Caterpillar Fuel Transfer Pump Removal

Orwell's 3406B Caterpillar started loosing prime in the fuel system. I remove the transfer (lift) pump to replace it.

Just remember to bump the motor to get it in flush it’s not take off and put back on type deal. I had a helluva time trying to get new pump to sit flush had to keep spinning flywheel till it seated flush

I used to drive a 359 with a B model cat and in the mornings, especially cold ones, during cranking if hold the pedal to the floor until I hear that first cyl pick up then get off the fuel so it doesn’t rev up. Just to help with cold starts.

Steve I've got the Cat # for those O rings if you need it, I buy them 50x at a time because it's the same O ring on EVERY fuel fitting on that motor and they're like .15 cents each. Just keep them in a Zip Top bag in my toolbox cuz you just never know when you'll need one. Of course I realize you've already changed the pump, but the Part Number might come in handy in the future for ya!

If your looking for a pin hole in your suction side, you most likely will not see a leak. You can plug the line at the FTP remove line from the tank. Get a psi regulator and put around fifteen psi on the system and you will find the leak. Also you can put one way flow check valves in your fuel system, to prevent any drain back. I only do this if problem can not be located.

They had several different check valves over the years which they changed the material the diaphragms were made of.. I worked at a caterpillar dealer for 42 years..

If you don't have a diff lock on the drives, a little light braking will force power through the diffs and get power to the wheels with traction.

yep a can see a video heading our way about changing a power divider. or spider gears. ok 3 of the 4 wheel set lifted he has a divider locked but he does not have the pos lock Orwell just does not have it.

@@hartsfire5706 The one I drove was a 1967 Kaiser Industries, per the dash board placard. The lever was under the dash and some marking like "Air Lock." Certain it was NOT door locks, ha, ha.

@@donalddodson7365 67 not sure about that year i drove one that was a 69 and it had the full pos lock for all 6. it was a beast in the mud and snow. i ran it at a Christmas tree farm near me.. i was the only person there that knew how to drive it as the trans had gone out years earlier and some one put a twin stick in it, so with the transfer case and twin stick trans it had 5 shifters. i should have bought it when the farm sold out as i think it sat till it was crushed.

Steve , I left a comment six or eight months ago after seeing a video of you starting Orwell after setting overnight , I said then I thought Orwell had a cracked fuel filter housing , I've had two of'em crack after filter being put on to tight , it puts the housing in a bind trying to losen the filter and cracks it , but I've not watched all your videos , you may have already changed it .

That pump is actually very simple inside, it’s just three check valves. I take mine apart and clean it every once and a while as my truck sat for a few years and got algae in the tanks. Also what rpm does your truck idle at? Mine was low and it made for a hard start.

I'm not saying any thing bad about Orwell. But I'd stretch it out at least a couple of feet. Then you'll have a nicer cab over, but it is cool!

The power divider seems to act like a 4X4 Jeep with open differentials. If one of the four wheels on each axle has no traction, the 4X4 wont go anywhere.

That's why it's still only a 4X2 no matter what, unless you spring for diff lockers also.

@@ralfie8801 Some, if not all, Canadian class 8 trucks have inter-axle locks, that lock the two axles together on each differential, as well as the common power divider. Because of the bad Winter weather in some areas up there.

George Travers You said it yourself, "some, if not all". Differential locks are extra cost items when you order just about any vehicle. Even if it is part of a cold climate package with battery blankets and fuel heaters, it's still an extra cost item. If it doesn't have it, it's because somebody didn't check the appropriate box when they ordered the vehicle.

It has been 52 years since I drove an Army Deuce-&-a-Half, but I kind of recall a differential lock on the two rear axles. I thought it prevented slipping & spinning like Orwell had. Am I wrong? Nothing quite as unpleasant as liquids dropping while working from the floor!

All he needs to do is plan his first turn better so when he backs up the truck is facing straight in the door, then both ends of both axles will go through that low spot at the same time preventing loss of traction.

Does the fuel system pull fuel from the bottom of the tank or is it connected to the top of the tank? If it's connected to the top of the tank there's a dip tube inside the tank going to the bottom of the tank. Those dip tubes can crack and suck air. Your fuel pressure gauge problem might be an over pressure problem. I can't find a good diagram of the fuel system online but your manual should have one. There is some type of pressure regulator in the system to return fuel to the tank when the pressure reaches a certain point. It might be on the injector pump. If that doesn't work, the pressure will go too high which could damage the gauge, the lift pump and the injector pump. I have heard of people blocking fuel return lines on diesel systems to try to get more power and the black smoke. There should be a diesel injection shop in your area that would have someone who is familiar with the system.

Draws from the bottom, returns to the top. It's the most basic inside the tank, it's just a welded fitting, no line or anything. The newer trucks yeah, but the antiques like Steve has, and my '84 359 are pretty plain and simple.

@@familytraditiontransportat7951 1984 is a newer truck to me. Fuel tanks have had top draws since at least the 1950s. We had a 1950s vintage cab over International tractor that had top draw fuel tanks, aluminum frame and air suspension. All of the 1970s Ford Louisville models we had drew fuel from the top fittings as did the 1970s model Macks. Most tanks have a lower well in the bottom of the tank that the dip tube sits into. They can be plumbed either way which is why I asked the question.

What's interesting about that idea is that many fleet operators are finding just the opposite. All the pollution control stuff fails or causes other issues. E.g. EGR, DPT, SCR, etc.. You can buy an old truck for pretty short money and if you can maintain it yourself save a lot of money over having to deal with all the modern electronics which require computers and software to triage. There are some here on YT that talk about the greater downtime of their modern electronic trucks vs. their older more mechanical ones. Regards

@@donaldwilliams6821 Cars and trucks are a whole lot alike. I could work on a pre-computerized, pre-fuel injected, pre-smog reduction era car. Try working on a new car... no thanks. Diesel trucks are no different with a computer controlling everything and a bunch of extra things designed to reduce emissions. Yeah, new cars and trucks get better fuel economy and produce less emissions, but they are a pain to repair and repairs are more a thing of the computer telling you which expensive component needs to be replaced.

@@michaelstansfield319 I agree. In the Army I could fix or troubleshoot my Jeep or deuce pretty quickly. My 2014 eco diesel JGC is a whole different animal. Also computers suffer can lead you astray too. I had a Trans Am years ago. Kept throwing codes. The tech kept replacing parts. The shop owner, came over, he knew nothing about computers, but valvie covers were off and he took a look while it was running and said "worn cam" and walked away. haha turns out GM has some soft camshafts. Replaced it, problem solved.
