Josh as a lifetime puget sound resident and avid fisherman who has persued sea runs several times with struggling success you've inspired me to give it more attention! Steelhead, salmon and trout all on the fly and now sea run cutthroat, my wife will be so thrilled once again!! Cheers and enjoy as I know you will!

One day! One day I'll get my first steelhead and salmon on the fly. I just started fly fishing few months ago and I've been fairly successful with trout on a local stream so far. My goal is to get a winter steelhead so we'll see. I was visiting long Beach and looked up online for a fly shop not really expecting to find anything. Was pleasantly surprised to find spawn. Went in and talked with Josh for a little and he gave me some spots to try out for cutthroat and rainbows. He also recommended some flies that killed it. He mentioned how they have a big selection of tying materials and by talking to him and watching his videos, he's inspired me to try and start tying my own. I had no idea that I was in the presence of a total bad ass though! Professional soccer player, avid fly fisherman and successful business owner?! This man's got it all!

I was up in Puget Sound on a business trip, and had brought one rod and some Coho lures. I found a spot where I could elevate above 10-15 foot of water, cause they weren't up close to shore. Once I got near that depth and boulders I start jigging a 2/5 oz little cleo and Cutties from 10-15 inches were coming out of the boulders and smashing it! It was amazing. A harbor seal almost stole one...but luckily the Cuttie got away!

Great video buddy! I'm from Alaska and just moved to the Olympic peninsula a few years ago. Being from Cordova, I mainly chased searun cutthroat and silvers around on the Copper river delta. You just showed me that your fishing the same way as I do up north. Cool 😎 I just need to get off my surfboard and start fishing the beaches here.

@@CatchMagazine 70's kid from QA fishing sockeye in Lk Washington and steelhead at the locks, stockers at Green Lake. Ate crayfish from the ship canal 🤢. But by the 90's, the pull of flyfishing and central Oregon took hold and since then nearly all of my trips have been to the desert. I'm only recently starting to contemplate flyfishing these local waters again with my Alpacka rafts.

I was introduced to sea-run cutthroat in the 80's on the Cowlitz River. Big, and lots of them. I was just a kid and just learned what a Royal Coachmen was and the trout were eager to take them. It was too easy to catch 5, 14-18" sea-run cutthroat in an hour or so. It was a fisherman's dream. Your video has inspired me to dust off the old 8-9 weight. I've spent so much time chasing salmon and steelhead I've forgotten about these wonderful trout available to us in the Puget Sound. I still fish the Cowlitz but it seems those big cutthroat are long gone. I've caught 12" ers but that's about as big as I've seen them and I don't know why that is other than maybe the hatcheries aren't planting as many and different strains? Thanks so much for such a cool video. Time to get the old fly tying vice out and maybe buy a new fly rod. Definitely some new fly line. Lol.

Great film on our cool coastal cutthroat. I fell in love with them as a kid and have been having a blast chasing them with my nephews this fall. I have never fished for golden dorado but I imagine that is what our cutthroat would be like if they got that big. Nothing would be safe...

I've never understood why our coastal cutthroat don't get bigger. Of all the anadromous salmonoids, our coastal cutthroat seem to be on the smaller end. They don't get much bigger than the natives that stay in freshwater year-round. Meanwhile, almost all other cutthroat sub-species that stay in freshwater grow much bigger. You would think they'd grow to a size comparable to our PNW steelhead while they're in the ocean, but I guess not.
@seafly9078
@seafly9078 Жыл бұрын
Unlike steelhead and salmon, our coastal cutthroat prefer to stay in our estuary waters and rarely migrate more than 5 miles from their native river. They do not head out to sea as the others do to the same extent, and most in Washington don't leave Puget Sound. We also have resident salmon that don't leave the Sound for the Pacific that also do not get as big as the migratory salmon that do. The biggest cutthroat in the Sound I've witnessed was at the 26 inch mark, with anything over the 20 inch mark being a trophy.
