To address a lil confusion...the best way you can make a cheese bait for this is go get a few blocks of cheddar and swiss pick up a can of condensed milk unsweetened ...heat the blocks slowly on stove till melted then add a small amount of the milk let this mix spoil outside in sun till it gets the smell of dirty gym bag ...take an old tube sock and pack the stink cheese in it ..tie a knot then toss it in back of trap then sink it this is the best alt to buying rotten cheese by the 300 lb drum like we do .

That's a great question. So far I haven't lost fish by them coming back through the throat. I think the reason is that since my pipe is so small, only 8", I'm only catching a small fish in it. I'll do a vid on the throats themselves tonight. They come to a very narrow opening, about an inch. It'll be a week before I do another check. I'll be sure to film it and post it. Thanks for a great observation. Going jug fishing tomorrow night after work. Going after gar, grennel and cats.

No problem - the pipe can be heavy so just make sure you keep it out of the mud. I have had one get buried in the mud and it was a beast to pull out. Another reason to use a stout line. Thanks for watching!

Instead of zip ties. Use 2 aluminum carabiners there reusable & can use to tie rope for retrieval

Just a thought to help out, you can make any size trap you wish with chicken wire, etc and install the throats as your entrance on them as well. It will have better results than the pipe(similar to the hoop), less expensive, light weight, and a lot of fun. You are all welcome for the tip and keep catching them up. Also, you can flex the opening of the throat(even place an object there) to assist in developing a little memory in order to enlarge the opening making larger fish an easier target.

Wire mesh traps are good for scale fish. Dark traps are probably better for cats. I catch some Bullheads in my Bluegill wire trap, but I'm going to build a tube trap in an attempt to catch more Bullheads as I need them for Flathead bait. If I put my mesh trap out at night w/ dog food I can catch some Bullheads, but generally it's 10% Bulls to 90% Gills.

I'll bet that a small/medium size traffic cone would be a good starting place for a fish trap throat....and you would not have to cut out those triangles.

Amazon has all sizes...12 cones for $11.00. these small cones are 6" high and have a square base of 5.5". U-Line has a selection also, but the dimensions are a guess work.

hi mr trapper , new to your channel, i am here for your catfish stuff and i think i found a solution for people with limited space and also a possibly cheaper way to get it done and the pvc is what inspired me, take 2 of same plastic garbage cans and put them together as best you can , as for the catfish throat part i am recycling my poor dogs satellite dish that she no longer needs, if you don't mind i will share my project when i get it done

could you show us the act of you checking it with fish inside? I am not convinced that fish would be "poured out" when checking it. Is the plastic throats stiff enough to stop a catfish from being backed out while retrieving trap? Don't dought you, just I think I like this trap better than others stealing my bottle lines. I having a problem in my mind in regards to placing a block of Cheese bait inside the scrap Black plastic pipe I have? just how did you set you're catfish trap? thanks no video showing that done I can find? did you just throw a peace inside and then put the throats in place? because then the bait is free to move around and a Catfish can eat it all up? it needs to be in a bag or something? please help me out with this situation?, thanks

Shane Dahlke Hi Shane, I haven't used the compressed cheese blocks - but I have been wanting to try them out. I use soft cheese or sour corn placed in a piece of old panty hose material or old sock. This keeps the bait from dissolving so quickly. I just shove the sock through the plastic throat and let it sit inside the pipe. On my pipe traps I like to have the throats permanently attached and prefer to have the far end of the pipe wired shut and I empty the fish from the far end of the pipe - if that makes sense. To set the pipe trap I attach a line to the front (throat end) of the pipe and toss it in the water. That way when I pull it up, the fish push against the back of the trap - not the throats. If you are using PVC pipe the trap will sink by itself. With black plastic, you may have to add a rock or piece of metal weight to get it to sink fast. Hope this helps!

yes it helps thanks a lot!!! and I thought I may need some weight to help it sick even tho the Black Plastic pipe doesn't float I tested a small peace before I was going to use it! but with the panty hose don't you have to replace it?

Shane Dahlke Yes, you do have to replace the panty hose - but they are real cheap at Walmart so I don't mind. You can also buy mesh bait bags from catfish supply houses that are reusable, but they cost about $10 - so it's up to you which you prefer. Take care buddy.

Good question. The throat is attached with zip ties so you can remove it to get the fish out. The cheese bait is put into a mesh bag or panty hose and pushed through the throat. The catfish cannot eat it up through the bag. it is OK to let the bag sit inside next to the throat. I just tie the pipe off to the bank. Hope this helps.

The Meat Trapper So about how big of a chunk of cheese would you use to put inside the panty hose? and where do you get the cheese?, about baseball size?, or smaller?, or larger?, I ordered a big chunk but it came packaged with mold on it, had it sitting in my house and it got more moldy and became a mess so I threw it away, but do you think that catfish would not care if it where moldy? or would they not like the taste or smell of mold? or would that matter at all? I think it would due to there extreme smell and taste!!! what are you're thoughts? and thanks so much for you're reply!!!

Not really. I catch a lot more fish with my hoop net trap than I have with the pipe trap. I believe this trap needs to be left in place in a semi permanent basis so they can get used to nesting in it. I can put my net trap out and check it the next day and have fish. Not so with this type of trap. Also I seem to catch smaller fish in the pipe than I do in a net trap. I look at this trap as something to "install" at a permanent camp. It will last forever compared to a net trap. Thanks for commenting. Hope this helps others out.

Is it possible to catch catfish using catfish as cut bait?

Sure - most catfish are indiscriminate feeders. But I have never used catfish to catch catfish because the whole point of catching catfish to me is to eat them. I usually use other less desirable fish for cutbait. When it comes to catching large flatheads - they prefer live bait rather than cut bait, so the bottom line for me is that I don't see the advantage of using catfish to catch catfish. If you are fishing public waters, most likely illegal. Ck your laws. Where I'm at you can trap bait fish only/ small fish traps. If you own on own private pond or lake you can do as you please.
