One thinng I can say about the trips I have taken with Dr Kevin is the memories. In the end all the stuff we have is just stuff but the memories of things we have done will live with me forever. He gives you those memories, maybe something no one else can.

One thing I bring when crab catching is zip ties, I use it to bind the crab's claws so they cannot harm each other. Very important for rock crab in Washington. You put them in the same place as the rubber bands you find in a shop that sells live crab. I'd use the rubber bands, but I just don't have any.

just got a text from CA fish and game reminding me that groundfish are open again in your area. I'd like to sea you link them for your viewers. love your mushrooms too. keep on keepin' on. always a fan of the spanish shawl and the garibaldi, since about '94 maybe -93. we used to CRAWL over kelp on our hands and knees. I want to import sea otters so they can eat their 30 purple urchins a day and I can start crawling again.

Looking into freediving and out of all the channels yours was my favorite so far! Love the practical advise and free spirit you have. Can't wait to try it myself. Do plan on a solo experience most of the time which I know isn't smart but thats life.

You are definitely someone would be lucky to be close friends with! You are so knowledgeable with foraging & understanding so much about all the resources around your environment. I would feel so fortunate to have you in my group if ever things go to pots & we have to go back to the old ways of hunting & gathering. God Bless :) Love learning so much watching your videos. One of these days I will book one of your classes. :)

Have you even thought of using one of those underwater re-breather systems to stay longer under catches instead of constant resurfacing to breath?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Жыл бұрын
I have thought about it. I used to do a bit of SCUBA as well. But in the end I prefer the freedom and fluidity of freediving unincumbered by any bulky gear and solely reliant on my own breath hold. I will tell the stories of my near death experiences with SCUBA gear in a future vid. - Cheers

Wow I did not even know we had these in CA. When are you going to be near the jetty in Eureka??? Possible trip? Anyone else on board? I am scuba certified as well. Where are the local peeps?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Жыл бұрын
I will keep that in mind! I might guide something up there in Eureka area or Crescent City area this summer. I would need to confirm a group of at least 6 people over a couple of days to make the long trip. But all of that area is a home away from home for me. Lots of great college memories up there and such abundant waters and woods! -Cheers

Thanks for the feedback. I normalized the audio while editing this video to avoid that but for some reason it did not adjust the intro audio! I will definitely monitor that more closely in the future. Thanks again!

Not normally a commenter and I can't remember if you mentioned it in another video... for beginners.. how do you judge fish length at distance so you aren't unnecessarily shooting undersized fish?
@catchncookcalifornia1574

It is not easy due to magnification but I will definitely discuss this in an upcoming vid!

Thanks! I specialize in intro level spearfishing in the shallows (for beginner-level divers) so that would not be a problem at all. I guide freedive spearfishing on the Los Angeles Coast, Malibu Coast, Santa Barbara Coast, Monterey Coast, Sonoma Coast and the Mendocino Coast. More details at catchncookcalifornia.com I hope to get you two out there soon!

@heruhcanedean
@heruhcanedean Жыл бұрын
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 I would hope someone isn't watching KZbin videos while operating heavy machinery and practicing breath holds. Practicing breath holds while free diving probably isn't a good idea either. I like to get in a comfortable place to lower my heart rate and just hold my breath, always remember to breathe normal for 2-3 times as long as you hold your breath or your next breath hold won't be for very long.

Are those sea mammals illegal to hunt?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Жыл бұрын
Yes, all marine mammals are illegal to hunt in most states of the USA. They were once incredibly important food sources for coastal Native American tribes and in early historic times by colonizing peoples but were rapidly overhunted in the 1800's and are therefore now protected. Native Americans may be able to obtain a special permit for subsistence hunting of sea mammals in Alaska, but I am not sure of the regulations up there.

how long is you breath hold
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 11 ай бұрын
6 minutes was my record but that was just sitting on the couch. 2-3 minutes in the water sounds about right, but a new diver can hunt with success with a 45 second-1 minute breath hold too!
