Cake hit the thickest stuff; see where they fish are holding on any certain days; conditions change and fish movement changes with it; if a fish is aggressive it will hit the bait very quickly in this shallow water;

How tight do you tighten the drag when punching in heavy cover?

Anthony D'alessio All the way down, no drag whatsoever. Using 50-60 lb braided lines and can`t give these fish an inch in this messy cover or you will be heart broken.

when you easily jerk the rod, how do you know when its weeds and not a fish?

Gut instinct; fish will usually feel a 'little like a sponge' on the end of your line and will usually have a slight movement signalling itis a fish and not just weeds; if I feel anything that I am not sure of, I set the hook, hard!

+David jeeps When your fishing for bigger bass in heavy cover, drag means lost fish! In situations where I am using spinning outfits, say for smallmouth bass or largemouth in clear water and using a drop shot, stick worm or tube jig, then yes the drag systems are vital for landing bigger bass; but in this nasty stuff, its... bite, hookset, reel in, catch, kiss and release and start over again. I've never understood why guys who are right-hand dominant choose to use a right-handed reel... Why waste time using your right arm to pitch/cast and then having to switch the rod over to your left arm for retrieve? I use left-hand baitcasters all the time and it is worth it to not have that second or two it takes to switch the rod over. Timing is everything in fishing, you would think you "pro's" would grasp this relatively simple concept. Otherwise, cast/pitch with your left arm if you are going to use a right-hand reel.

No pro changes their swing, see what happened to Tiger Woods when his trainer decided to 'improve' his swing, bamm!, he`s not even in the top 50 ranking anymore. Can`t change habit and thats just my style, quick on the draw and powerful hooksets. Instinct can`t be taught.

I see... Well the way it was for me was I started with a spinning reel, and when I was old enough to be trusted with a baitcaster (you know, backlashes and whatnot) I found using my left arm to try and fight the fish was terrible and awkward. Plus, I felt like I wanted to pull on the reel while semi-rotating the rod to get the fish in. I stayed away from baitcasters for a long time after that. Once I got my hands on a left hand retrieve baitcast, I wondered why or how not everyone has figured this out yet? For me, my power arm has and always will be my right and that's the way it will be. I guess I just never understood why if you can learn to use your left arm for fighting why can't you learn to use it to cast? Anyways, thanks for responding, I do enjoy watching your shows.

JB CommonSense EXACTLY my man EVERYTHING you just wrote is seriously what I have been saying to the tee for years now and I was shocked to find nobody else felt the way I do about this subject which I would assume is a big deal considering all the tools that have been invented and improved over the years to increase the speed an angler is able to react to bites while fishing, yet the most basic thing of all is so commonly overlooked it’s just crazy!! They should change the name of the reels as a true righty uses a lefty reel and you nailed it with the spinning reel reasoning as I’d imagine 90% of bass anglers started out fishing spinning reels then WHY has this not become a major topic in the industry!?? I’ll take the advantage of the few seconds faster I am over my fellow anglers who will continue to use the wrong handed reels with the reasoning of “habit” and I’ll have the edge using lefty reels and being able to detect those immediate bites that anyone switching hands after casting will miss to land those extra fish in a tournament! And you know it’s always the big girls that bite it immediately and spit it out just as fast as they sucked it in! Great post my man glad to find another fisherman who really “gets it”! Btw ExtremeAngler, other than the hand switching, awesome video with lots of great info thanks!
