Catching Big Bull Redfish in the St. John's River

Redfish can be caught all year long in Northeast Florida but during the fall the big Bull Reds come through the channel. Bull Reds are the Redfish that are well over the maximum slot size of 27". These fish like to eat bait like crabs and Mullet. It can be live Mullet or big chunks of cut bait. We use heavy tackle when targeting these fish. We use the same gear that we use for bottom fishing for Grouper and big Red Snapper.

I have caught the big reds out there in the past. I would suggest you try catching croakers. Fish a double drop rig with shrimp around Blount island and fill the live well with hand sized croakers. Then just fish the same rig as you are using and fish the side of the channels ….. it’s cheaper and easier than buying or trapping crabs ….

You never get international Park you cannot catch one legal size anyways I always throw them back. Everybody redfish are not that smart. We have to protect them. That was a monster you pop nice
