This engine is just about ready to be flipped the correct way up and then we can start the top end work! Loved the solution you devised for the uneven surface for the front suction bell hold down bolts; most other people would have ground those surfaces smooth, but that uneven surface is what that part left the factory with and kudos for retaining that rough patina!
@jenniferwhitewolf37845 жыл бұрын
digitalrailroader Factory yes, but the residue of a short-cut. Reminds me of Ford engines with all the sharp edges, ... to de-burr, or leave them sharp. My feeling, fix it! Why preserve a budget driven short cut that forces a work-around with added non factory parts?
@digitalrailroader5 жыл бұрын
Jennifer WhiteWolf you also have to remember when this machine was manufactured: the 1930s and right smack in the middle of the Great Depression. Any extra manufacturing steps would have added to the final cost of the machine and money and work back then was much harder to come by than during the Great Recession just a few years ago. So caterpillar cut as much unnecessary manufacturing costs they possibly could out so the machine could be affordable.

My guess is that front seal was added after people running the prototype units said the engines weeped oil out the front. No one could see the back so the minor amount of swetting oil was never an eyesore issue. :-) I always take a torch and anneal those copper sealing washers before re-using them. Also I think based on engine rotation that idler gear only pushes against the front cover on deceleration the rest of the time the angle of the gear cut keeps it pulled back.

Nice explanation of why the locks on the front pickup tube had to be installed 180 out from the way they normally would be. Great detail on this ☝️
@lukestrasser5 жыл бұрын
Squatch, thanks for addressing why the fold over lock was positioned the way that it was on the suction bell, saves me asking the question. As for the front seal, I would speculate that given the two unique environments that the crankshaft sees as it interfaces with the cold and cruel outside world might explain the suffering sealing techniques. The rear of the crankshaft lives a posh and pampered life in comparison to the front, it enjoys the shelter and safe harbor of an essentially sealed compartment with little in the way of water and dirt intrusion, sure there's some clutch dust, but nothing like what the front seal area sees. The front end of the crankshaft isn't so lucky, it's under constant assault from the elements, most of which are being accelerated at it by way of the fan. With the inherent dusty nature of dirt work, all being accelerated by the fan, my guess is the engineers decided an extra layer of protection was in order, thus limiting dirt ingestion into the lube oil and crankcase. I'm pleased to see 5J2115SP parts going into 5J1113 to live on, the clean sweep on fold over locks was equally cool, small victories ya know? Finally, (I know, this is already a novel in the comments) the quality in all parts of these machines is really evident when you look at the small details. Take for example the governor linkage assembly, the fact that Cat took the time and expense of adding a bushing to the end of the governor arm for a clevis pin bore is frankly staggering. It just shows their desire to have a life long serviceable component, that can e renewed with simple replacement parts over and over if needed. That's the kind of no corners cut mentality I miss in today's manufacturing and products. Merry Christmas to you and the family as we close out 2019. Sorry for the longest comment ever, I think I spent longer typing than I did watching the video today.

Beautifully clean looking lower end. Love it. I almost always use one size smaller washers when I can get by with it. Way back when, I had a Ford E-150 that needed a new rear main seal which required lifting the engine slightly to remove the oil pan. To my mechanic's surprise, the oil pump retaining bolts had backed out and the pump was on its way to falling into the pan. Don't know if was OEM to have had retaining clips but seriously doubt it.

I did not see a comment about the washers filling the machined indentation for the front oil pickup. I feel the washers lifted the bolts enough to give you the vector to bend the clip perfectly. Good morning sir - just curious as to why you elected to use the washers under the bolts on the front oil suction bell? Rather than filing down the high spots to make it flat like you have demonstrated in other videos. I think the solution you used is just fine, but just seems off for the level of detail you have shown us in the past. I am really enjoying the build man, hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!

It makes no difference. Why mill or file a factory part? Would do the same thing.
@ralfie88015 жыл бұрын
TheAggromonster You’re right, it’s for him to answer. But this is probably why: the surface around the bolt holes has been spot faced so a bolt or washer can sit flat on the surface. The fold over locks are probably an update implemented after some of those bolts worked their way loose during testing or after the first year or two production runs were complete. So, if you have a perfectly fine machined surface for a washer and/or a bolt head to sit flat on, why mess with doing any more machine work on it?
@bills60935 жыл бұрын
It looked like the depth of the impression was slightly interfering with the foldover locks, so he wanted to create a bit more clearance for the locks to fold over properly.
@scotte28155 жыл бұрын
@@squatch253 makes you wonder why Cat just spot-faced that area rather than take the time to flat-mill the area. I suspect the answer is just that, time in machine setup and operation, and we all know that TIME=MONEY

Hey Squatch, On your oil pickup tube, using the flat washers against the round gaskets is fine, but have you considered using structural flat washers in place of just plain old thin washers? The structural washers are about twice as thick as regular washers and would be less susceptible to collapsing in the center from vibration or over tightening like the original washers appeared to have done. It’s just a thought, and something I tend to do with critical parts like that pickup tube. Keep the great videos coming, I’m really enjoying them.

I was surprised for about 5 seconds. Then it occured to me that Cat made it this way 50 or 80 or whatever years ago, and it has been working that way ever since, just fine. Are you restoring something like it was when new or building a new machine from old parts? If you are restoring it, you probably want to leave it the way it was, unless you KNOW there is some really good reason the old way should be changed.

From experience with mechanical locks (keys, tabs, the whole lot) regardless of where you place the fold, it won't twist. It can't. Unless it's a bolt/screw that's going into a rotational type part, the forces involved in overcoming that much material are astronomical at that scale. Static and non-axial rotational motions, just can't do it, if the fold is done right.

Question re the two oil pickups. If one pickup drew all the oil out if its respective sump and the other was still submerged in oil, wouldn't the dry one start sucking air since there's a common pump? All the best for you and yours over Christmas..........Mike
@lukestrasser5 жыл бұрын
Mike, recommend watching the previous oil pump video. Short answer, the front suction bell has a separate oil pump section and only moves oil from the front of the pan to the rear sump to be picked up and pumped under pressure by the main pressure oil pump. So it's ok if it sucks air since it's just essentially a transfer pump.
