a few days later, and walked up to the tracks again. I told him we would be closing soon, and he said he'd walk down the trail down Chandler Street where he was parked. That next day a rape occurred up along the tracks. It really bothered me, but I never gave it a second thought regardless. A few years later when the Son of a Bitch was caught, my damned heart nearly blew out of chest. The State had more than enough evidence for an indictment, and conviction against Altemio Sanchez to put him away forever. As a result, my guard is ALWAYS up now!

In my opinion, 'people' like this guy need not be executed. Their punishment should be to be imprisoned and exhaustively tested on for the rest of their lives, to work out what makes them tick, in order to help spot future killers.

And their victims families should continue to be victimised by paying the taxes that ultimately keep them alive and in good health? Serial murderers and rapists have been studied relentlessly and yet we're no nearer to preventing these crimes than we are any other crimes. It's just my opinion but there is no cure all for sexual murder and therefore keeping them alive at the taxpayers expense is pointless.

Ive studied and listened to numerous stories about all those popular serial killers and i dont agree that they can lay the blame on their parents and up bringing to lead them to kill as they do.
@Skindoggiedog6 жыл бұрын
Ernest, nobody is saying that's the only cause, but that it does usually play a role. The three main facets are Psychopathy, Sexual Sadism and Childhood Abuse. Serial killers usually have at least two of the three. If they have all three, their chances of killing people is much, much higher. The other popular idiom is that "Well I suffered abuse as a child and I didn't end up killing people!" Which completely ignores the fact that different people (and personality types) react to the very *same* circumstances in very *different* ways. We know for a fact that experiences as children can, and do, persist throughout people's lives.

Curiously though Idk if it was due to timing of the program or possibly legal issues, but Anthony Caposi's name is mysteriously absent from this presentation. For everyone that was not familiar with the case or from Buffalo and its suburbs, he was an innocent man that spent years in prison because he was falsely identified by the Buffalo P.D as being the Bike Path rapist. Buffalo police god bless um but they really dropped the ball on that one and Caposi actually was released after Sanchez was i.d'd as the confirmed criminal and also received the required compensation. Also I remember there was a series of events that put the nail in the coffin for Sanchez but like I said maybe not enough time in the program... But my friend managed this restaurant in Williamsville N.Y at the time called Sole, and Sanchez had dinner there with his wife and the F.B.I I believe told the staff ahead of time not to touch anything and collected his DNA from his food plate or utensils? I can't remember exactly or if that is where he was arrested idk but that restaurant Sole played a huge role in catching him either way. But barring those two things this was the best program I have seen regarding the crimes. Thx for posting.

Is this documentary really glossing over the fact that a man was wrongly imprisoned for the Bike Path Rapist crimes until DNA exonerated him and pointed towards Altemio Sanchez? That is something that cannot be skipped over in the story of these crimes. An innocent man and apparently, a very decent man was imprisoned for all these crimes. He is a victim of Sanchez too. And certainly, his family was. Apparently his mother especially was torn apart over his imprisonment.

I disagree with the role model comment, “You look at your parents as roles models, so if you see them doing it you are going to end up doing a similar thing”. 100% WRONG, I am nothing like the abusive parent, I’ve strived to better myself with no support or help and do not posess any of the characteristics she had as I’ve fought hard to be her complete opposite so that comment is actual bullshit. As Jason Merrill said below, a lot of people have rough childhoods, that doesn’t mean we get to kill people. Or, even want to kill people. The abuse factor has always been an excuse for serial killers/rapists/paeophiles/other criminals and it needs to stop, the statistics alone would show there are far more of us abuse survivors who have ensured our lives don’t match that of our parents and have never been in trouble with the law. Some of us even work in law enforcement, the military or, like me in the medical field. I’m studying to become a Forensic Psychologist.

Not everyone is as strong as you, but I agree it's not an excuse.

Nicole E now your stretching it. It’s not 100% wrong. It happens a lot . Kids do what there parents do most of the time

Maybe you say this because you want to make sure nobody suspects you being a serial killer?

And the ones that had a good life, good parents?

I admire you for striving to be completely different, in a very positive way to your mum but, you often find one bad apple in a family of 3,4 or 5 kids and the rest are great people. It seems that children with bad parents go one way or another. It also seems religion plays a major part and also problems at birth. Lots of factors, not just one. Good luck with your studies and your career :)

I was abused horribly as a child. I went through my serial killer phase, and now I am a normal law abiding citizen.

i was born in the 80s in Buffalo and vividly remember this case. It scared and shocked the whole area. I wish they had discussed the interesting way that they obtained his dna to compare to the murders.
@danoshierproductions Жыл бұрын
That was a remarkable set up they pulled off to get his DNA at the restaurant. I met a few of the officers that played bus boys and waiters for it.

Hi, Dan, well done documentary. lived in wny-(and still do)-when he-Sanchez was committing his attacks/murders. I was afraid to walk anywhere on any bike/jogging path alone. Everyone was glad/relieved, he was caught. I knew a girl who was a friend of one of his victims-Joan. My husband was brought up in Kenmore, NY-a suburb of Buffalo, his parents lived there. NO one ever suspected him-Sanchez! This man had it all-really. He had control-kids, marriage, work, etc; so why? Sanchez had more than many of his nationalty in Buffalo. He was liked and respected-so i don't get it-why do this-murder? If dna hadn't nailed him-i would like to ask him--would he have gone on-and on with assaults/rapes/murders, until caught-if ever?
@Skindoggiedog6 жыл бұрын
Why? Because he liked it. He liked to do it. It was something he really enjoyed. Often the murder is just something you have to do, in order to try to avoid capture. Sometimes it's because the power that killing gives you also gets you hard. Bottom-line: Because he liked it.
@sistershane1006 жыл бұрын
agree Skindoggoedog-sometimes it's just the power and control-over another human life..is the excitment of it to a sick mind..Yet-this man had it all-even respect in community and work..

Thank you for watching and commenting. It was always a cloud over the community until he was caught. Very remarkable story all around!

It was a very scary time. My daughter was a student at UB then. We ran in the Yalem memorial races. In '96 my husband thinks Sanchez would have been close to him as their times were similar.

My mother was an alcoholic and she said to me I didn't want a girl (only girl and three boys) She said I hoped you choked on the birth canal. Thank GOD grew up needing therapy, however, I didn't grow up to want to hurt others. Their past isn't a good reason why they turn into what they turn into. That is a choice, a personal choice.
