Catching Catfish to Eat

Fishing for catfish means keeping a few catfish to eat. On this catfish fishing trip I am keeping some blue catfish to eat, while looking for a much larger fish. My best catfish bait is on board, which is cut bait consisting of white perch and also pieces of chicken for catfish bait.

In Kansas our state W&P set a slot of 25” for “eaters on the lakes they are trying to build up the blue cat populations on. You can keep 1 over 48” but most guides do not allow it on their boats. It is working well at keeping a lot of big fish being caught along with plenty of eaters for them that want them.

Good Video I like to keep what I can eat. And I like the guide of 10# and over get released. Wanting to get out before snow flies they pull the docks on n the lakes here by mid October. and it’s archery season here in Pennsylvania. Decisions Decisions. I think I’ll go fishing for a day. Southern Fried Catfish ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup water salt and pepper, to taste 1 pound catfish fillets, cut in strips 1 ½ cups fine cornmeal ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning, such as Old Bay 1 quart vegetable oil for deep and I'll bring the sides ! 😁😁😁

A lot of guys are starting to drift fish the cats out here in Clearlake CA . I still anchor up , and I always do quite well . My son and I caught 14 yesterday . Keep it up " D " !

Spring video in october? Can you talk about your rigs in every video, even if it's repeat. Most don't anchor fish with a dragging weight pegged to a 3 way.

Couldnt get audio for some reason on this one.but title says it all about eaters .Here its a min. 24 in to keep Bluecats so not sure of weight / length but don't catch many anyways from my bank spots .I prefer to eat small flats really .I keep smaller channels for my Besties family .A 10 lb channel dont come along often for us lol.That's a biggun here ( my spots). Dieter, it took a while to land them fish. You talk about it being spring time but the detail below says tou posted it today:..10/9/2022.😁 Good video. Thanks for posting. I can't get out much any more. But even back when I was fishing a lot I never really caught bigger fish. You call what I used to catch mostly, dinks. I lost all the bigger fish and I saw them. Way bigger than what usually bit on chicken livers and a #4 baitholder. Now I have everything from light to surf/heavy. I am trying to get my health back so I can go. I'll let you know how I do.

Is there a reason you never use shad for bait in addition to chicken and perch? I live in North Texas and shad is the preferred bait for catfish in this area.

Yes there is; it’s not worth the time and effort to catch when I can catch more fish on chicken and white perch with a lot less effort and time invested in catching bait.

Love all of your content. Talked everyone in the boat to use chicken in the mix for the last tournament. Caught about 80% on chicken. Got my son to 2 of his bucket list items. Fish a catfish tournament and fish on the Ohio River. Really want to put my son on some blues to push him farther on his catfish bucket list. Will be booking with you for next season, or if you can hook my boy into a big blue before, let me know and I will book that. His biggest blue so far is like 28 lbs. Mine is 46, but this will not be about me.

Taking care of your environment is numero uno! It's so much easier to just go to China Mart if you want to eat catfish. It's CHEAPER, easier, faster, and cleaner. If people continue to "keep catfish to eat" the fishing will eventually suck... So simply put, if you want to continue having fun catching catfish, always practice catch and release!

He's done testing videos about red jello and a few other additives, but he has settled on plain chicken breast. Any differences were minimal and not worth the effort. In his tests it normally outperforms regular cut bait.

I've got a very important question Dieter............ You're a camera man by trade and your vids are very well put together. You seem to have a grasp on what viewers want to see and what gets clicks. With that being said.....;.... WHY do you absolutely refuse to show any TAKEDOWNS?????????????? I'm going out on a limb here and this # is probably high, but I'd guess you'd be over 100,000 subscribers if you showed takedowns.... Rant over, carry on gentleman,

... Read your question and if I may speculate what his answer may be or maybe just a part of it. Running a camera or cameras all the time would require a LOT of upload (or download) time even if is only a few hours on the water, then the editing of all the unneeded footage takes a LOT of time. . On my trips, I would'nt start the GoPro's until there was a bite so of course I missed the, "take-downs", strikes, hits, etc. Keep in mind, I not only fish for cats but stripers, bass, snakeheads, etc. I purchased a GoPro 9 earlier this year because has two things I was looking for with the main one being, "Hindsight." With this feature, it can be set to 15 or 30 seconds. I keep mine on 30 seconds. What it does is, the camera is powered on but not recording all the time. When I get a strike, I set the hook (or let the circle hook set itself) then either hit the record button or say, "GoPro start recording." It will then have the previous 30 seconds of wherever the camera was pointed recorded hence, filming the hook-set/take-down. I too wanted to film the strikes or anything outstanding like fish jumping, busting on bait, etc. and, "Hindsight", has made it possible. I hope I didn't overstep my bounds and that has helped a little bit. . Jeff . .
