Shellcracker fishing, also known as redear sunfish fishing, is a popular recreational activity in freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers. Shellcrackers are a species of sunfish known for their delicious meat and challenging fights. Here is some information to help you with shellcracker fishing:
Habitat: Shellcrackers are typically found in warm freshwater bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and reservoirs. They prefer areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, submerged vegetation, and ample cover like fallen trees or submerged logs.
Season: Shellcrackers are more active during the spring and early summer months when water temperatures rise. This is their spawning season, and they move to shallower areas to construct their nests. However, they can be caught throughout the year, especially in deeper waters during the hotter months.
Bait and Lures: Shellcrackers primarily feed on aquatic insects, snails, crayfish, and small fish. The most popular baits for shellcracker fishing include earthworms, crickets, nightcrawlers, small minnows, and grasshoppers. You can use them on small hooks, size 6-10, with a split shot sinker to keep the bait near the bottom.
Techniques: Shellcrackers often feed near the bottom, so it's important to present your bait at the right depth. You can use a bobber to suspend the bait at the desired depth or fish without a bobber and let the bait sink slowly to the bottom. Patience is key as shellcrackers can be quite cautious. Once you feel a bite, give a gentle hookset.
Fishing Gear: For shellcracker fishing, a light to medium-light spinning rod and reel combo is suitable. A 6- to 7-foot rod with a sensitive tip and a 4- to 8-pound test monofilament or fluorocarbon line works well. It's also helpful to have a landing net and a pair of needle-nose pliers to safely remove hooks.
Location: Look for areas with underwater structure, such as points, drop-offs, submerged vegetation, or areas near docks and fallen trees. These structures provide shelter and food sources for shellcrackers, increasing your chances of success.
Regulations: Ensure you are familiar with the fishing regulations and obtain the necessary fishing licenses for the specific location you plan to fish. Fishing regulations may include catch limits, size limits, and seasonal restrictions.
Remember to practice catch and release or adhere to local regulations regarding harvest limits to help maintain healthy fish populations for future anglers. ShellcrackerFishing

Lewis , people constantly boat riding makes a huge difference in the fish bite. It makes the water muddy and the fish bite will slow down or stop. I still managed to catch a few here and there but I had to work hard for them. I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel. Stay tuned for upcoming videos. Have a good one buddy.

Thanks I'm glad you enjoy the channel. I do put in a galivants ferry some but not much. It's too busy there. I will go to Davis landing or knife island if I'm fishing this way. I fish all over little pee dee. Fish the deeper holes farther away from the bank around brush if possible. Smaller fish are close to the bank normally. I hope this helps. Gavin, I fish all over the little pee dee. I fish towards Galivants Ferry area all the way towards the lower end of the county. The water is super low right now so it's hit and miss with the fish.
