My grandma loves to knit and she used to be amazing at it but now she really does not have the attention span to follow a pattern. Still she wants to knit cute animal sweaters for her great grandkids. So while she's making the animal part I sit beside her and dictate to her the entire pattern and watch every stitch she makes so she doesn't make a mistake. She still makes a lot of mistakes and there's a lot of frogging and I know I can make the sweaters myself in half the time but these are some of my best times spent with her. We're making a penguin sweater right now and there are a lot of floaters at the back so I showed her your video. She's amazed how easy it is and how she didn't know it all these years.

I want to put a rider to the video for those who knit in the "english" fashion. I tried this and found multiple times that the 'floater' yarn was not "captured" as shown. Sometimes it was, but other times not, with no apparent reason. Eventually I worked out what the problem was, its the postion of the two yarns relative to each other as you wrap around the needle. The knitting yarn MUST be underneath the floater yarn for this to work. To try and explain this better, when you wrap the floater yarn, you can see that the knitting yarn can be either above or below depending on how you have picked it up. Maybe the continental way does not cause this problem.

Thanks Suzanne. You mentioned not to pull the floats taught however there could more said about that. In a fitted garment I found it important that the float have as much stretch as the knitted fabric. Socks, gloves and hats for example need a lot of stretch. I’m picking up good tips and techniques. Keep them coming.

Thanks for the demonstration Suzanne, but am I missing something here ? You say this can be knitted flat or in the round , but only show the technique on the knit side . I may be being a bit thick here, but it would seem to me that if it was worked back and forth ie flat, then a different method would have to be employed on the pearl side. Is this so ?

That’s exactly how I knit stranded work. I had to learn the “no stack” rule by trial and error years ago after being frustrated with trapped colors peeping through the right side. That is the cutest motif ever! I’m obsessed with dogs to a clinical degree...😆.

The thing I want to learn most is how to recognize the trap when I come to it, in the following row. The two types of floats look different and I've been struggling with how not to stack them for years. Could you possibly do a video showing exactly how to see what specific stitch is trapped? And it is also looks completely different to me when the lower row is a different color that the new, versus the same color for both rows.

Great job demonstrating. When I knit stranded color work, I'm noticing that some of the stitches are knit with the leading leg in the back rather than the front. I'm obviously twisting something when I use Continental in my left hand. Do you have any idea what is happening? Thank you. Sheryl

When you create a new stitch, whether you hold the working yarn in your right hand or left hand, the yarn should go around the right needle counter clockwise, (point the tip if the right needle to your face, the yarn should be going round the needle counter clockwise). If you go around clockwise, the leading leg will be in the back.

I’ve been trying different methods and I really like how you to get right to the lesson. I found that I get the concept of trapping the yarn, but my when I pull the yarn behind to hide it, it can pull the floats too tightly. I want invisible floats, but not at the cost of a tight piece. How do I do this? I had to undo several rows of a sock that I hadn’t checked and they were so tight! I had to undo them. No amount of stretching was going to change what I’d done. Believe me, I tried. How do I balance floats that will stretch with invisibility?

‘That little tug that I do to hide the float, is not enough to shorten the float. The trick is to make sure the float is plenty long to begin with. Longer is better than shorter. I have never had a problem with floats being too long, so that is what to strive for. Be sure to pull the stitches on the right needle back away from the point, at all times, this helps to keep the floats long.

You are a terrific knitter. I just finished a sweater in the round with a unicorn on the front. Since I didn't float the yarn colors properly, the design shows pulls. Can I cut the long strands and knot the ends or should I undo the entire sweater? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried blocking it yet? That is the first thing to try. If the pulls still show through, then try manipulating them with a tapestry needle. As a last resort, try cutting. ‘But, I would do that on a swatch first.

I had to watch every time for the first dozen tries repeating "white on, pink on, white off" (yarn is lavender and khaki), and still tremendously awkward in the 2nd row, but tyvm! 💕Haven't done a colourwork project in 10 years and this is so helpful for good tension with the floats. I carry both yarns in my right hand, with CC underneath for dominance, but white has to be on top to wrap first, so the yarn twists each time. Do you have any idea how to avoid this?

If working with 3 colors would you trap 2 colors at the same time or would you stagger trapping each color float separately?

Great video (as always)!!! You mentioned that you might want to use this motif in socks. In that case, would you trap your floats more often (e.g., every other stitch) to avoid having longer floats that toenails could easily get snagged on? Or would you simply place all the motifs above the heel so you could roll the socks down to the heels (all floats on the outside), slip you foot into the foot of the sock, and unroll the sock up the leg?

Great question. In a sock, my yarn would be fingering and I would be getting 9 to 10 sts to the inch. So the floats would be much shorter. I have knit quite a few stranded socks and have never had a problem with the floats catching as I was putting them on. It is due to the small yarn and gauge. Thank you and happy knitting.

Your videos are so helpful! So when you catch the float, is it actually caught twice? I've been trying and trying and unless I move the ball of yarn, the float gets caught twice if the yarn I'm trying to catch is coming from the right (the thrown side). Is that what is supposed to happen?

If you want to make little bows, just use a little silk ribbon or something and tie a little bow around their necks.

How do you do trapping floats when increasing in a pattern. I am knitting a face and the tension is to tight.
