Merry Christmas Kevin! Great video! Sounds like this mushroom needs some practice before picking. That said, your crème brûlée looked absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing!!!

I am sure that will be good too but I would just add a dash so as to not overpower the delicate custard. Traditionally it is done with a splash of pure vanilla extract and that is also exquisite!

Saw a lot of these among the coastal oaks today too. Since we took your class last year, we've gone out lots of times with (mostly) decent hauls of different species! Chanterelles seem a lot slower this year compared to last year, is that the case for you too, Kevin?
@catchncookcalifornia1574Күн бұрын
Glad to hear you have been finding some goodies! Yes, I am still finding a few chanterelles but last year I was seeing triple the yields at this time of year. But that might change as the season progresses. Been seeing a lot of other edibles though!

I loved having a little cloth bag of these on my rear-view mirror in my car. Made the interior smell very nice. Thanks for giving such good advice about the lookalikes. I haven't eaten them before, so I would just dry out a bunch of LBMs and do a smell-check on each one to see if it smelled good. Your advice is much more efficient! Thanks Kevin!
@catchncookcalifornia1574Күн бұрын
I saw a lot of look-alikes today. Mostly those that exude a much thicker white milk (almost like Elmer's glue), with often larger caps, solid stems and slick caps.

Huge difference, these aren't funnels. I think we got some of these at work about 10 days ago. Chef didn't know what they were, they came in the order. I looked them up in my books after work, but they weren't letting out that much milk.White spores. After 4-6 days would they still release that much fuild?

You ever see sharks out there?
@catchncookcalifornia15744 күн бұрын
On occasion. Usually just small leopard sharks, swell sharks, horn sharks, but occasionally seven gills, mako, etc. I have not yet encountered a white but I know they are there and some of my friends and family have had encounters. When I take others out, I try to guide shallower waters to avoid them.

It is truly heartbreaking! But it is also important that we spread awareness an try to do whatever we can to help. There are currently sea urchin removal dives and low tide removals on the Sonoma Coast and Mendocino Coast organized by groups like the Waterman's Alliance if you would like to get involved.

Love this video. We used to catch these off the coast of Vancouver BC. We called them greenling. I always thought they were called that because their meat was bluish green. It’s crazy, but we used to coat them in cornflake crumbs and dip it in ketchup 😂

Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸🇺🇸I live by the King Harbor and I agree with what you’ve just mentioned. Beautiful and abundant oysters by the harbor and such a shame because these are not edible at all considering how much these oysters cost at the Quality Seafood by the Boardwalk- depending on the type of oyster can cost around $3.99 to $6 a piece. Wonderful video and invaluable information as always.👍🏽👍🏽

A bit inland, but Id love if you were able to do some videos on foraging (or survival) in the Shasta-Trinity area. Especially during the summer, it gets wildly dry here and I would think it poses some rather unique challenges on these fronts.
@catchncookcalifornia157415 күн бұрын
I will keep that in mind. I spent a good amount of time hunting and fishing that area as a kid so I have a lot of fond memories! With wildfire risks now being far worse than they ever were when I was a kid, I would have to use a backpacking stove for a survival challenge out there if it were at that time of year as open fire would be far too risky and strictly prohibited. Then again, that would prompt important discussion about factors like fire and fire danger in extremely arid contexts and could turn into a very informative video as a result.
@Thee_Sinner15 күн бұрын
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Yes, that fire risk is one of the things that Ive got a lot of worry about as well. Although I hadnt intended this for a survival scenario use, I have been trying to think of a way to use the hand warmers you mentioned in this video as a sort of home-brew flameless ration heater. The ones in MREs use iron and magnesium powder along with salt as a catalyst, and the user adds water. The hand warmers have iron, salt, and pearlite (to hold water). No idea the ratio, but it seems just adding some magnesium powder and a bit more water should result in the same effect as the FRH.

Knowledge is the best survival tool. Best thing is that while it takes work up front, and practice over time, it weighs nothing and takes up zero space in a pack. This video is an excellent example of where some knowledge (both of local materials and survival techniques) really proves its worth.
