“For a long time my work has focused on women and the ways in which they defy society’s repressive codes. I was interested in how female singers are universally treated as objects of desire. At first, Cate looks gorgeous, but when she sings it’s a transgender’s voice. The audience heckles her, and she becomes confrontational. When the music comes back on, she does a seductive dance but her face is evil. For her final act of subversion, she takes off her hair and makeup and walks away. That part was Cate’s idea. Fuck the beauty.”

If one has to pinpoint a defining trait of hers, it has to be how steady and intense her gaze is. It's half her magic. They titled this issue of the magazine aptly (even if they meant it in a different sense): The Female Gaze.

You put it into words better than I could! There's something about her *gaze* that just transfixes you. So intense and yet charming in equal measure, you can't look away.

It's a gift the best actresses have, in my opinion. Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, and Cate, among others. The ability to look at you and all at once reveal something about themselves and about you, the viewer. Piercing and empathetic, arresting and coy. Their eyes just speak to you and without a single word, they can tell a story.

A marvelous demonstration of the skills of Cate Blanchett. That gaze! It grips you even in a B&W film.

The way she uses her expressions is priceless... Observe the gaze. From the intimidating persona to the nudity/vulnerability/sadness of the person she becomes once the Carnival is over... There is an urge for everyone to connect with eachother and our collective soul transcending carnivals. Love it. 5 min of pure Art

Not knowing the meanings the director had behind this, I found some of my own. What I thought about when seeing the singing scene was the fact that we all put on "performances", and strive to make the best impressions at the expense of our authenticity. That was why her voice is different, her appearance far from reality, as we put on masks in society, even with our friends. The part when she becomes enraged was, to me, the manifestation of our common frustration that, after all, nobody can comprehend another's emotions to their full extent and the inner corners of one's mind; yet we're so quick to judge despite this unbridgeable lack of understanding and empathy. The dance was thought-provoking as well - the image that immediately crossed my mind was that of a seductress, that in a way we embrace others' expectations of us; we have been conditioned to wear these masks for so long we forget what we so carefully hid away from impatient eyes, that we turn our backs to our own selves (as she does, and walks into the darkness - which is a symbol for the unknown, mystery and confusion). This to me, in the end, was about our perpetual need for validation, acceptance, approval from others. Only when she took off the wig, smeared the make-up in desperation yet relief, in a way metaphorically taking down her inner walls to that simple, vulnerable, innocent self she even became ashamed of, did she smile, showing us that this is the only way to be happy. She then went back into the darkness, with renewed confidence, stripping away her clothes (a much needed catharsis, perhaps getting rid of our own oppressing thoughts of ourselves, weighing us down) and heading right into the light, with her head held up high. It's an image of hope above all else. We can only change our own expectations of ourselves. (Just my interpretation, thanks for reading - have a great day, the world needs you)

i’m now watching this for the first time. i was confused at first watching it and never had read the caption. it was so moving, even though i was unsure of what the director and cate were getting at. before i read the caption, i thought wow how unique and beautiful even with the voice, everyone is unique and in this industry we act as though we are other people. this helped shed a light that equality is so important, being vulnerable in front of a crowd and not getting a response you’d hoped for is crushing but also very much crucial , i think to being more confident and doing things not only to inspire but to grow as a person and a performer. Cate is my all time favorite actress and i loved these short moments, they will stick with me through my whole life and help me realize and help me influence others to be good to others and be accepting.

I found this video to be captivating, not only because Cate Blanchett is in it. But also because she is representing a very important and inspiring topic about women. In addition, the vocals of the song are amazing and beautiful and Cate is an amazing person for continuing to be the shining star she is. ( Side note, the part in the video where Cate was confronting a person behind the camera and telling them to say what they were saying in front of the camera was also very appreciated and amazing, at least by my standards)

Is that the type of workshop filming that an actor/ actresses has to go through all the time? The camera captured so deep into a person that it almost felt too much to be revealing more than just an act. That’s takes a lot of confidence and self reflect and for most that Cate has is confidence. Thanks showing us something like that reviewing. If it’s not Cate. Most people will not noted there re films or workshop like these out there. And now we r aware.

This is too much for me. Well...u see...ART is the only „thing„ that helps me push through my shitty life in a shitty country, with an autistic kid & no future personal plans. This is ART. Not that we need to label stuff in general, but still... I've watched a lot of movies, it's a passion. Along with this passion comes another one: the passion (& NOT the obsession!) for actors. Not many of the so called famous ones could do what Cate Blanchett is doing here. Or what she's doing in a movie like Manifesto (2017). I guess the theater experience helps a lot. But the talent and the emotional intelligence .......forget about it man. She's just almost annoyingly perfect. Also the people who had this idea to put her in this context are incredibly fascinating and talented and interesting. Hats off for everybody involved in this amazing piece of intelligent, sensitive, creative, astonishing visual art. & thank you very much for sharing it on youtube.

E a Cate mostra o quão corajosos essas pessoas são e quem é covarde são aqueles que se aproveitam do anonimato para julgar e ofender terrivelmente.
