Caterham Valley - The Square, Godstone Road and Station Avenue

Regarding the pub , prior to the shopping precinct being built , I recall it had plenty of parking to the rear and also that it had a great Pizza Hut inside . That was circa 1985.

Intriguing that the Railway Companies did not extend rail operations into the surrounding areas,even if for freight only.As always,excellent quality product;those 1950s maps are superb.

@@philswallow well there is a turnoff where it goes to 365b Limpsfield Road and spears close which you haven’t covered yet. Just curious to see if there is any changes around the green aswell. And I just find really peaceful to watch you videos around the green to be honest :)

The refectory, down the way from the Miller Centre (or as I recall it, St John's school!) was the kitchen and dining hall for school. We'd walk in 2s, led probably by the Headteacher, excited chatter before the heads down which followed. I always remember the round skylight or window in the refectory, mercifully ajar as it would have been a greenhouse otherwise. Monday was cheese pie with limp tomato on it as I recall, but as the week progressed, it got better. Bit too much pink blancmange, with a skin you shelter under. I'll gloss over the warm school milk...Meanwhile, in the school yard at St John's (1970s, and a pretty unforgiving place to take a tumble) there was a water tap, where you would queue after lunch (or then dinner!) for a drink. Simpler times? I suppose so. St John's school ceased to be St John's circa 76/77 (however, happy to be corrected on the year) when we encamped up to Markville. Great times!
