Tip to catch a big fish! If you're trolling and catch a small bonito or blue runner or you have a big ballyhoo/grunt... ANY BIG BAIT. When I first started fishing off Miami in 1972 you were guaranteed to see birds diving on bait, mostly pilchards, threadfin herring, Spanish sardines, or glass minnows on any given day throughout the year. I don't think we ever had a day when we didn't catch a baitwell full of live bait. In recent years, despite 50 years of experience and all the fancy expensive gear that would make King Solomon blush at how much it cost, I can't find a school of bait to save my life. Gone are the flocks of 20-30 pelicans diving on a massive school of pilchards in Biscayne Bay. And if for one day a school shows up, an entire fleet of boats will pounce on it to make sure it's gone real quick. Sad times. Not far from where you live is Garden Cove. The flats in front used to get massive schools of pilchards in the spring that would come it to spawn. It was real easy to make one cast and fill the well with perfect sized pilchards. Then the ballyhoo boats decided to put their nets around the entire school. They caught thousands of pounds. When they couldn't find a buyer they went back and tossed all the dead bait where they caught it. Never been the same again.
