@@NiclasKPop what makes the story line so complex and difficult to follow is that it is shown out of order and with regular flashbacks to happy times eg school trilogy often within the same music video. I was convinced that Eunha had died before it appeared that she was actually the only one left alive trying to change history with the special powers of her blue butterfly 🦋.

In this video, you hit the first metamorphosis period for Gfriend after their climb to stardom. You can see how Gfriend continued to experiment while retaining their signature sound. In "Fingertip", they added the funk element and made a distinct change to their styling as you noted. The reaction to "Fingertip" is always of great interest to me as I watch its reaction videos. And it is quite consistent that its elaborate MV approach that put emphasis on visual sophistication (compared to their earlier MVs) and intriguing storyline, coupled with the more mature image styling, appeal to the western viewers. This song, I myself found it to be a bop, somehow didn't retain the new-found Gfriend momentum. Many believe the direction of the comeback veered too far away from Gfriend's "Powerful Innocence" concept and bled Gfriend's Korean fanbase. It managed to win some critical praises and held its own with its commercial sales, but clearly management was concerned about alienating its fanbase. So your comment about "return to their root" is quite accurate. "Love Whisper" went back to its original concept and put the highlight on their choreo (as SourceMusic got a BTS choreographer to create its dance). Gfriend's music continues to explore with a quick comeback of "Summer Rain", that has more resemblance with a ballad. When Gfriend's journey took them to "Time For the Moon Night", this song reignited the public's enthusiasm and started a new era for them, often known as the concept of "Passionate Melancholy", where the dramatic orchestral pop sound, carried with an up-tempo beat, addresses more somber topics in life. In "Time of the Moon Night", the subject is speculated to be loved one's departure (strongly implied as death). On the explanation of the MV for Fingertip, there is actually videos on KZbin with theories. My favorite is the one based Greek Mythology of Orion. This is a story where Apollo tricked Artemis to kill Orion out of jealousy. In Gfriend's lore, this is also the MV that speaks of the emergence of conflict and argument among the girls. "Love Whisper" occupies a special place in Gfriend's lore, since the pond where they played allowed the girls to acquire special abilities that became more prominent later.

almost all of Gfriend's MVs are related, tell a story. which can give rise to multiple perspectives/theories. The common thread is butterfly, glass bead, and a clock, but it's the butterflies that appear most often. and Eunha plays the main character here.

[LONG PARAGRAPH ALERT] About GFriend's storyline, it's a very subliminal and gradual progress. It's sort of lowkey and kind of lingering as you start to notice small connecting details in each music video. The MVs were also not released in chronological order in terms of storyline. The first 3 MV known as The School Trilogy. Glass Bead portrayed the daily lives of some innocent first year students. In Me Gustas Tu, their bonds became even stronger as they spend summer together. In Rough, they had to separate because of graduation (notice that only half of them were in the school building, the other half were in a train station, bus, and bridge) but eventually they always back together as shown in the outro. However, reality doesn't always happen the way they wanted, so apparently something that disturbed their friendship happened somewhere after The School Trilogy. The chronological after that might be a bit tricky, but it's somewhere along Love Whisper > Navillera > Fingertip > Summer Rain, with Time for the Moon Night being the aftermath. You've already watched all of them, you probably noticed that as the MV progress, the girls are getting lonelier. They're not always together anymore, and they only look "happy" when they're together. If you noticed, you also see more references of glass beads, butterflies, and clocks/time (in MV or lyrics), as those three things will play major parts in the storyline. Hint for the premise: one girl was trying to "redo" and "cancel" whatever things that happened back then, in order to "fix" their friendship, even if time might be compromised. Noticed that the clock were going backwards at the end of Fingertip? Playing with "time" is never a safe move, it always come with consequences. For example, parallel reality? What happened when those realities were crossing the roads at the same certain point in time? TFMN was already showing us moments of both, "the real present" and "a modified, alternate present". So, now you have Sunny Summer, Sunrise, Fever, Crossroads, and Apple left (at least for Korean title tracks). Let me give some heads up for the storyline: Sunny Summer & Fever were parts of the alternative timeline, and Sunrise is about the girls finding a way to connect and mesh the timeline (now that I realized, they're making pretty bad decisions). Not going to say anything about Crossroads or Apple because those were the most interesting MVs for me personally. I recommend you too watch their official story video "Tale of The Glass Bead: Previous Story" before you get into Crossroads, and "Butterfly Effect" before Apple. Sorry for making a paragraph lol, but I really enjoy your reaction. Very thorough, both in terms of musical references and the story of the music video. You did a great job!

I would actually recommend checking some (or all) of their dance practices and their b-sides. Gfriend is one of the top groups, if not the top group when it comes to b-sides quality, lots of nice choreos and highnotes. Hope u having fun and looking forward for more reactions

Gfriend's choreography is more about the teamwork. You really should check out their dance practice. Their synchronization is next level. They set up the bar of the difficulty of girl groups' choreography back then. They are the reason why girl groups' choreographies are so intense now. 😊

Tbh, if GFRIEND doesn't disband I would to recommend additional 2 more videos for you to check out because it is related to their storyline..There is a storyline from the Glass Bead MV up until MAGO but the timeline of all MV's is all mixed up (not in the correct order as per MV's order) 1) Tale of the Glass Bead - Previous story 2) Tale of the Glass Bead - Butterfly effect Yes, Glass bead & Blue butterfly are the major hint for their storyline but i guess it doesn't matter now because the group has been disbanded so yeah..

44:30 actually , during that era , buddys were saying that eunha was dead and the one's in the grave where yuju was lying earlier was eunha's grave , and then at night where the other 5 members were seen waving their flashlights onto smthg , they were actually waving onto eunha's grave , that's why the light from their flashlights were reflected on eunha's face. During the sunny summer era , buddys expected that umji tried to summon eunha back and followed eunha but end up died , that's why during the bridge of sunny summer mv , there were only 4 glasses (representing the remaining 4 alive members) But later on , during crossroad era , buddys again speculated that it was actually the other 5 members were dead and eunha was the one trying to connect with them back so that they could spend their time tgt , if u read the lyrics of their MVs , then it would mean a lot

The piano part of Summer Rain comes from the classical piece ''Im wundershonen monat mai'' from Schumann. I think the song's sounds do a great job at painting the ''summer rain''. I think it is simple, but overall it works together much better than most ''complex' songs, simply beautiful art.

yeah the thing i like the most about gfriend's music is that they seldom go for immediately catchy hooks and instead go for beautiful melodies that linger long after you listen to them. their songs need time to grow on you, which i think is why asian ppl love them a LOT but western kpop fans have a hard time getting into their music.

I did not realize how emotional I was gonna get while watching all the MVs in order of release (fan since 2015) 😭. The Mario comment during Fingertip was funny because Gfriend had a song called 'Contrail' which could basically be a Mario's soundtrack (in the same album that Fingertip). With Fingertip, Gfriend brought back retro and funk before it was a trend again in Kpop so it was kind of funny when people thought Gfriend was just surfing on the retro trend with MAGO (and now 'BOP BOP!' With VIVIZ). Love Whisper and Summer Rain are 2 sides of the same coin. LW is the happy version whereas SR is the bittersweet version. People who understand Korean really get to enjoy the full Gfriend's experience because the lyrics in Gfriend's are really pretty and Gfriend's choreos go hand in hand with the songs. The dance moves are a visual representation of the lyrics.
