The woodpecker probably heard a hollow sound. Which is what they peck for to find grubs and bugs inside trees. He mistook your trail cam for a hollow area and did what they do haha.

They will drum on objects as a call. The trail cam probably made a nice sound when the woodpecker tapped on it.

I lived in a three-story house that was made of steel and the fireplace chimney was solid steel and ran from the bottom floor all the way out of the roof. Then a woodpecker discovered it and obviously loved how loud it was. So every morning at about 6 AM everybody in the house would get woken up from this little sucker pecking on the chimney. It would resonate throughout the whole entire house!

😅. A flicker drummed on the roof of our corn crib at dawn. Heavy sheet metal, conical. That resonated so loud, my brother, then a high school junior shot it, then went back to bed!

We have similar case where a woodpecker returns every spring and noises up the neighborhood by pecking the siding. He must like the area, because he goes to a few houses 🏘 for his pecking entertainment.

I raised a baby woodpecker that was newly hatched when I cut down a dead maple tree that was completely hollowed out in many areas of the trunk. That lil guy could peck the snot out of me. Super hard beaks, with a air controlled ratchet heads lol! Sorry to see the tree and critters go that supported it. But to close to the house for comfort.

@@jenniferwhite6089 I was amazed I kept him alive, I was giving him raw burger and blueberries, I tried some live bugs, but he didn’t really go for it, I had to kill the bug. But it did survive, and I took it outside daily, one morning, he flew away. I saw him months later too, perched close to where the tree was he hatched from. Pretty cool. Just as hard as raising a human child, the attention was off the chart. Called him woody lol

A woodpecker came to my house and started making a hole in the roof. Long story short, I ended up with a collapsed ceiling and wasn't able to do anything about it for months, as it kept raining during that time. I can never forgive that woodpecker, but I hope it got what it came for ( bugs? )

I have had problems with woodpeckers in the past. I have found that reflective surfaceses help keep them away. You may want to try something like Shurtape DC 181 HVAC tape on parts of the camera and/or the tree to disuade them. Anything with a mirror like surface will probably work.

Some woodpecker birds in springtime, when they are listening for others tapping, if a person does an answering same sound tapping, the bird will notice that. Then after a few answers, if the person replies same +ALSO adds a tapping tune on the end, then the bird notices it + tries the tune. If person has time to use on it . What results is a wild bird trying out a song beat. Then next year when they migrate through the area, that bird is recognized by it's musical tapping. Same works for wild songbirds, but using song copy ending-altering.

I went with black bear since they're usually the ones that destroy Tim Harrell's trail cams. They're like raccoons but with big enough teeth to pierce the sensor.

Ive had several of those cheap amazon trail cameras. They make noise when they trigger and it drives birds crazy. I have video of a red tail hawk playing with one of mine for hours

I have several holes in my vacation cabin due to these critters. The amount of force these birds can jack-hammer with their bills is amazing. Can be very destructive but they sure are pretty!!

A few years back my dad checked his trail camera and found it in pieces. I let him use my SD card reader to look at his photos While I went to go check my trail cams. I got back and my dad showed me this close up shot of a black bear. Glad to see he was our cluprit and not some trespasser

I had 5 of my motion alarms Fresnel lenses destroyed by Woodpeckers. Found replacement lenses and put lath wire over the whole front and top with slightly woodpecker damaged solar panels. No problems since. Camera? What do you think?

Fun fact! During mating season male woodpeckers have to make the loudest pecking to attract mates and some have started pecking on manmade objects because hitting metal makes a much louder sound than pecking wood!
