Best character in Downton Abbey. Wouldn't be half the show without her.
@mnomadvfx4 жыл бұрын
Yes, which really does make you wonder exactly what they paid her for it. A well known actress like that, in a non adapted (ie Austen/Bronte) TV series? I'd say they probably paid her more than anyone else in the series that's for sure. Though for certain Hugh Bonneville got a huge boost from it, before that I only remember him as doing small bit parts like in Notting Hill.

Totally agree. As hilarious and fun to watch as she is in Downton, the show hasn't really shown the depth and range of her dramatic talent. One of my favorite performances (along with the film The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne) was her 40-minute monologue filmed in the 1980s for the BBC, of Alan Bennett's Bed Among the Lentils, part of Bennett's Talking Heads series. It's here on KZbin, luckily. She plays the sad alcoholic wife of an ambitious vicar, and she is both funny and heartbreakingly poignant. As she tells her story, she captures her own character, her husband's and a gallery of local churchgoers. I've seen other actors do it but nobody comes even close to what Maggie Smith does with it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4XKqoynjpiLiqc

@marianonseq4722 жыл бұрын
It was not a matter of wealth, weekends are rather a modern invention. People used to get some time off on only religious festivities, or to go to church on Sundays. For what I remember from history books, labourers were just begining to fight for rights such as a FULL DAY off( there was this case of an anarchist so involded in the cause that wanted to name his son "Sunday Rest", so go figure).
@anona20172 жыл бұрын
It goes the other way, weekends do not happen in certain professions and many are too poor to have a weekend. I forget that weekends exist a lot of the time until someone mentions it.
@lever08112 жыл бұрын

@juliag.51142 жыл бұрын
@@anona2017 But still, you know what they are. And rich people today also know what is a weekend even if they’ve never worked a day in their lives, because they’ll likely employ people and these people are entitled to their day off (in most countries). It has more to do with labour rights than wealth. We see in downton abbey, those people had half a day off at most, if someone allowed them. I remember an episode were the footmen asked for some time off because the family was away and the butler was offended by it because the family was still paying them, so how could they possibly ask that. It was just unimaginable the idea of someone having a day off or two and still be payed for it, so of course rich people didn’t even know what a weekend was
@schubertuk Жыл бұрын
Yes it is interesting how we all forget that The Weekend, and indeed being a Teenager are modern inventions - 20th century inventions. Before this point people would be working every day (except for some time off for church on Sunday) -- and if that would be from the ages of 12 or younger unless their family could afford a private education. So The Dowager's comments are not so much a matter of class, wealth and status as a matter of The Dowager being a person of Victorian or 19th century sensibilities unaware or perhaps pretending to be unaware of the changing times.

She's absolutely incredible. She went through having breast cancer in the middle of filming Harry Potter and her performance and delivery of Professor McGonagall didn't slip a bit. Her wit and personality hasn't flinched a bit the older she's gotten. She was in her late 70's when Downton Abbey first started and she was completely on her game. She's such a legendary beauty. Those wittiness with her humbleness, classicalness with manner is priceless. We are far more than losing that charm of manner and ruining with attitudes of disrespect, cancelling each others in such a childish way. It's so shame that more and more people are forgetting about this manner and use way too simplified direct words to each others only to cause fight and argue with everyone. Maggie's existence showed everything. She listened, humbled, made everyone laugh, respected others, and proved her irreplaceable value instead of cutting out everyone to show how legendary actress she was. Rest in beautiful peace. What an icon.

There is just something about Maggie smith that speaks to the soul. From the delivery of her words-nothing is ever forced. She’s never been one to fear speaking her mind and though she never feels it is necessary to be the center or attention, her aura is like a beacon to anyone in the viscidity. She has always been my favorite actress and one of my bucket list items is to meet her one day-

I find her fascinating , I didn’t want the interview to end . She’s so not in to herself. Which is why she can play women so self absorbed. She has a sense of humor that makes fun of the ego in all of us - she is delightful . One has the sense that she either is very well aware of her charm or completely unaware of it. To be an actress and not want to see yourself in the film , to be curious to how you look in the role as a part of the movie says that her craft is very of the moment which was enjoyed at the time but she has no interest in revisiting the past. She has no vanity , and she often describes something as enjoyable if she is physically comfortable ( ill fitting hats , sitting in a trailer all day not being used, how cold she was walking outside, not being able to see out of her left eye thus reblocking a scene. I sense that her older body is a burden for her , that it holds down her spirit and energy. She’s. Easy to tell you that she’s common looking and I suspect that she doesnt want to watch herself on screen. Her audience finds her fascinating - her voice , her delivery of a line , her laugh, her sense of comedic timing , her deadpan stares and glares. She is unique , no one looks or sounds like her. I think she’s a bit sad that life’s journey is in the last frames and one senses that time snuck up on her like it does with all of us. I admire her sense of puzzlement as to why people find her fascinating , I think she’s fully surprised by it although she knows exactly what she is doing as she acts - it’s all very intentional . She has the classic English sense of humor - she sends up the common incidents of life and reveals the ridiculousness of it all. I think she wishes she had 50 more years but her body is tired and holds her back. She has the mind and curiosity of a 20 year old in a older weary body - the two aspects conflict with each other but her dreams win out and is why she keeps on going doing the work. Love her smile when she finds herself saying something that tickles herself and her listeners. Go Maggie Go !

I love how an specific kind of humour slips off so naturally (and sometimes even unintentionally) from british-accent performers. Even when they're taking about not so funny stuff or sorts.
