@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman11 жыл бұрын
sadly i have never fished in the red sea, i used to fishing in scotland from a boat over reefs covere with a thick weed called kelp. On e of the main reasons i started tying my ow feather rigs was because i was loosing so many of the bought ones and the weights. What worked for me was using a smooth weight with a flat bottom almost like the the one in my weight making video. I found weights with pointed ends more easily find there way into gaps and get stuck also rather than taper fully cont.

rather than tapering all the way to the base which is more likely to become wedged a small taper then a cylinder seems to snag less. With the feather rigs i found if i lengthened the distance between the weight and the first branch above from 300mm or less (on shop bought rigs) too 450mm i lost far fewer rigs. That extra bit of line meant i went from loosing 2-3 rigs per trip to having one rig on rod for fifteen trips. I also never use a swivel to connect to the weight cont...

I realized after i had finished the video i never mentioned bleeding. I generally snap the necks of mackerel and that normally severs the joint and the arteries below the gills and they bleed out. Commercially Atlantic mackerel are not bled they are chilled which and so i am led to believe the blood is draw from the muscle to the organs as survival measure. Cheers
@Davestone80311 жыл бұрын
Love your videos, thank-you. One of my favorite parts of fishing is making my own gear to catch, you have that part down, well done. My wife prefers the fish that are not so fishy tasteing, so when catching mack's or blues, I bleed them. Cut through the gills before dropping them into the cooler, it seems to cut down on the oily-ness. I do not really mind the extra flavor, :). I am in the USA, no pebble beaches. If I wash anything in the suds, it would be covered with a lot of sand. Thanks

The reason I do not just use 20lb line straight through is 10lb helps me cast further as it is thinner and offer less resistance to the rod eyes. If you are casting large weights say 6oz you can use 60lb rig/shock leader and then something like 15-18lb reel line, with the right rod and technique this can produce incredible distances.

It is a couple of hundred miles from where i live. I fished there in the summer with mackerel feathers, when the mackerel shoals pass close to the beach as the gravel slopes away quickly to give a good depth of water close in. It is a very popular beach fishing location at other times of year as a big range of fish tend pass by, mainly bottom feeders which require bait methods.

***** i have never really measured how far i cast, but while making this video, i was fishing with a friend and someone who was fishing for the first time their casts were obvously not very far a yet they still caught. Time of year wise i would say late June through to October, the best times i found were very early morning not long after sunrise and early evening to darkness, the fish tend to come far closer, if you can get a high tide at these times you are into gold. In saying that i fished in the middle of the day, in the middle of heat wave and still managed to pull a couple out but they can be few far between. good luck

Great videos Paul. We go fishing in the red sea and of course there are lots of reefs in the bottom and that is why the sinker once touches the reef below, it gets stuck. Not everytime, but as the boat moves left and right, sometimes it gets stuck! Any idea how to make a sinker that is creative enough to avoid getting stuck!!!! I know it is a stupid question it seems, but that is a very annoying issue for us anglers and we have to be very very sensitive everytime we through the line.

The swivel is tied to a piece of shock leader rated a 20lb bs this is monofilament fishing line, some companies make a particular type of monofilament called shock leader for this purpose. I use two rod lengths as the measure of the length of my shock leader; this means when I wind up to cast the shock leader is wound round my reel half a dozen times. The shock leader is then tied to my main line which is 10lb (4.5kg) using an Albright knot which is strong but also neat and slim for casting.
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman11 жыл бұрын
For 2oz (60g) of weight everything between the weight and the reel requires a minimum breaking strain of 20lb (9kg), as a rule of thumb every 1oz (30g) of cast weight requires 10lb (4.5kg) of breaking strain; so 1oz requires 10lb bs, 2oz requires 20lb, 3oz requires 30lb, and so on. So my setup in the vid starts with a 2oz (60g) weight, the rig is looped in and the main line on the rig is 30lb (13.5kg) so above the 20lb. The rig is looped into a swivel also rated above 20lb. cont.

Luckily we still have reasonable stocks over here but I guess that can change rapidly. I am kind of always conscious when taking wild fish for food that although it may be free after the cost of the tackle it feelsa bit like a privilege and that means I have duty to maybe honor that by not wasting or abusing it. If only we could catch mackerel on Barts, that would be something to see. cheers Cheers

How far do you have to cast for Mackerel? I cant seem to be getting any with the distance i am casting. I always use flies and i have a Shakespeare beta 20 pound baitcaster reel. I usually use a 6oz weight with it.
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman10 жыл бұрын
I am using a short rod with a 2oz weight so i do not think i am casting any great distance. I think the beta is a boat reel with a level wind which will increase drag on the cast especially if you are using a rod designed for a fixed spool reel and its retrieve speed may keep a heavy 6oz weight on the bottom meaning the feathers are kicking up sand rather than dancing up and down but i could be wrong. I am not one for feather fishing with big weights i am far too lazy to put that much effort in and to be honest i have yet to see anyone benefit from that approach. The friend i was fishing with when i made this vid had a big 13ft rod a large reel and 6oz weights after two days of nearly killing himself with it, we went tackle shop and bought 10ft 2oz spinning kit and he never looked back. The other possibility is that it is a little early yet for the big shoals to come in. One of the biggest things that improved my casting was watching youtube videos on the subject, i would say the off the ground cast put about third more distance on my casts and following basic advice like filling spools and using lighter lines a and shock leader made far more difference to the distance i could get than using larger weights and bigger rods. I used to fish from the rocks in scotland on the inside of a reef and pick off the pollock, after using the off the ground cast i was getting a way over the other side of the reef into deeper water a pulling a lot more fish in. With that said if i ever get the chance i would love to book an hour or so with a casting instructor, good luck

Hay Paul, do you know why sometimes when I cast my line just snaps? is my line too weak for the weight or am I trying to throw it too far? In your video you have a ´shock leaver´ attached to your line, what is the purpose of this?
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman11 жыл бұрын
When you cast a weight you can generate a lot of force just before releasing the line. So everything between the weight and reel needs to be able to deal with that force. Rods are normally supplied these days with the recommended weight it will cast printed on the rod so mine casts between 10 - 40g, in the vid I go a little higher and use 60g (2oz) lead mainly because they do not sell 1 1/2oz (40g) weights in the shop. cont.....

