Hi Ed ! Just wanted to say hello and hopefully you and the family are doing well ! It's really nice to see someone else take the extra time to do the excavating properly and care about others on the job especially the mason....I too have worked for and with ALOT of Mason's over my 36 years of being an owner/ operator and you learn so much from these guys on how to make they're job and ours as well so much easier. To me, batter boards are the best. Its old school, people here dont do it much anymore, or they dont know how. Even if you are digging alone you can pull a string to make sure you have the corner. Nice job as always!

Yeah they are definitely the old-school way of doing things. When I was a kid they were on every job site. Nowadays it’s pretty much just a offset steak. I agree with you they are very handy for being able to find a wall line while digging. Appreciate you watching Joe 👍🏻

The newer generation is using GPS coordinates. I still use a flip phone, so yes I still like setting the batter boards. 😁

GPS is great if you get a signal or remember batteries for it. Knowing how to do it old school can come in handy.

Nice looking holes. I bet that job was a nice change of pace having good dirt and not having to worry about swinging into something. On the hydraulic lines have you tried using crows feet with an extension? A stubby wrench may also help a tiny bit.

It was a fun job. I was pretty happy with how it turned out. The problem with those hydraulic lines is there is no room side to side. If you can get a wrench on it you can’t move it either way because the wrench takes up all the room. I think the crows feet would be the same size as the wrench. I’m sure there is something made to fit it I just don’t have it yet 🤔

Great video, love the commentary on tips for doing it right! I have my first job digging footings for a house addition in a few weeks and want to do the best possible job. I was wondering if you're responsible for typically determining the precise depth or is this provided to you by the architect or someone else? The "blueprints" have the min depth below grade but obviously with an addition we want the top row of block to be level with the existing house. It seems like somewhat straight forward math but just not something the excavator would be responsible for.

Every job is a little different but yes, I always figure the math so that my top course of block or concrete is even with the existing foundation. If the grade slopes away, sometimes you have to step the footing so that you can stay below frost. How is remember when digging footings to dig in nice even long strokes from the top down. Try not to curl your bucket through the top of the ditch or you will blow out the top. Be extra careful connecting the corners or you will have a mess. Just take your time. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

The TL10 is running great. I don’t have a constant need for a skid loader so that is why I buy used ones rather than new ones. We use it around the shop but the next time we get it on a job I will make sure to film it. Thanks for watching buddy👍🏻

What no cell towers ??? 🤣🤣🤣 Batter boards, some call them height boards on this side of the pond Ed ! Forms, we call them shutters over here, same language different words !!! Crawl space is the same !! 308 made short work of the muck shifting, how many loads did you move? Like how you said you were dipping the middle out, we all know what was in there 🤢😂 Good to save the stone (sub base) and the top soil, will pay dividends in the end Full Tilt!!

Oh we have plenty of tower work. Just had to sneak this one in. 😂 Interesting to hear the different names you have for things on that side of the pond 🤔 We took 4 loads of fill out and brought 1 load of stone in. My dad thought me well with taking care of your site. Hauling is expensive so make sure you save materials that you will need later rather than mix it together and make waste. i’m the jersey guy with the same year 304 as you, i’m liking that 308, i started working for a pool guy over here this summer backfilling, did a dozen so far and just dug one a couple weeks ago, took two days with the mini, guy is wanting me to dig some more, but i’m thinking about biting the bullet on a 308 in the spring, watcha think about that machine, can it handle a bigger bucket and what size clean up bucket could it handle? any intel would be appreciated.

A friend of mine has a pool business and just bought a 308 this summer. He loves it for digging pools. I think they are awesome machines and would buy one if I did more foundation work. That was a standard 36” bucket and it handled it with no problem. I have rented them with a 48” clean up bucket and it worked great. If you have the work for it you can’t go wrong with the 308. You have to try one! 👍🏻
