is there anything published or available anywhere that shows forecasted minus tides?...the almanac only has high tides and is only for a generalized area (sf)...can minus tides be extrapolated from that?...i've tried internet sources, but only found daily tide tables...maybe i'm looking in the wrong places, or not far enough...love your channel and all your associates (subbed them too)...
@catchncookcalifornia15745 жыл бұрын
Harold, I am pinning your comment here as it is a very valid question that likely more viewers have. I have been clamming since I was one and a half years old so it never even occurred to me to add info on tide tables into a video. To answer your question, you can get a tide book from any fishing shop near the coast for a couple of dollars which show predicted tides (high and low) for the whole year. Additionally you can look at websites such as Mobile Geographics which offer the same information. Just input which month, day, year, and location you are interested in and it will show you the predicted tides. The link is here for San Francisco Bay, but if you google "Tide Chart" for another bay, it will also pop up. Unlike wind and swell predictions, tide charts are usually pinpoint accurate! Happy clamming and thanks for the support! tides.mobilegeographics.com/locations/7058.html

Beautiful, I always put the Horsenecks in a bucket of fresh water for a few hours. They purged a bit plus the siphon extended until it was two to three feet long. Then I blanched the siphon, discarded the first inch of the top and then ran the extended siphon meat through a meat grinder. Much more tender when relaxed. Clam cakes and chowder was the next step. Just found your videos and love them. Did all that stuff decades ago. 81 now and love the memories.

Try getting salt and pouring them into those little deep holes in the mud and keep filling the hole and see what comes out. The holes that look kind of like a key hole shape usually have a razor clam in it.
@catchncookcalifornia15745 жыл бұрын
I have seen folks try this with great success on the east coast and in Europe, but I am pretty sure it is illegal here. Not that the regulations specifically state "no salt", but they are pretty clear on only digging and gathering by hand, rake or shovel. I will look into it though and see 1) if it hurts clams that are potentially undersized and if not 2) if there is a loop hole and it can be applied here in CA. Razor clams are also typically found in more sandy matrix than the mud flats we were digging this day. Something about those clams just makes them favor that higher energy open coast environment rather than bays.Thanks for the comment and for watching!

It is our policy to not give up specific locations as poachers also monitor our comments and they have no care for the sustainability of the harvest. Search Google Earth for bays and mud flats, then cross check with California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Marine Protected Area (MPA) maps and State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) maps to be sure it is a legal location to harvest. I am sure you will find some good spots. But when you do, please keep them quiet. "Loose lips sink ships" :) Always call the Biotoxin Info Hotline before harvesting shellfish as they could be deadly poisonous during certain times of year 800 553 4133. Thank you for the health info. If i want to digging for steamer clam next week and call the biotoxin hotline before i go and it dont mention any warning where im going. would it be ok to harvest.or maybe it best to just avoid it during summer month
@catchncookcalifornia15744 жыл бұрын
I would not go for steamer clams this time of year. The Biotoxin Hotline does not ever say "steamer clams" in their warning, but they do say "whole clams or scallops should not be eaten" during this time. That means that larger species (if the gut is removed) are typically safe to eat as you are not eating the dark parts that contain concentrated doses of the toxins. However, eating steamer clams (smaller species) means you would be eating them whole ("whole clams") and therefore you would be eating the gut as well. This is VERY risky this time of year. If you really have the itch to go clamming in the warmer months, I suggest going for the larger species like horse necks and Washington's, removing all dark meat and guts and discard it, and eat only the white meat. You are allowed 10 Horse Necks and 10 Washington's so even with the gut removed, that is a lot of good meat! This is what I have been doing in the summer months since I was a kid. Be safe, and thanks for asking good questions! Remember, no clam or mussel is worth your life.

Sorry but it has been our rule not to give up locations since we started this channel. A Google search will surely yield some good results for you. That is an interesting technique I have not heard of. If in CA though, it is not legal to take clams other than as follows: California Department of Fish and Wildlife Code "29.20(c) Special gear provisions: Spades, shovels, hoes, rakes or other appliances operated by hand, except spears or gaff hooks, may be used to take clams." I believe a warden would describe your rig as a gaff-hook even if it is homemade. So if you plan on clamming in CA just keep that in mind. Thanks for watching!

Does anyone know where is the location? We are trying to find a place that we can dig the clam in Southern California
@catchncookcalifornia15745 жыл бұрын
We do not give up specific locations in order to keep spots sustainable, but clamming can be done in southern CA near SB or OC. Just be sure you are not in a MLPA and be sure to keep your spots quiet or they will be overrun in no time. Also, look up specific county health warnings as sometimes beaches near cities are unsafe due to sewage runoff after storms and such.

People are scared to eat a "snail" but they taste great! Good thing you stopped the people before they got any bad clams. The ones you made looked divine, wish I could try them. Do you know any areas around the Mendocino coast to dig horseneck or washington clams? I see steamer clams shells in the rocks here so I will try to dig them after the closure.

I think you would have to venture up to Humboldt Bay to find them. They both like heavy silts that are only found in slower moving bay environments. Open coastlines like the Mendo coast are a bit too turbulent for them I think. That said, you are correct that you can find steamers and Nuttall's cockles on the open coasts, and up there, razor clams as well (though the latter has been sadly closed due to toxicity for years now). Good luck!

Hey man you should check out Frogg Toggs for waders. They make a lot of outdoor and fishing clothes. They will also custom make whatever you need. Definitely check them out. Awesome video! Keep'em coming!

Is it already the time for Clam harvesting, again?? Boy time flies, I remember not that long ago we just start the end of season. Great job. New technique on getting those clams, didn't know that was possible other than ghost shrimping with that equipment. Nice indeed. If this technique works, I love to try this. It's less invasive to the clam bed and lot less big holes people leave behind. Aside from that, looks a lot less work than digging.

Thanks. As stated in the video mussels, whole clams, whole scallops and even some species of clam (such as razor clams) are not safe to eat this time of year. Only by calling the biotoxin information hotline can you be sure. Horseneck clams and Washington clams are currently safe to consume in most counties but ONLY if the dark meat and gut are discarded. Some species such as razor clams in Humboldt and Del Norte counties are so high in domoic acid that not even their white meat should be consumed.