@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman11 жыл бұрын
try john holden, his youtube channel has a lot of pendulum cast videos and links to information. Cheers
@davemakesawave11 жыл бұрын
A shock leader is one way to deal with this but another is to use 30lb braided line which may sound very heavy but it's extremely thin, casts a long way and eliminates a bulky shock leader knot. Another advantage with braid is it doesn't stretch so you feel connected to your end gear all the time and can detect the smallest of bites. Downside is the cost but there are bargains on eBay and it will last for a few years.
@quiouix10 жыл бұрын
Using shock leaders with feathered rigs confuses me. Should we select the breaking strain of the rig body same as the shock leader? If we do so wouldn't it be too thick?
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman10 жыл бұрын
The shock leader i use is the same breaking strain as the rig main line, if i did not use a shock leader the weight would snap the reel line on the cast above the rig. Thanks
@richardheasman61136 жыл бұрын
Its generally accepted that the shock leader strength in pounds should be ten times the amount of the lead weight your planning on using in ounces. So if you plan to fish with a 2oz lead weight, your leader should be minimum 20lb. If you up the lead to 3oz, then your leader should be 30lb. The leader needs to be long enough to go round the spool three full turns when casting - because then you can be sure its the leader that takes the strain on the cast and not the generally weaker main line. That way you're fishing safely :)
@richardheasman61136 жыл бұрын
I love all your vids btw - you have inspired me to make a few bass lures and I caught my first fish on a home made pencil lure earlier this month - a small jack pike - but they all count. Brilliant video paul, question..I use a longer rod for spinning chesil, is 9ft long enough? They look so small compared to a good old beach caster, and 2 0z weight sounds small, obviously it works..I just wanted your option before I buy a new one..Thanks mate
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman10 жыл бұрын
Simon Bohin I think this is a personal choice , when i have been down there i see guys using up to 16ft beach casters throwing 6oz weights and for all they tell me i have never seen any of them catching anymore fish or cast huge distances but I know they are using a lot more effort but if they are happy that is great. I fished with a friend and his beach caster was killing him so we went and bought him a 9ft 2-3oz kit and he caught far more on it because he could cast comfortably. For me the nine foot outfit works but it is a rod i use for lure fishing in fresh water and have caught hundreds of pike on. Another set up i use is 3.5lb 12ft carp rod this throws 3oz weights with easy but it is light enough in the hand takes not much effort to cast and retrieve. I used this set up in Scotland to take some big Pollock of the rocks with feathers. I would say the thing that put more distance on my fishing was watching casting videos to pick up technique not a new rod, but the most important thing for me when i am casting is to feel comfortable because i know i will fish longer and my lures will spend more time in the water. Chesil beach is also unusual because it is very deep close in and also the tide races along it so fish are going to get funneled in closer to the shore than on a longer sloping beech. I watched shoals of white bait pursued by mackerel flopping on the gravel they came that close in. I am not sure if this helps or confuses.
@simonb243010 жыл бұрын
Brilliant Paul..Thanks for your comments and advise that's a great help, think I may go down as I find my 14 ft rod kills my back,brilliant for bottom fishing on the tripod but not so good for spinning. Thanks again simon

What i would do is look on the webb for a chart of where I am staying and look for deep point touching the coast. I used this maps.nls.uk/coasts/admiralty_charts_list.html whihc are old charts but give depths and I picked out some great spots, I found a spot where i could cast into 40ft of water close in. Good luck

Hi, I really want to do this off the Essex Coast, is it possible. Is your rod a beach caster? I have never really fished before
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman10 жыл бұрын
i am just using a spinning outfit rather than a beach caster, Chesil beach is great for fishing beacuse it slopes steeply away almost like fishing off rocks. I have never fished on the Essex coast but i am sure you can find some information on good beachs or marks from sea fishing forums or the tackle shop, good luck

Paul thats cool, just too cool mate. You know that...? Say, did you also make your own 3-rig feather trace? (In your opinion, which works best, coffe packet rig or this one? Fishing is so exciting, my grandfather was a hunter and a real hardcore fisherman in his day, he sewed his own cast nets, melted his own weights, made hooks etc. Being from Brazil, I know it's in my blood. However Paul I am just now getting started Saltwater fishing, I wanted to conquer fresh water all the way and fully grasp all aspects of freshwater, plugs, lures, jigs, rigging, knots, even including fly fishing and the various fish tactics such as carp, catfish, bass... etc, before ever moving to saltwater. My mistake, why not do both...!? And why go for fish I can't eat or keep, due to mercury or bony carps... right? So Paul help me out a bit mate I'm living in the S.W. Florida Marco Island area, what are some good links/videos you would recommend for a fearless eager saltwater beach fisherman looking for some real fish? (boat-less mate hehe) All Regards to you my friend, you are a honor to watch I take my hat off to you. Thanks for you time and dedication, on these videos. And your fisherman patience! - AJ
