Hi Josh. I am 56 and just picked up a 1957 Hurcus lathe. I put a call out here on facebook in Perth AUSTRALIA asking if anyone had any hss bar/bits they no longer use and would like to sell me. As i am on a Disability pension i cannot afford carbide especially as i have never used a metal lathe before. Had a few people say don't waste your time. Carbide are you so much better. My attitude is alot of thing got made real well with the hss bits back in the day. so since i am learning and its on a old machine i want to learn with hss and learn how to sharpen. Just watching you i think proves my point. The latest technology isnt always the best. Thankyou for sharing your experience. Its the only way people like myself can learn. Thanks again regards Andy Australia

There's a lot to be said for using HSS if time is of lesser importance. Carbide has a place in the home shop but is nowhere near as important as in industry.

I use DeVlieg micro bore tooling for similar repair work on my boring mill. On my last repair I cut about .800 on the welded ID in one pass running 90rpm and .002 per rev. The tool held up good and there was little to no chatter.

I seem to make my way around the woodshop ok but I can just barely run a decent bead of weld. That said, I truly enjoy watching the experts in their field fix all manner of damaged machinery/equipment. I've added you to my "welder/machinists favorites along with Abom, Keith Rucker, Curtis at Cutting Edge Engineering, IC Weld and a recent add with Quinn over at Blondihacks. Perhaps someday I will take the leap and get a lathe or mill and start breaking HSS steel and carbide cutters;-) Until then, I will live vicariously through folks like you. Thank you for the great content!

I've not seen a Morse taper held in like that before - perhaps you can include in a video about the HBM just how that MT clamp actually works. Yes, a 'tour' video round the HBM demonstrating its features and functions would be much appreciated. I'm interested in how machines do things - while basically all mills do the same thing, different models by different manufacturers offer small but sometimes very effective other ways to do things - and that makes such features quite interesting. For instance, the carriage stop on my lathe is probably more precise than most. Usually there's a mechanism for disconnecting the feed drive that relies on linkages - as those linkages wear, the actual point the carriage stops changes slightly. On my lathe, (Colchester Student 'round head', 1964), the stop simply stops the carriage moving - so is always at the same point. Having done that, the feed drive continues to try to move the carriage but in fact all it does is trip a mechanical overload in the feed drive.

I have a Caterpillar that is probably about the same size as yours. 3,000 pound lift I believe it is, Perfect for small area, and YES, it does run short sometimes. I had a (literal) 400 lb friend who has since passed away (as you probably could imagine from weight issues) that I have a photo of him sitting on the rear of the tow motor, and we threw a binding strap around him to hold him on. (So we could move a very heavy item.) Sounds unsafe, but it was safe enough. My OTHER more safe trick, so to make you a bracket, that fits on the rear of the machine. If you have a tow pin, down there, that is where you would mount it, and it catches the lip of a 55 steel drum / barrel. Throw a strap around the top to hold it, and fill it with water. I've moved a LOT more than 3,000 lbs with mine without issue safely. @@TopperMachineLLC

I find with the braised cutters when doing the first couple of cuts if you put a big radius on the cutter like 3 - 4 mm (1/8”) the tool does not tend to shatter so much

I guess breaking the harder carbide on an interrupted cut is a combination of losing and unloading stresses on the carbide and possibly an influence of cutting depth and tool speed creating vibration frequencies that are just difficult for carbide and perhaps more so when the thin carbide is brazed to a different material with somewhat different properties.

All I can say is I bet the folks in your area are glad to have a good machines in their area. Especially after hearing that you live in the middle of nowhere. Not as thick as I want, it's 6". But I have a good sand base. I was concerned in the beginning and checked it every week for the first year I had it. Never moved. What video resolution is your camera ? I'm looking at 0:10 KZbin is reporting 1080 pixels but the image I'm looking at is certainly not that good. I suspect your camera resolution is low and that somewhere along the processing getting it boosted to 1080 but that's a total waste of time as it doesn't improve the image quality !
