When I saw those two other motors being crated up, I couldn't help but think of the last scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now I know where the ark wound up...in Squatch's storage shed, along with lots of other priceless mechanical artifacts.

One comment I wanted to share from my experience. What ever I work on I clean all the parts and hardware until it is clean, clean, clean. I polish the bolts and washers and nuts on a bench grinder with a wire wheel. I used to reassemble with very little lube and then down the road, years later if I took it apart all my polished threads and bolt shanks were rusty again. I started applying grease, anti-seeze, oil or maybe some spray lube. Then when I pulled the alternator off 5-6 years down the road...I had a greasy, dirty gooey messy bolt that could be wiped clean with a shop rag. No sign of rust or corrosion. You went to a lot of work polishing the bolts and studs on the starter engines. A little grease will keep them nice forever. I am 61 and have been wrenching on stuff since I was about 12 or13. Keep up the good work!!

With this series one should see every old Cat restored to right, correct and proper. If I come across even a rather poorly preserved one I now have too much confidence that the badly worn and damaged starting engine can be resurrected! Great as usual, can't wait until the next video.

I don't have any old dozers or heavy equipment, but I am very mechanical. I work on cars, mowers, trucks, motorcycles, electric things...you name it. Mostly items that normal people use in everyday life. I really enjoy watching you work on these old Caterpillar products. You make it very educational with the manuals explaining how the factory released updates to the equipment and why the changes were made. My favorite part is seeing how trick you have your shop set up!! Everything clean and organized. Great Show!!

When you explained the part of the oil drain tube being broken off it brought back memories of my dad. He would remove access panels and never reinstall. And guess what, it caused problems. My first restoration tractor (M) that I did had every part, bolt, screen, or screw was factory or it did not see the paint booth. So many times I have seen things missing on tractors. It makes me want to grind my teeth when I see it. I do appreciate seeing that kind of care taken and the explanation for consequences of not reinstalling. Keep up the good and safe work.

I expected you to slather the rods and cams with oil before putting that top manifold on. Ever consider putting those other two engines in plastic "space bag" with the desiccant? Thus you can suck all the air out with a vacuum and less likely to have trapped moisture. Can't wait to hear that staring engine, keep up the great work!

It is truly amazing how Cat supports your rebuild of older equipment with correct parts, sometimes NOS stuff, going so far back! Try and do this with a late-model vehicle older than about ten or fifteen years. I believe Mercedes is the exception, according to Jay Leno, they can supply anything for all models, with a hefty price tag, of course..

Word of caution: that "none hardening" permatex bite me in the ass the other week. It had a bugger of solid dried up bit in a brand new bottle. I treated the gasket on a pinion drive gear housing in a large vertical lathe with it. The lowest, heaviest part to move and install inside the frame casting. Only after putting most of the drive train together and testing I found out it was still pouring oil like a sieve. The hard blob jacked the gasket up and stretched it enough for oil to seep under it. I got it all apart and fixed two days later. Be aware of the possibility of such a contamination. Use your fingers to run over the sealant and check for hard bits.

The pony motor is going to look really nice bolted to the diesel engine. Was there a 32 volt electric start option back in the day that would be a good members only video to fill us in that system

I noticed that all of the heads for the pony motors are the older style. Do you have any of the "high performance" heads with the straight plugs? do you have any information on them other than they were supposed to give about 10% more power? Really enjoyed the video on making a new bearing, wish someone would start making those in the aftermarket world with the undersize bores, and maybe an oversize on the outside. would probably save a number of those engines that are now boat anchors.

None of these ventures seem to give me parts as clean as yours. You parts seem much more "dry" than mine where I have grease and oil on everything, do you use a burn-off oven to bake those off before cleaning?
