I feel like using different coloured yarn may not be the best for this type of test. I know from fabric sales that the same fabric can feel and behave differently depending on colour treatments. I'd be curious how different they would be if they were the same colour or undyed.

I love the way you demonstrate this method however I have unpicked and re-started 10 times and I can't get rid of large holes on the sides of the heel. I'll have to go back to the fleagle heel which I've been using for years. 😢

This video was so helpful and inspiring! I am "vintage" and have been knitting since I was 15. I can really relate to Joan's stories about her experiences early on with knitting, books, Schoolhouse Press, Knitting Camp. My knitting took off when I purchased Knitting Without Tears at the Chicago Loop Kroch's and Brentano's. I was so fascinated! I have all of Schoolhouse Press' early videos and enjoy them to this day (Wool Gathering too). I consider the late-70's-mid-80's the Golden Age of knitting books as far as techniques go. I was never able to make it to Knitting Camp and to this day regret it. I did take a class with Meg Swansen years ago and learned so much! Thanks for this wonderful episode. It is not only interesting, but instructive as well. Joan, you've inspired me to not fear modifications.

Dear Suzanne, I finally got around to learn and practice this new technique. I love it, it's genius and thank you for this very precise good video. I could do 2 colored knitting with 2 hands with perfect tension already. Now I tried this technique for charts that cannot be done otherwise. But as soon as I combine that normal 2 colored stranded work with the occasional ladder it's puckering. Like, not only in the row where I started the ladders but throughout. It seems evident that as soon as I create knitted floats the float takes on a 3D texture and wants to contract. I have now started to do a YO before knitting into the ladder stitch. The next round I let the YO fall and create a new one. The fallen YO provides the extra length that the back ladder requires to not pucker the fabric. The YO frees me from the challenge of keeping those select ladder stitches very lose while keeping even tension for the rest, that's very difficult to do and also not reliable. It messes with my flow and my overall tension. The YO is my best bet as of now. The downside to it is that in some situations some single stitches get slightly enlarged on the front side so the YO isn't perfect. Just thought I would leave it here for others who have similar issues with puckering. Thanks

Suzanne, how do you stop the knitting from curling? Even if blocked it will curl again, wool has memory. So, I guess you would garter stitch, or seed stitch, however I wonder how that would effect the I cord? I think the stockinette space above the i cord sets it off. So. maybe stard with a knit row then garter? Also garter and seed have the same gauge, but. garter is larger. Does. this make a difference? Thanks.

This is a very common concern. In this instance I would make swatches and try the various techniques and see which I prefer. Each yarn has its own characteristics. Such as fiber content, twist, superwash vs non-superwash and stitch details. The only way to answer your questions is to swatch.

Would I be able to follow these directions if I was knitting a ribbed hat in the round? I love the idea of creating these solid stripes as you have shown, but fear your directions will somehow turn out diffently if I am knitting in the round. For example, when it was tirme to change from white to the blue , you did three rows which gave you and lovely blue stripe, but that third row set you up to start the next white stripe. If I wanted my blue row to be wider, I guess I would just contiue with the blue yarn. However, I'm wondering if the third row (which you KNIT in white), I would do in blue using the rib stitch. Please advise and thank you so much!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 күн бұрын
Yes. The number of rounds does not really matter as long as it is at least 2. This method will not work for 1 round stripes. For 2 or more, you would always knit all the stitches in the first round of the color change, then continue with the rib pattern for the following rounds of that color.

How do I wind the yarn into a ball, after it has hung to dry??
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 күн бұрын
Once it is skeined as I show in this video, you can either wind directly into a ball from the skein, or you can place the skein on a swift. If I don't have swift available, I often hang the skein over my knees and then wind from there. The back of a chair will also work, or you can have another person hold the skein between their hands.

Note to self. This took 5 hours for 2x 10/20 row hems of 78sts. Actual knitting time only was recorded on a timer. If you can use a normal folded edge, then do so. This co also needs sampling beforehand as you will need a size smaller for the first row( where the yarn overs are made) and a half size smaller for the 2nd row. For example r1) 2mm. R2), 2.5 mm main piece) 3mm Otherwise the first row , which will become the top most, visible line will be very unsightly, and its impossible to have a nice edge by the usual remedy of pulling the stitches. You just cant because the yarn doesnt follow the usual path, rather it twists around back and forth and you just cant figure where to pull, and ecen if you can, its impossible to do it evenly. As a result you get an edge that looks like a mouse has been eating it. This cast on might work better with some yarns than others so test it first.
