To TVSproductions82: Unless I'm mistaken, the £5 was added in show 3 of series 1. Also, the first two shows had bonus catchphrases starting at £100 and adding by £100 for every bonus. The third show onwards, on the other hand, had £50 for the bonus and £50 added every time.

+Winning Streak Probably due to the first two shows having given way so much cash in the first 2 shows (Episode 1 was a £500 to £2345 result), the IBA would likely have been getting unnerved alongside TVS.

What happened with the scoring from 19:12 onwards?? Gillian's score goes from 295, to 320, then blank (listen out for that mechanical clunk!), then 315, then 335 (it's £25 per catchphrase), then to 340. By my reckoning, she was short-changed a fiver!

mercuryvapour @14:45 Gillian is on £150. She answers a £70 catchphrase “Love at First Sight” but gets awarded £75 taking her total to £225 instead of the correct amount of £220. However, at 19:12 they deduct the extra £5 BUT then only add £20 for a £25 Catchphrase (the penultimate one Gillian got right) - this was because they were having trouble adjusting the score and had two options in which to right it. So having eventually deducted the original £5 over awarded, they then had to adjust the final score of £335 to add back in the £5 shortfall from the penultimate catchphrase.

That's ok, Challenge are showing other games shows from the 80's, It's just the TVS ones they can't show, due to the new owners of the TVS archive lossing the paper work. The £5 was added in from series 2, not sure why they did this, maybe they were trying to save some money.

One thing that puzzled me about Catchphrase was the "Five seconds, here we go.". Why did he always say that, then give them much longer? Timing the the second square uncovered in this edition, she gets a total of 12 seconds in all. 9 seconds if you count it from when thee piece is fully uncovered.

Five seconds is the time it takes to fully reveal the square, so once it's fully revealed he gives you a reasonable amount of time to answer. Could be wrong though since I was 8 when I saw this.

No, I considered whether it had anything to do with the time it takes for the square to reveal but it only takes about 2 seconds. And at several points in this episode he says "We'll give you five seconds.". It's definitely referring to how long they've got to answer, but I don't know why they always made a point of saying "five seconds" then never actually caring if it took longer. BTW, when you made this comment KZbin was glitching and a lot of the comments made at that time haven't shown up on the videos, so I don't know whether this reply will get to the video page or not.

Thank you for the uploads. I haven't seen those in years as Challenge seems to have some sort of problem with showing gameshows from the 1980. I would just like to ask, When were the £5 value catchphrase's introduced? And why were they introduced? As you can see there this season didn't have them.

Thank you very much for your response. There is one episode of catchphrase I would love to see again as it was funny. What happened was this, it was the bonus catchphrase and the first square the contestant removed was the centre square and it was totally blank underneath as I believe the catchphrase was "merry go round" written around the edges. What made it funny was the centre square is usually the important one but this time it was blank.
