Thank you Paul.. I'm in California (Monterey Bay Area) and have caught TONS of Mackerel jigging off the piers and wharfs. I followed your tutorial, but used a red color size 6 hooks, cut the ribbon in half lengthwise to make it thinner (to account for the smaller hooks), added some red ribbon, put 5 hooks to a rig, and added a glow in the dark bead on the snood. These lures are AWESOME. I can catch Mackerel and White Croaker without bait and I out fish everybody else, even those using bait and fishing right next to me. There using store bought sabikis and adding small pieces of shrimp. Thank you for all your great tutorials and for enhancing my love and experience of fishing!

Cannery Row set in Monterey Bay is one of my favourite books. I remeber when i used to think that store bought rigs must be the best, but that was a long time ago. I think the advanatge of making my own tackle is that willingness to learn and spend that extra time thinking about how a knew peice of tackle works on the peir rather than just buying something and tying it on. Good luck, say hello to Doc

Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

I made these lures based on Mr. Adams' instructions, I tried them on gulf coast here in florida. The problem I had was how to stop, had 15 Spanish mackerels and cooked them in olive oil, my wife was very happy. Thanks Paul. More power to your videos an creativity.

I am glad you found the vid easy to follow, I tested the rigs when I lived on the island of mull and fished amongst the rocky, kelpy shores and reefs. What makes the biggest difference to the rig is that slightly longer bottom section that often keeps the lowest hooks just out of the weed. As for Drummore all I can say is you lucky man, and if I am ever up that way you can be sure I will give you call.

just wanted to thank you paul I made these for this last weekend and they worked great. I caught more fish on these lures than I did my jig also I caught more than one at a time totally worth trying. Mine didnt hold up to long I bought most of my stuff from the dollar tree the ribbon didnt last however it was so cheap and well worth the time. I super glued my ribbon together because only one side had the holographic image.

the only trouble with humbrol model or enamel paint is it is a bit thin and would probably just soak in to the knot on the lure. Household paint like emulsion is acrylic but i have used thick gloss paint, liquid paper and permanent maker for the pupils before today and they all lasted. Normally i apply the eye spots with panel pins or tack heads instead of a brush. Good luck

Hi Paul, these are great lures. When I'm assembling mine I reverse the direction they're tied to the main line so that they are held away from the line by the stiffness of the snood. Gravity holds the hooks pointing down still. It just gives a more open display. Regards, Peter.

what a great video thanks for making this and sharing with us... and of course this makes fishing affordable. especially for young boys with not a lot of money. As a lad my pals and I would fish for Mackerel (spinning rods not floats) off the rocks of East Anglesey at White Beach. we would use seagull feathers. and sometimes use the silver paper from cigarette packs. with up to 6 hooks... nothing like the thrill of 3 or 4 mackerel taking the lure at the same time. around dinner time I would go around the houses and offer my catch for sale... I charged 1/- a fish or 3 for half a crown... I would keep the fish alive to show my customers that they were fresh... as an aside shop bought spinners cost 10 pence (old money) so you can see the attraction of being able to make your own feather lures again, thanks for sharing. I like that you ended your vid by a your guys in the boat teaching your grandson? how to do it. wonderful

so you should know that out about 50 yards on the east side of the bay (white beach is a small bay about 300 yards across) is sand.. I know this because you can catch flat fish.. we used sea worms for them.. or mussel meat.. there are also plenty of dog fish and occasionally bass.. on the other side of the bay (walk through the old quarry works) there are large rocks which at low tide snag you up... so we would spin high up to avoid the snags then on particular low tides we would venture down into amongst the rocks and retrieve all the spinners etc that had been snagged on the rocks. finally keep a sharp look out for gold coins from the Royal Charter wreck of 1859.. which still turn up... if you go to white beach please film... I live in St Louis USA and would love to see some fishing from the ricks... thanks :-)

you could do. you would just have to use a standard whipping or snell knot, it can be a bit harder but once you've got through a few thousand of your hooks you will be an expert.

I make rigs sort of the same way for Bluegills,Crappie, etc. here in the states. But I don't use a loop knot to attach it to the swivel or swivel to main, they're both clinch knots as I don't care much for those loop knots and I don't add the swivel to the rig,it's always attached to my main and I just pull out the rig and clinch it to the swivel.Less that needs to go into the ziploc as I don't usually lose the swivel either as my main is #10 and the rig is either #4-6-8 for those fish. There is another way it could probably done but I haven't tried it.Tie 1.5-2" (38-50mm) long dropper loops along the length of your line, cinch tight then cut the one end of loop and it'll give you a tag length 2x the loop length.Snell that to your lure.

Thank you for instructional video. I’d like to say that these really work well. The only thing I would change is the color of the ribbon. I used these for the first time out in cape Cod bay in April earlier this year and I made them with 2 different color ribbons. I gave my friend the one that had the gold colored ribbon and he definitely outfished me with it. I was fishing with the silver holographic ribbon sabiki and doing really well but the fish really wanted the gold color

I lived on al ittle island off Mull for about five years a spent a lot time fishing from a small boat and the shore. Just going through my old log i was still catching around easter but any quantity or large fish, mainly coleys and pollock on feather from a boat. Shore wise where i lived there was no real depth of water to cast into you are talking 5mtrs at the most, so on the top of high tides i fishes one spot with feather rig the same as in the chesil beach video this was a reef and i could pull a few collies off it. The other method i used when i wanted to just go enjoy myself was lrf fishing, i made my lures from bit rubbish, ealstic bands and stuff, but just before eveing a lot small fish come into shelter and i would often great laugh picking off tiny fish. I think to feather fish at that time of year from shore the most important thing i would look for is depth of water close in (6m-10m plus) and some kind of reef. If you can't find that then maybe a bit of lrf fishing in amongst the kelp of a jetty of pier. I would buy one of those Ecogear lrf kits and getting the lightest rod out. I am really sorry that when i lived up there i did not spend more time on the old lrf. Or make up some tiny size 8 hook sabiki rigs and use a very small drop shot weight. If you are going over to Tobemorry ask in the tackle shop. Good luck

we broke their necks as soon as we unhooked them, you can see their mouths are agape, i put my finger in the mouth and thumb behind the head and pull back sharply this breaks their spinal and kills them, mackerel can twitch for a very long time after they are dead, i have removed heads from mackerel and they will still spasm even after a couple of hours of being headless, the Pollock and collie get a bump on the head and then are bled

there is no reason why this could not be used as a Patterson rig without the hook dressing. I wonder if it might be better with a different hook knot to make it easy to slide bait onto the hook such as worms.

The loop on the bottom lopps into a weight and the top loop or sivel is tied to the main line back to the rod and reel, if they are being cast rather than dropped from a boat a shock will proabably be needed. See this video Fishing and Cooking Mackerel on Chesil Beach thanks
