No shit bud, we had a link belt 1100 with tracks, get buried on a power line right way due to liquefaction, we had 3 cat d8's pulling it out in the process the mud and tree roots ended up getting under the turn table and busting one of the track hoses. Talk about a work out, we had to dig down and back and up inside the housing. Because the cab was basicly ground level.

I almost opted for the updated pin which is 4" diameter instead of the 3.5" pin it came with. It has an oversized pin, oversized bushings and seals . You then bored to fit but it was over twice the cost of the original pin, and I thought it worked since 1984? It would work for the rest of her days?

I used to hand weld the bores like that in the early 90's for the CAT dealer I work for - lot's of work, we've got 3 Climax borewelders and boring bars now. On something like the center stick hole you show there you can set the Climax boring bar up and have the bore welded up in about 30 minutes, then put the boring bar back in and start boring 5 minutes after that, they've got a pretty good boreweld/boring bar interchange system with those.

Did I miss anything? About the only things I didnt see were a fridge, a lathe and some sort of mill, but you cant have everything or can you?

He pressed the bushings in with 50 tons of force. He said to weld them would distort the bushings and bore? He is very precise. The air arc never left a mark on any of the bores that I could see. I have learned a lot from him in a short time. I did ask him about the sleeve retainer and he just smiled. He said that's for factory bores that require 1 to 3 tons of force to press in. But if he had not insisted on not needing it I would have locktited it and welded it so we think alike.
@dadsvespa6 жыл бұрын
This guy is a master welder. And old man, who was a welder during WW2 taught me this same technique . You build up the area to be bored back to stock size...or whatever size you need. Usually done because boring into the worn steel, to install an oversized pin...would actually weaken the joint. Sometimes as in an engine with severe wear or damage, you bore out the block or part and install a cylinder with the stock inner cyl. diameter restoring the bore to stock size. I'm rambling...matt. .

Did you use any Loctite on the bushings before pressing them in? We used Loctite Cylinder sleeve formula, and then pressed them in with a fabricated high alloy ready-rod press. We opted to weld the bushings in after. Figured we would fly cut them out afterwards if they needed replacing. Don't know if this is done by the pros, but we did it for security. Does he have issue with shattered fly cutters from the airarc scars? We seemed to have a bad issue with this.
@gangesexcavating11 жыл бұрын
The next time through we are going to go with a fabricated 1 1/2" boring bar however. The bar is still too thin to take all the vibrations out, we found, when used in any more than a 14" span between the spherical bearings. We found the the steel had become work hardened in the oval areas,this was significantly harder of a material to cut. We went through quite a few fly cutters, but patience paid off, and we brought lots of cutters. Your bar had to be broached. Round cutters vibrate out of set.

I notice you have the upgraded H-Link. Cat originally had a Manganese alloy one-piece cast H-link. All good until it cracks. Ours did. We didn't know it was this special alloy. I welded it, pre, post heated it, and slow cooled it in a tub of floor dry, wrapped in asbestos blanket. Still cracked 10 hours later. Found out it was this wierd alloy. Local shop wanted $1700 to weld it because of the wierd alloy and special wire needed. Upgrade is a mild steel aftermarket H-Link. Found one for $400.

I don't know how much force we used to press ours in. We used 7/8" high alloy, fine thread ready rod, and ran them in with a 3/4" air impact. We ran 2000ths" undersize for an interference fit on the bore. We were additionally concerned about the welds cracking from use over time.Maybe we were being overly cautious, we don't exactly do it every day, you know. so we drilled, tapped and threaded a 3/8" bolt 90 degrees to the bushing, zip cut it off and plug welded it. Worried about bushing walking.

Our boring bar has a 3/4" hex head machined on the end. Now this can accept a 3/4" x 1/2" impact wobble socket. You need two universals to work correctly. So we put a 1/2" x 1/2" impact universal on top of that in tandem. We sacrificed a 8" x 1/2" impact extension and had it hex machined to accept to the mag drill chuck. The sockets were tack welded together. Now with the 2 universals, the mag drill turns the bar perfectly, full torque.

We have built our own line boring kit. We use a reversable Milwaukee magnetic dill, with infinite speed control, 9" travel. It seems to be the only one on market with these options. Our boring bar is 1" 4140 stock, that was drilled and broached to accept 1/2" fly cutters with 1/8" allen set screws. Chinese cutters are junk...use USA made ones. The biggest killer in a great cut is elimination of harmonic vibrations. Travel speed, cutter speed control, and depth of cut are massive variables.

Catepillar shop will take 6 to 8 hrs to just re-bore a built up hole. They always pre-heat. But I guess its a hillbilly shop in the sticks....so theres that.
@gangesexcavating11 жыл бұрын
We built our kit for under $1000. I think it cost around $750 or something. We used greaseable 1" Timken spherical bearings with 4-bolt mounts, on 5/8" square plates. The boring bar we made on our lathe at the shop, but had the allen screw holes and cutter holes accurately done at a local machine shop. After trial and error, we found we needed to 1/2" broach the cutter holes, so we bought a broach and did the job in our 50ton press easily. We rent the mag drill locally. Its big money to buy.

Hiring someone to do the job just simply wasn't an option. Our 235C is located 14 hours north of Prince George BC in camp. its 10 hours in on logging roads to get into camp where it is. The travel costs would have put the job well into the $7000-8000 area. So it was either pull the stick and go to town or do the job on the spot. We didn't have to bore weld, we just cut out the interfering material, and fit up the bushings accordingly - one shot deal. Pretty serious getting down to final cuts.
@pvtimberfaller7 жыл бұрын
I never had much luck doing it that way, if the bushings aren't completely supported they will crumble in a short time. Esp the hard steel type.
