It's so amazing to see how far the homestead has come in just two years, not to mention the great diversity of wildlife that it attracts! Can't wait to see what comes of it in Year 3! I'm not exactly sure what your plans for the ponds are, but it'd be interesting to see how those might be transformed in the warmer months. The pond without fish should most definitely stay fish-free to accommodate the amphibians, but I'm wondering if the trout pond couldn't use a little tweaking. Perhaps some small trees at various spots across the bank to offer different temperature ranges, not to mention bank stability, as well as reeds and other water plants for insects and birds to use as perches. Most interestingly though, I wonder if adding different species of native fish to the pond wouldn't influence the kinds of animals that might be attracted to it, primarily those that eat fish. I know the point of the homestead is to change the landscape in order to attract wildlife, but fish aren't exactly known for traversing over land, you know?

So glad you enjoyed it! I’m definitely still thinking of how I want to manage that trout pond. If I do put in trees/shrubs, it would have to only be on one side of the pond because along the backside is a dam. It’s fine when the trees are alive, but if they die and the roots start to decompose, it can cause gaps in the dam and weaken it. I was hoping to do a native fish pond but we’re in an area that’s close to important waterways, so we can only stock specific species of farmed trout unfortunately. I’ll probably restock it this spring with smaller sized trout, maybe draw in some Kingfishers

Another great video of a dream life… I wonder, how long did you have to save up in order to be able to afford such a big homestead? I am really planning on doing the same, but in my own country Belgium. There are some great places in the Ardennes, where I assume some plots can be bought.

Thanks! Took us a while and in the end we only got accepted by 1 bank for a mortgage. Won’t lie it was stressful and frustrating, but worth it in the end. Not sure what mortgages are like in your area, but I’d start calling some banks just to see what they’re looking for. Some banks will tell you certain targets you need to hit to be preapproved for a mortgage - like cash down, income, etc.

@TheWildlifeHomestead, what is the method you use for seed collection?
@TheWildlifeHomesteadСағат бұрын
I do most of it by hand. I use reusable seed collecting bags that I can use to store the seeds in a cool, dry place. I don’t do it for every species, some are just easier to buy than try to collect

This is magnificent work; with the great blessing of not having to listen to Richard Attenborough obsessing over 'evolution', I don't watch him at all because of this . fly in the air over the earth.” 21 So God created the large sea animals.[a] He created all the many living things in the sea and every kind of bird that flies in the air Genesis 1;20

Wonderful video! I watched a lot of nature videos as a kid, and yours reminded me how much a good one can spark curiosity and love for nature. Btw, have you heard of a method of planting called Miyawaki? I've seen some examples of it from some rewildling channels I watched and it looked rather promising for growing plants really fast without use of fertilizer or anything, it's pretty uses the plants own competitive nature to outgrow their neighboring plants.

Thanks so much! And yup, learned about it in school and want to do a planting in this style next year

depending on your climate I would look into native winter food sources for the birds. Plants like Amalanchier utahensis, Prunus virginiana or a local species of hawthorn tree. As for annuals, Helianthus (sunflower) species' are great seed sources in the fall. With a few targeted plantings of these plants will make a huge impact on bird activity in the winter.
@TheWildlifeHomestead55 минут бұрын
Thanks for sharing! We’re out of the range of utahensis, but we have a handful of native Amelanchiers that grow here already or that I’ve put in. We have Prunus virginiana too but the fruit never makes it to the winter, birds love it too much haha. I’ve planted some native shrubs/trees that should hold their fruit well into the winter - Ilex verticillata, Aronia melanocarpa, Rhus typhina, Crataegus crus-galli, Viburnum trilobum. The hard part now is just waiting for them to produce haha

Thanks! Yeah I'm keeping that open as a possibility. I kinda like the idea of going a bit slower and seeing how the area responds. I could always cut more later, but I can't put a large tree back if I cut too much.

What explains the behavior of the mouse killing the chicks? Is it a response to kill off potential predators and/or competitors for resources?

They eat them. At least, the most nutritious parts of the chicks, and then leave the rest

There's a couple of creators on KZbin, like @NativeHabitatProject, that advocate controlled burns to help eliminate invasive plant species. Maybe look into that as a possible solution to help with some of the tougher areas where you're dealing with invasive.
